Yes
On a nikon crop camera, would you rather lose the focal range 16mm-24mm or the focal range of 55mm-70mm ?

I have bought a new camera as an upgrade and so now its new glass time. Will be buying glass secondhand, and partnering it with a tokina 11-16mm, a cheapo 50mm 1.8 prime, and a 70-200VR1.

So its either 17-55 or the 24-70.

Some people say they dont like their experience with the 17-55 however everyone i know loves the 24-70...

My favourite lens on my D700 is teh 24-70 which I tend to use nearer the 70 end so I would say the your question that I would rather miss the wider millimeters :)

I did have a 17-55 on my d300 but now use a tamron 28-75 (can't afford the nikon yet). Much prefer the tamron and rarely miss the wide end, whereas always needed more on the nikon.

I suppose it depends on what you shoot mainly. For me, I had the same dilema and went for the 17-55... no regrets at all, amazing lens.

so
the gap is 16-70..?

Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 DX HSM...........have one - excellent - - about £160 used

They are both amazing lenses so it probably depends what sort of photography you do mostly. If you think a FF body is in your future then the 24-70mm would be a wise purchase. If not, and if you do a good amount of wide as well as 'standard' lens work then the 17-55 may be a better buy. That or the 24-70mm plus a wide-angle lens to plug the gap. Really it depends on how you use your camera but they're both excellent lenses!

the 17-55 is more of a studio/portrait/landscape lens, the 24-70 has faster AF so is more use for shooting moving objects as well as the rest, depends what you shoot really, if it were me i'd go with the 24-70mm

I would rather have the gap at the longer end but I prefer not to have any gaps if possible.

I think i am pretty much decided that ill be buying the tokina 11-16 and a used nikon 24-70, although i could buy the nikon or tokina 12-24 and then i wouldnt miss out on any focal range, but they are both F4 and the 11-16 is f2.8 and i believe its sharper, but then i also believe the 11-16 will work on FX over 12mm so thats an arguement in itself. GRRR.
