Anyone else use 500px?

I'm reserving my better photos for it though as it seems to be a very high standard website.

Just registered to the site, do not have any pictures good enough to upload on there just yet.

I'm thinking about signing up to this but not sure at the moment if my shots are up to the standard required on there...

There's some great work there! Not sure if mine is up to the standard

I'm just not sure any of my shots are worthy of being on 500px

It's just me that thinks this then. I still joined and added a few pics. I'll add a few people from this thread over the coming days.

How so mate?

In my opinion, the quality of photography on 500px is superb and blows away the best of Flickr's content. If you look at "7 days interesting" on Flickr, you'll see some really good photos.

When I started photography about 5 years ago I spent a few weeks before getting a camera, looking at "7 days" and working out what it is that differentiates a good shot from a not-so-good one, so it's a very valuable resource. Flickr is also a reasonably-priced off-site storage space.

But for showcasing your photography, 500px is hard to beat. And the look of the site is something that other photo-hosting sites are trying to emulate or better.

I find things slip down so fast that you often get a few views and comments/votes within minutes then they are hardly looked at again.
The groups system in flickr works well in that you can expose them to an audience with similar interests.
Incidentally you can use 500px as a host to hotlink (e.g. here) by manually grabbing the image url from the embed code they supply.

I've been trying this but I cant seem to figure it out? Any ideas? I dont really use flickr anymore and would much prefer to share images from 500px for critique etc

I use Flickr to dump all my photos on to then use 500px to share the photos I like the most, the dislike function is a bit of a pain when you get to no1 page in popular then 10 mins later you can be on p3 because the dislike is kind of used as a 'get out of my way button' more than a bit of critique on a photo that needs it, ive seen some exceptional work on there hanging around the lower ends because as it was rising some troll decided to dislike it out of spite and down it goes into the pages that nobody really sees which is a shame as it then wont get the views it deserves.
Saying that I still think the best place to showcase your best work to the world and is worth the money for the account.

Page 1! Chance would be a fine thing. ;)

I don't see why there is a 'dislike' button. If you don't like a picture, then you don't click the 'like' button.

Then there wouldn't be any 'tactical' voting, the pictures that are the most popular would be the ones people had been bothered to press the 'like' button.

I've just signed up both here (hi) and to 500px. As an ex-Yahoo, Flickr has always had a special place in my heart, but in the early days I used it for uploading all sorts of random photos so it's not really representative of the kinds of shots I take these days. 500px gives me the chance to start afresh, and looks to be a great source of inspiration (and intimidation).

I've imported some of the favourites from my Flickr stream, mostly because I couldn't stand to have an empty portfolio.

Some beautiful work you have on there Mark. Completely agree re the dislike button. Once the tactical dislikes knock it out of the couple of pages the image can never quite recover. It does seem to be the case that posting an image about 7am is about the best time to get it high up, and if it doesn't get hit by the dislikes it can stay there all day.

Totally agree in the dislike button, I had an image sitting on 92. Something one minute then within 10 mins it was down on 78 :(

Pain in the bum tbh

well i have ceased in being awesome......dont seem to be benefiting from it.......

I didn't realise that there was a dislike button.
Had a few images going along quite nicely one minute, first page then look a bit later and its way down the pages.:(
I agree with the posts above reference the dislike, not required IMHO if you dont like something then move along. I do like the site besides that, there are some fantastic photographers on there, very inspirational. Iain

I'm there, though I tend to be much more active on Flickr, for the social aspect - Flickr's groups do have quite a sense of community.

There's absolutely no faulting the level of talent on 500px, though - it's a humbling place indeed. ^_^;

Is it possible to see exif data on 500px, only reason I ask is that I see it as a learning tool, what settings, camera and lenses people are using to get such pictures. I agree there a lot of talent on there.

Do you have an iPad?

The app from 500px is great and that also allows you to view the exit with a simple swipe.

One of my images hit 94.1 today but then got lost in numerous pages due to mass uploads :( So close yet so far lol. Had a few images which went into the 80s, then dropped sharply and have gone back up again. Its a very hard website to work out peoples voting habits and what actually gets noticed. Seems that my current trend of photos is getting the best acclaim though, so must be doing something right

Yeah,

Cheers for that, I'll have a look at that later, it is a very good app, I have it but have not seen the data on any of the pictures.

Press the icon in the lower right to view comments and then swipe left , the exif will show then. :)

Just reading this, and figured I'd get in on the act, being new an' all. :D

Here's me: http://500px.com/orangematt I'll try go back through the thread and add as many as I can so I can get to know the TP community a little more :)
