The Space and Astronomy Thread

Lolz ^ :D

So long and thanks for all the fish...

This advert at the Photography Show. Printed about 3m wide x 2m high. Wow.

Hype is building up for next Wednesday when the alleged first photo of the region of a black hole is to be released.

Probably doesn't exist by now!

Good question, do black holes die? eat themselves? or just get bigger?

Without checking, didn’t Stephen Hawking propose that they evaporate? That “Hawking Radiation” somehow escaped from them, ultimately diminishing their mass.

By the numbers:

M87 is located about 55 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.
The black hole in the center of the galaxy is about 6.5 billion times the mass of the sun and is about the size of our solar system at 62 billion miles across.
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is actually a group of eight radio telescopes that worked in tandem using precise atomic clocks to sync up observations and photograph the black hole.
More than 200 researchers were part of the EHT collaboration, and they released six scientific papers Wednesday detailing their observations.

From t'web :- black holes evaporate but, a black hole of the mass of the Sun will take more than a billion times a billion times a billion times a billion times a billion times a billion times the age of the universe to evaporate completely..

Yes, exactly that. It seems counter-intuitive, because by definition nothing can escape from a black hole. However the paradox arises because of quantum fluctuations. Space is absolutely full of pairs of virtual subatomic particles and their corresponding antiparticles spontaneously coming into existence and then annihilating one another. When this happens right on the event horizon, it's possible for one of the pair to escape the black hole and one to fall into it. As the particle–antiparticle pair was produced by the black hole's gravitational energy, the escape of one of the particles lowers the mass of the black hole. Hence the black hole evaporates.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, Brian Eno is going to release an expanded version of Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks.
For those that don’t know, the album was originally the soundtrack to the brilliant Al Reinert film For All Mankind.
Even if you haven’t heard the album, you would have heard some of the tracks as they have featured in many films, tv shows and adverts.

See you there... ;)

Yes it does ^

This is interesting, The heart rates of the crew of Apollo 11 during the moon landing. Armstrong very settled except in the actual landing phase, much more so than I'd have been.

Nope. not heard it.
