In the BBC account of the Durdle Door incident they interviewed someone on a trip from London! Is there no where closer to London to get some fresh air than Dorset?
I saw that comment from a London day tripper, must be about a 250 mile round trip.
Hope she had a strong bladder, don't suppose many facilities were open enroute

I'm afraid Boris opened the door on this one when the government allowed unlimited (by distance) travel when he loosened the lockdown restrictions. I know that they live in a little bubble and have little or no realisation about how the public live their life's but really what did he think would happen when he allowed this.

Agree. If they had said you can travel up to X miles(I think around 15 -20 would have been reasonable) backed up by a tough fine then policing it would have been simpler.
Some people would claim they were more than the allowed miles from home because they were helping a house bound relative etc, but that would be a difficult one to claim if you parked in a beauty spot.

It's sad but true that the government has failed to perform their job with any level of competence since this began.

If they had acted at the first warning to isolate potential carriers (people arriving in Britain from the infection centre) and followed that up with a rolling shut down of ports as further foreign areas of infection occurred, then much of what followed could probably have been alleviated. Instead, the failure of leadership overloaded the NHS contact tracing service, which in turn drove up the infection rate as more carriers passed on the infection.

At each step, it seems that the government has missed no opportunity to miss the opportunities to control the infection. They have instead procrastinated and behaved with a shocking lack of personal integrity throughout. They have, in fact, behaved as anyone aware of their personal histories might well have predicted.

I am sad to say that I think it is completely wrong for the current government to remain in office, based on their behaviour over the last three months.

I said from day one they should of shut our country down, know one comes in or out.

I don’t think that would have been possible. What about retiring residents? Trump probably made it worse by banning travel and giving residents a small window for return — do you remember the pictures of huge close-packed queues of travellers at airports waiting to be cleared to enter?

Or maybe gone to lockdown a lot quicker might of saved 1,000s of lives

Don't see how stopping people leaving the country would save lives???

Ummm stopping the potential spread globally? ie returning residents being able to spread the virus to their home countries increasing the virus spread.

If it meant saving 1,000s of lives, then tough.
How would preventing them leaving save lifes? For that matter I’m not sure if you’d be able to stop citizens returning. Of course that doesn’t stop you taking them straight to enforced quaratine

This virus has certainly brought out the hypochondriacs, Dr Google must be doing a roaring trade.
Never known so many people discuss health, its taken over from the weather as the conversation starter of choice.

On that note I can't recall a worse spring than this for Hay Fever, bloody awful this year.
Need some rain for all sorts of reasons, might damp the pollen down a bit too.

Pollen count is "very high" again today, that vile Rapeseed stuff doesn't help, air is thick with it here

My stepdaughter lives at Cleethorpes and she took a drive down the seafront yesterday, she said no or very little sign of social distancing and thousands of people running the risk of bringing the virus into this area.

Our infection rate had been very low, at the lockdown lifting start we could see new cases going down and had reached 148, yesterday 155, only small numbers but still in the wrong direction.

Hay fever !!!!!!!!!!!!!! nose has been blocked for weeks with just a few rainy days respite

Sadly we can't keep the lockdown going until the deaths reach zero, life has to start and hopefully
it won't go up too much

Dont think we needed to keep it until deaths reached 0 we just didn't need region to region travel just yet

I live in the East Riding of Yorkshire, in a smallish town. At the start of this pandemic I felt fortunate to live in an area with an overall population for East Yorks of around 350,000 across a wide geographical spread. My son lives in Hillingdon London of about the same population levels but in a much smaller geographical area. I used to watch the figures for Hillingdon rise with some anxiety for my son and his family, and can recall his area reaching around 300 cases, while in East Yorks we had about 20. Now we have greater numbers of cases in East Yorks we've overtaken Hillingdon and have almost a 1000 cases.

That assumes co-operation, or the resources to enforce if not.

It does, but I'm unsure why the UK doesn't do so. Here, your escorted from the airport to a hotel for your 14 dats quarantine. Depending on where you enter Australia you may also be charged for the pleasure

If Boris & Co. thought they'd put a lid on the Dom Cummings fiasco by introducing a degree of relaxation re lockdown...well...maybe not. The comments section is an interesting read.
It's interesting that the national media seem not to have picked up on this yet. One might almost think they're "keeping their powder dry". :naughty:

That’s a nice piece of research! Not too surprising, if true, people who have contempt for the law tend to scoff at more than one — an example of this is one Alexander Piffle Johnson :).

Piffel (de Pfeffel.)Very good....very witty..

I listen to the Stephen Nolan phone-in each weekend and since the start of COVID-19 a consultant in a Manchester hospital..Dr Al..(Nolan calls him that) has been giving accounts of his front-line work. One journalist who listens to him said he was his barometer of what's going on. last night Dr Al, who has a strong South Wales accent, spoke again to Stephen Nolan and what he had to say was disturbing.

Here's the start of it. Pretty well word for word..It's amazing how difficult it is to transcribe but I've done it to give a flavour and by doing so hopefully entice members to click on the link at the bottom and hear it in full.

"The language of the daily briefings has changed significantly. Up to last week it was 'We're following scientific advice..now it's we're listening to scientific advice and there's a huge difference between the two. Here's an example. The Health Sec announced that the people who are shielding, they've been sent a text telling them that they no longer need to shield. 2.2 million in England. For us it's ok but for them they're petrified because if they get the virus it can be the death sentence for them and I was practically horrified looking at some messages that had been put on ...by Dr Nikita Kanani (who is the NHS England the Primary Medical Director) stating that "I'm unsure about the information..please look at government website and as soon as I get more information on Monday I will update you"
She is Chair of all Primary Care Trusts in England...so the Primary Care Health (NHS England) has been completely by-passed in this decision. So, if you're someone shielding and you're concerned and ask your doctor about this he/she won't have any information.

He went on to say that previously on Five Live he has declined to answer any political question.

"As a British citizen I am now saying that the whole focus on this pandemic, which was a health care problem, lead by scientists and tackled by the NHS, has all shifted when the story last week went into the political arena when there was a some incident with the prime minister's advisor and the public and media totally focused on that..I think our political elite are now dealing with it as a political problem not a health care problem"

A day or so ago I posted about the newly appointed Baroness Dido Harding as Director of the Track & Trace system. He mentioned her, (saying that he was sure she is an honourable lady) in the context of having no medical experience and her role as head of the race Courses Jockey Club who own the Cheltenham race course and that she's married to an MP, one of Boris's ministers and suggested she withdraw from her Track & Trace position.

It really is worth listening to in full. Having heard it (and other medical and science people criticising the way it's all being dealt with) my wife and I are to continue our lockdown with our Sainsbury's click & collect and the odd visit to Morrisons. We have been to Homebase to get plants/compost and good distancing measures are in place there and that's it. I did hear ,on the radio this morning another consultant or scientist say, when pushed for an answer, that she thinks we will have a second wave after seeing the hoards of people out and about at the weekend. Infact Dr AL said the date we'll know will be June 17th. He's not optimistic.

It starts at 2.04. That's 2 hours 4 minutes into the programme(show) and is about 2/3 the way along the time curser.

Yes, but unfortunately Boris and friends in their infinite wisdom went from Stay at Home, exercise locally to, in England, 'you can drive anywhere you want'.

Now I dont get this, yes I would love a day at the beach (over an hour and a half away) but with no shops open and virtually no leisure/food/drink places open, I cant see the point in going all that way?

I heard rumour of this a few days ago but couldn't see it reported anywhere, similarly I have not seen it mentioned here either. But I found this article today.

Full list of MPs who voted to lower our food standards during the Covid pandemic

Fears as Government promises for post-Brexit food and environmental standards removed from Agriculture Bill.

Under cover of the Coronavirus pandemic and headlines over the Government’s handling of the crisis which has seen Britain suffer more deaths than any other European country, another major public health story has slipped through barely noticed, and has rarely been mentioned in the weekly PMQs.

The most important farming legislation in generations passed its third reading in parliament despite warnings that in a bid to make the UK market pliable for a post-Brexit US trade deal, protections of minimum food safety standards have evaporated, as have safeguards for Britain’s farmers.

Interesting. The phrase 'a good day to bury bad news' springs to mind.

Dave
Funny enough, I was thinking exactly the same thing ;)

A large percentage of farmers and fishermen voted Tory at the last election believing their lies, I hope they are sitting comfortably it's going to be a fun next four and a half years.

We're 10 miles (as the straight line goes!) from the beach but haven't visited since lockdown started. I think we'll wait for a very high tide to wash all the crap off the sea wall before we head down.
