If your PC monitor has built in speakers, HDMI will carry your video and audio at the same time if your video card has HDMI out. DVI only carries the video signals if you are using external speakers anyway.

Are they just plain USB extension cables you're trying? You might need to get USB Repeater Cables which can extend USB. I was looking to do something similar last year but kept getting conflicting information from different companies as to whether the repeater cables could maintain USB 2.0...

Have you tried looking at Advanced Settings under Power Options. You can customise your Power Plan so you can decide when Hard Disks turn off and when USB suspends?
