FILM Photographer of the Year 2018 - Discussion

Time to get one last film into the tank. Nothing like the sound of a deadline screaming towards you.

and another one that got away - looked good through the viewfinder :film::sulk:

If I had £1 for every time I think I've got a cracking shot on film, only to be somewhat underwhelmed when the results are in... well, I'd probably just spend it on buying more film!

I had the same problem with a watch chain in Chains earlier in the year, both on focusing and exposure. I blame myself for getting the exposure wrong, but the focusing was the best I could get it at the time of shooting. There ain't much room for error at close range! :$

Hi Peter,

Still struggling with flash exposure using the bellows - I'm trying to work out the light loss at different extensions, then trying to get a 'nice flame' was also just luck! (Pleased I do my own film developing & scanning!)

Tell me about it, got a roll back last week which was supposed to have the winning macro photo on it and there wasn't one that was worth showing to anyone :D

That sounds all too familiar - happens most months for me ...... I do at least have lenses that will fit real cameras and ןɐʇıƃıp versions so can experiment (not that it always helps).

Yep, close up and macro wasn't easy with film, with even mildly moving targets presenting a real challenge, and I think this should be born in mind when comes to looking at the results and voting, with technical excellence coming to the fore. And no, I haven't got anything for this yet either!

Oh, and don't forget this is close-up and macro, not microscopy; so perhaps anyone getting too frisky with magnification could find they're looking at a close-up of the business end of Carl's ban hammer! Best of luck everyone. (y)

Puts away the Leitz microscope .......

Puts away the Leitz microscope .......
Puts away the x 2 macro converter and notices it's set to 'M' and not 'A', and hopes this setting might have moved when taking the converter off the camera! Never mind, guess what's going to be checked first next time! Besides, what doesn't kill our photos hopefully makes the ones that survive even stronger. :)

I don't think macro is disallowed... or even micro?

I'm trying to work out how big a small thing I can get away with. ;) I have a nice shot of a small elephant... :D:D:D

As far as I'm aware macro is fine (after all, the subject is close-up and macro), but out-and-out photo microscopy is a different discipline so shouldn't be confused with macro photography - eg using standard macro or close-up type kit (bellows, extension tubes or standard type macro lenses).

If you recall, there was quite a bit of debate about macro photography and not everyone having access to close-up and macro kit during the subject suggestions and selection discussion; on balance it was chosen as a subject due to the fact that close-up lens converters, reversing rings or extension tubes could be bought quite cheaply, so it was decided that the subject shouldn't exclude too many participants. I think if we allow photo microscopy then it's not going to be fair to the majority of people who haven't got the specialist kit this requires. (y)

As for the small elephant, are you sure it was actually small and not just far away? ;)

and for the Simpsons fans ...

Uh, Sir, why don’t you just use real cows?

Cows don’t look like cows on film. You gotta use horses.

What do you do if you want something that looks like a horse?

Ehh, usually we just tape a bunch of cats together.

What always confuses me (as I went to a grammar school and was forced to study Latin and Greek) is that the root of the word macro in Greek means long or large ! So taking a picture of something large or long could be Macro photography.

I don't recall the details (though I guess I could look the discussion up)... my thought is that our tradition is to allow for the use of shoehorns, crowbars etc, relying on the voters to decide on the relevance of the image to the topic. So I wouldn't expect the use of a banhammer even for my pic of an extremely small elephant taken at a magnification of 10:1! But I might not expect many votes.

But I'll need to check that elephant pic... maybe it really IS a very long way away!

There aren't any rules on what equipment you can and can't use providing the image is taken on film. If we start putting rules in place to limit people, then we start going down a really slippery slope IMO. It would be like banning 8x10's as I don't own one, or stopping someone from entering a Scottish landscape photo as it's too far for me to travel etc.

Carl, I think you're missing the point here? I was bearing in mind the original 'nominate some subjects' discussion, which was more than a passing comment and involved more than two members, that expressed concerns about macro being a subject on the grounds that it required specialist kit which (allegedly) quite a few people don't have. The discussion went on and people pointed out that reversing rings were cheaply available and eventually it was agreed that it shouldn't put people off entering, so it went forward as a subject, with 'close-up' seemingly being added to macro to make it more inclusive.

I was glad about that, as it I was one of the ones who suggested macro in the first place. However, macro is one subject and photo microscopy is another, and one that does require specialist kit... not least of which is a microscope! In this instance, and bearing in mind the original discussion and members concerns, I feel it would be better to stick to close-up and macro, and leave photo microscopy out of the equation.

I've only raised this as I remembered the original debate and wanted to reflect the feelings of those who took time to contribute to the discussion. I do actually have a microscope, which I use for work, so for me it's not about an absence of kit, merely ensuring that a subject is as inclusive and 'level playing field' as possible to prevent people from becoming disheartened as the year goes on. After all, if entry numbers start falling off because people become disillusioned then it's not going to be much of a competition is it?

I wasn’t involved in the original debate and can see both sides of the argument however for me it all seems a bit academic because I can never figure out what makes people vote the way they do. There is no saying that submitting a photo from a microscope or the Hubble space telescope would give someone a significant advantage, in fact it may well count against them.

:runaway::runaway::runaway: Having not had great service off filmdev last time I used them, I sent the roll I was relying on for this month to to Peak over a week ago and just got an email saying they are posting it today. I mean how dare they have a day off for the bank holiday, I was in work yesterday so so should everyone else :bat:

Here's hoping it arrives by Friday because of course all the frames on that roll will be winners

We sent some rolls to FilmDev on Friday, one of which has my experimental macro pics on it, so hoping to get the download soon. Luckily, I do have a close up picture ready and waiting in the event that the macro pics turn out to be utter rubbish!! :D

Maybe try AG Photolab next time? If I post on a Monday the negs (and scan CD if requested) are usually back through the letterbox by Thursday post, and quite often by Weds post.

Hope they don't get them mixed up with mine... I've just had the payment request as I was typing this, so I should find out soon! By the sounds of it we're both in the same boat, so best of luck Mrs S. (y)

Have you guys/girls not heard? @Carl Hall closed the thread a few days early (yesterday) due to lack of submissions - unlucky

Almost got me there. Now to my dilemma. There is the macro\close-up shot I like, the one my wife likes, the one my daughter likes and finally the one nobody likes. Anybody got a D4 ? (D&D reference)

When I saw @RaglanSurf 's entry, I had to flick to the top to remember what the theme actually was. Very fitting, too. :D
