What sort of battery life are people getting from their watches? Took mine off charge at 8am and it's currently at 80%

Mine's usually down to around 60% by 10pm when I charge it back to 100% and then wear it all night. Then it's usually down to around 90% in the morning. It's a Watch 8, bought at the end of January.

I think the watch battery life has suffered with the latest system update.

However there is one factor I need to check out; whether having the watch more than bluetooth comms distance from the phone drains the battery more. Normally I will have the phone near me when I sleep, but renently it has been downstairs. Going to experiment a bit.

Need an elasticated strap for my watch. Loads of cheap ones on Amazon but a number of reviews saying that they've lost watches because of them so I've gone down the official Apple route, but the prices are rather eye watering. I've ordered a silicon one for £49, but the braided version is £99!

I’ve been using a couple of cheapo (less than £10) elasticated straps from Amazon for a couple of years with no problems. The one I bought is currently unavailable so no point in linking.

I got an el cheapo off amazon that's elastic. It's been pretty good. Adepoy I think the brand was.

Much more comfortable than any of the others I've tried. I have a draw full of cast off watch straps that are annoying after days or randomly 3 months later.

Yeah, I have no doubt there are good cheap ones out there but I did manage to lose my Amazfit watch a couple of weeks ago when the strap came off (fortunately it was handed in). A £40 watch is one thing but a £400 one is quite another!

Just an observation, but it seems the Amazfit not a similar strap fitting to the Apple one, it looks more like a traditional “pin” fitting?

I think I had a fitbit one fall off. You can knock the rotating arm thing and off it pops.

The apple watch slidey mount seems much more robust.

It doesn’t require much from from the strap other than a shaped bit of plastic — the plastic has to be of suitable quality I suppose but that’s not difficult.

I have got a couple of "Lacebands" braided loops, which are decent. Although the sizing is annoying, I ended up having to buy twice as the first was too tight.

Only one night, but having the phone upstairs seems to have fixed the battery drain.

That's interesting and I'd be interested to know more about your results.

"On the strength of this thread I have set my watch up for the sleep function and have tried it for two nights now. On both nights the battery has drained by about 10% with approximately seven hours of night use. That's with my iPhone switched completely off but still in the same room which as far as I know shouldn't make any difference"

I had read a while ago that the watch would use the phone for geonavigation stuff when out and about, so if you went out with just the watch you used more power than if you took the phone too.

Usually I have my phone in the bedroom, but had started leaving it plugged in downstairs. Both devices on the same WiFi, but not in bluetooth distance. I’ll carry on experimenting, but am pleased about last night’s low battery drain!

I take it you have cellular on your watch?

Updated from WatchOS 10 Beta 2 to Beta 3 and from iOS17 Beta 2 to Beta 3 yesterday.

All the gremlins seem to have gone thankfully.

Still don’t like the “End Call” button placement but it’s a very minor grumble

I updated from IOS17 Beta 2 to 3 on my iPhone 14 Max Pro and having nothing but issues :( overheating, locking apps, had to reboot each time an app stops working, lost count of the reboots already, hoping another patch for this beta is released early next week

Ouch! Thankfully I’ve not experienced that level of instability since Beta 1!

WatchOS on the other hand was awful until Beta 3, watch was ridiculously laggy and often just locked-up

Did my own battery test for the Watch. Took it off charge Friday at 9pm and have worn it continuously until just now when I put it back on charge at 7% so pretty much 48 hours. Does this mirror other peoples' experiences?

By the way, I put it on charge literally a few minutes ago and it's already at 48%!

Another question (I did warn you), has anyone swum with their watch on? I have hydrotherapy on Wednesday, not sure whether to wear it in the pool or not!

I’ve taken mine swimming, just note that if you’re not logging it as a swimming workout you should ‘water lock’ it manually.

Open control-centre on the watch and tap the droplet image

No chance, I’m lucky if I see 24hrs, but everyone’s use-case is different, mine logs about 4hrs of workouts in various forms every day, which does seem to nail the battery somewhat

Taken mine swimming in The Med. I wouldn't call it hydrotherapy!

I have lots of times, but I find it is dependent of strap - as the fabric ones hold water, they are fine whilst in the water, but stay wet afterwards. I'd advise swapping to one of the fluoroelastomer sport bands before getting in the water.

Simple question for those that know.

For the past few nights I've been using the sleep function on my Apple Watch with a wind down time of 30 minutes and I must admit I'm enjoying the function very much. The thing that baffles me is when my watch goes into that function it also makes every Apple device within the house also go into that dark screen and the little bed emblem display in the top right of any screen including my wife's units (she doesn't have an Apple watch just an iPhone & iPad). I wonder if this is normal and if and how I can stop it from happening? it doesn't stop her from using her devices so not a serious problem.

I use the sleep function but haven’t seen this (Apple watch 6).

One thing I forgot to add is my wife has her units connected to the house wi-fi all the time she's around, where I have my iPhone just on cellular. The other thing is we both use the same Apple ID meaning if I download a new app etc then it would also download to her units and if she doesn't want to use it we just delete it from her devices.

The Apple ID bit would explain why it happens to hers though not why it happens at all though it seems quite logical if you are saying it happens when your watch either believes you are asleep or perhaps you have set a ”bed-time”?

Many thanks for that Richard, I'll try a few more tests to see if I can stop it from happening.

It will be the same AppleID - if you want to share apps etc, without sharing an AppleID (I imagine that your current set up could get annoying with FaceTime/iMessage etc), you can set up "Family sharing", so you can have 2 separate AppleIDs, but still have all of your apps available to both.

I used it for the first time last night and my iPhone also went dark, but my MacBook didn't.

Many thanks for that Lewis, I new nothing about "Family Sharing".

Many thanks for that Marc, I fully expected it to affect my iPhone but not everything else.
