Just to chip in my two penneth (and burst the psoting cherry) I've got a 28mm sigma 1.8 and I've found no real problems with it at all, I'm impressed with both build and picture quality even wide open. This is a 100% crop of a shot taken at f/1.8 and it seems acceptably sharp to me.
