    Football photography advice.

Looks like you've already had some sound advice on the crit forum, but to reiterate, backgrounds backgrounds backgrounds. To repeat what I tell my students, 'use it or lose it', in this case, lose it, wider aperature @ f/2.8 or f/4 would have killed the background and made the subjects stand...

Horse Racing - Camera under jumps settings

Why not just talk him through it on the forum? Isn't that the whole point of TP? 17mm on a DX sensor is going to shoot you in the foot, it'll get too tight. Hire a 12-24 or a 12mm fisheye if you can. Horses then to jump at Cheltenham on the near side (to the stands) over the hurdles and...

    Sigma 300mm 2.8 for sports

Seems pretty sensible, the 120-300 is as sharp as the 300 Siggy anyway. Buy new if you can though and take advantage of the 3 year guarantee that Sigma offer. Their poor QA means there are just as many bad ones out there as good ones.

    Shooting a football game today

Scott, I can see what you are getting at with more room to play with focus but unfortunatly it won't help the OP. The extra dof will bring the background through when in Sport we are trying to lose the background as much as possible. Unfortuntaly the only way realy for the OP is f2.8 or...

    A lesson learned

Quite. A trip back to the little book thing they send out with cameras required for me. I think they call it a manual?

    Sigma 120-300

Used it for football and it's tack sharp in good light. It suffers from dodgy AF come the winter months though.

    A lesson learned

Learnt a valuable lesson today. Once you have settings that work for you on your camera don't get flustered on a bad shoot and change the lot, you'll never get back to the original 'working' state. Spend 4 weeks wondering what was up with my images until I looked under the metadata on...

    Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF N IF ED

Make sure you get the Siggy from a reputable dealer who will allow you to exchange it if there should be any problems with the lens. If you get a good copy these are great lenses, but there are some bad ones about. In other words...avoid ebay.

Tech Debate II: Getting the Shot.

You're right there Tony and I've seen some great images with the goal framed previously, but oddly not so much this season or over the last 18 months, the nationals seem to be favouring goal shots at 'the right' end lately. Although I'm sure this weekend I'll be proved wrong and we'll see a...

    Walkstool

It probably is about that height, If I'm at a ground with raised advertising hordings I tend to sit on a 400mm lens case. I had to find one which would fit in my case as I was fed up with leaving the 3 legged one in the wrong car and ending up crouching for 2 hours, begging a stool off a ball...

Tech Debate II: Getting the Shot.

I think the main things I've always been taught about composing the image are, Don't crop too square, or too tight, STRAIGHT HORIZONS (that one has been shouted at me before) and look for the unusual (Using the eye mounted in the back of your head)
