Hmm, time to dump flickr and finally build my own website?

IG just hits me with advertising followers every time I log in, can't get along with that platform at all. I joined it when it came out first and upload the odd photo every 4-5mths or so at best, yet I still get new followers - who almost always turn out to be some s***ty account leeching on to people to advertise for them. Give me Flickr over any of these crap-apps any day. Yes, you may have to pay to get the full benefit, but that was the case a few years back too when a pro account was about $30. It's a bit more now but so is LR - I remember buying the full versions of that for £70, now it's a tenner a month, bit of a hike there.

I'm surprised a successor to Flickr hasn't already come along that does what it does, but better, and with more offered. It seems a little outdated by today's standards.

Instagram is still great, but I feel like its uses/target audience are different.

I've been messing around with NextCloud at home (open source Dropbox clone). I like the idea of hosting image backups on it and linking to them from a website.
It appears to have a gallery plugin.

That's funny, I find it to be a vital interchange. But you have to put a bit of effort in. Like the rest of life, it's not a free lunch, but that's reasonable.
To do what? Could you be less vague?

Same, I'm still Admin on groups on Flickr for cameras I no longer even use, but still answering questions and removing hit-and-run images that don't belong from the pools. I probably learned more about photography on there over the past decade than I've done anywhere else, inc here. It was far better back when I started on there , much more discussion and general involvement, but all of that is still present if you look for it. I think Flickr is just too much for the lazy, the ones who simply want to drop images and get 'likes' [favorites on Flickr]

As for nowhere else to go ... I'd say my images get viewed and commented on way more on FB than anywhere else, much as I don't get along with the platform in general it is where I'll get the most attention without question.

If you want to show off your own work and learn from what others are doing, I don't know a better place at the moment, no doubt about it.

I use Instagram exclusively (haven't used Flickr before) and can't say I agree with the belief you have to pay to get any where with it. As with any social media, you get out of it what you put into it. Posting images regularly aside (which should be common sense - at the bare minimum 1 new image a week), you need to be engaging with your audience as well. That doesn't mean answering questions to comments you get on your own work, it means liking and adding comments to other people's photos as well as engaging with your audience through Instagram stories.

I think too many people may expect to upload quality photos and have a flood of followers/likes/comments by doing nothing else. It doesn't work like that.

Sure, you have to put some work into that. But I'm interested in what others do, so I watch the work of the people I "follow" and I only favor what I really like and not in return for receiving attention.
And I don't understand people who work with scripts and favor what they can do to get as many favorites of their own photos as possible. It's all just deception. I simply block these accounts.

Having just bought a new camera after a couple of years away from photography (save for iPhone snaps) it strikes me that there is a gap in the market where Flickr once was.

I used to use Flickr alot and in the past have paid for pro membership more than once. The groups and communities were great, comments on pictures were plentiful and at times helpful, as well as being able to search for photos taken with a specific body or lens, somewhere to have an off-site copy and of course to enable bb code to be copied and pasted so that photos can be displayed on forums such as TP.

Instagram does have a sort of community feel, but it seems as though it is more about viewing one photo at a time in your ‘feed’ and the comments seem to mostly be about reciprocation - a like for a like.

Facebook does of course allow sharing of photos amongst friends and again there are groups that can be joined. They seem to do something pretty hideous with compression when the photo is uploading.

Finally, there are many ways to host your own websites to show off your portfolio and even gather sales from the photos if you’re lucky (or talented) or both!

I guess it does come down to what you’re trying to achieve - for me, it’s a case of resigning myself to having to use all of the above rather than one specific solution. Having to use multiple sites and services does make my ocd twitch though - feels very cluttered and disjointed.

Don’t get me started on the Lightroom subscription model

Mine seems ok now. Was a bit slow on certain bits earlier, like "recent activity" which just stalled.

As previously posted I renewed my subscription with the code( £28.33) last year with the intention of sourcing a new host.
All I can say is where the hell did that year go?

I've just received a "statement" telling me that they will be taking $49.99, in a months time ( = £38.89, so that's up roughly a tenner on last years.)
I guess I'm in for another year ....

I have just had the same email.
I also had planned on sorting something else in the meantime but forgot :banghead:

As above where the hell did that year go? :(

.... How time flies when you are enjoying yourself, eh? :D

I haven't had the subs email yet but am happy to renew. Flickr is a bit of a luxury but it's where I see most of other photographer's efforts which inspire me and its photostream is also a very good 'portfolio' overview of one's own efforts.

I don't often post my images here on TP but it's an invaluable host when I do. I don't understand some people hiding their camera+lens info and settings though

Where the hell has this year gone, flown by quick.

I didn't think I was, but I guess I must have been :D

I just "save for web and devices" ( It always gives me a little chuckle when its an Arachnid :D )
And that automatically takes out most of the info.
So yes, guilty as charged :D

Heh, yep! I cancelled mine. Picked up Pro last year just to see what SmugMug would do with it and other than spend my money, I can't see anything. Back to Free for me.

Just had the renewal email - as above I can't see that SmugMug have done anything at all that I noticed.
I'm seriously considering just dumping the sub and using the free 1000 for the latest images.
A little time left to ponder but it doesn't seem like a sensible use of money for me this time around.

BUGGER! :(
I always get a months notice.
(I hope that hasn't put the mockers on it for next year )

If the price stays under £30 then I'll renew, but that's pretty much the breaking point for me.

I partially blame myself, I’d seen your post about the renewal email but assumed I still had some time as I hadn’t received my email. Fuming, I’ve only got 800 odd images on there wasn’t gonna renew this year.

:( Oh well mark it on your calendar for next year, otherwise it'll be here again!
I thought I had ages too, TBH.

but more that I don't think it's worth it.
Tough call TBH, yes its a massive increase, but what is stand alone web space going to cost?
And I'm not sure I have the knowledge to build / run one.

I pay £3 a month for hosting. You could do this and just stick your images up there, without having web-pages - but each image could be linked to (by its web address) to display it in an external source.

You can get templates, many are free too, for site design. But you generally have to personalise them (they come stuffed with sample content) and this involves coding in a text editor.

A website might tend to have a different function to a Flickr presence, possibly to do with sellng work. If you wanted to sell, then a basic Smugmug a/c is the same cost as Flickr.

But Flickr to me isn't about storage, it's about community. And if you pay up, then people who aren't logged in (whether Flickr members or not) can browse your stuff without seeing pesky ads which are a bit of a turn-off. A personal website doesn't really have the same sharing function - it's not much a community thing, and you have to lead people to it - people mostly won't want to bother.

£36 / a year not much in it between flickr then,
and for a technophobe I guess the other 4 quid is not too terrible.

I used to enjoy managing a website (built on Notepad) but this is a good point about costing pretty much the same.

BTW non-registered flickr users DO see ads - this was one of the reasons I wouldn't have a pro account on Photobucket, because you couldn't pay them to not show ads to unregistered visitors, and their ads were really intrusive (even included porn occasionally). I hope Flickr won't get as bad as PB.

I've never yet seen an ad on my "free" one. FF seems to be doing a pretty good job.

Possibly because you're registered? However I do recal viewing another users images on my work computer, and moving through their photostream every 3rd picture was an advert.

I have 2 accounts totally separate, one I pay for ( big stuff) the other I don't, ( small stuff) as above I've never seen an ad of the free one.
