Interwebby webinar session thingy

I've had one of my crazy ideas, potentially useful in this lockdown situation. Right now I just want to run it past everyone and see whether there is enough support for it . . .

The idea is that we set up a webinar on lighting, almost certainly using Zoom software (free). We could run it on one or more evenings, as the pubs clearly need to stay shut for a long time.

People can ask questions, show examples of challenges that they need to overcome and hopefully get answers. I'll be happy to host it but my own knowledge is both specialised and limited, so maybe another one or two other people could help to lead it. I already have a couple of people who I can ask to "volunteer"

Is this a good idea or not?

I’d be there if possible.

Plus 1 for me

Happy to chip in with whatever Garry - but I don’t have your level of knowledge.
Offer accepted, which is great as I don't now need to bully you:)
We have different types of knowledge, you know far more about flashguns than I do for example, and if there are questions that involve using lighting with Canon cameras then you're streets ahead of me there too - but don't take that as a compliment because most other people do too:).

Well, we've got a few people interested so far, it's a start.

If it goes ahead I'm thinking of a choice of either Friday or Sunday (I'm free on either day) at 8 p.m. It will take a few minutes before then for everyone to join in, and the session will end at about 8.30. Zoom is completely free for users (you) but as host I can only be active for 40 minutes at a time, hence the strict time constraints. If I paid their monthly subscription fee then it could be for much longer, but I don't want to do that, or at least not at this stage.

If we get enough interest then I'll set it up for one of these days (please let me know which you'd prefer) and then I'll have the info that you need to join in.

Either works for me - I think the time limit had been lifted during the crisis as well. I was in a zoom conference last week which lasted over an hour, and there was s message flashed up at the 40 minute mark to that effect.

I'm easy, should be able to make either of those :)

I'd do my best to be there too, and thanks Garry - another example of you doing a lot to help others..!

OK then, let's do it..

Meeting starts at 8 p.m. on Friday 8th May, but please join as soon as possible after 7.55 p.m. Will last until about 8.35 or until everyone gets bored, whichever happens first, but may go on a bit longer if it doesn't cut off after the 40 minutes that is supposed to be allowed.

There's a limit of not more than 100 people, can't see that being a problem.

It's going to run on Zoom, if it's good enough for Boris Johnson and his lot then it should be fine for us.

I want this to be open and informal, so everyone will come straight in to the meeting and will be able to speak whenever they want to, but obviously it won't work if everyone talks at once.

It can be done via your computer or mobile phone, if you have a webcam and want to use it then that's fine, if you don't then that's fine too. I'll have my camera on but it seems that you can turn it off if you don't want to see me, which is probably a good choice:)

You don't need to have a Zoom account, please see this video to learn how to join the meeting. https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/ar...0bccd769437389150bbeb0f12eeaa2c949c&zcid=1670

The meeting URL will be https://us04web.zoom.us/j/6080664647?pwd=S3RLdEhhWVhUS0hhaWxOTGYweGlOUT09

You'll need the meeting password, 9TEPsc

Everything seems straightforward and idiot-proof but the the people at Zoom don't know how incompetent I am at I.T. and it's very possible that I'll mess it up, but I'll try to learn more about it in advance.

If this idea works then we can repeat it, and if it doesn't then I think that it will still have been worth trying.

Thank you Gary, I’ll be there :)

Hi Garry.

Thanks I will endevour to download the software and join in.

Gaz

A reminder - it's tonight at 8 p.m.
My side of it will be live at 7.55 for an 8 o'clock kick off.
We are limited to 40 minutes (although it's possible that Zoom aren't enforcing their 40 minute rule, we'll find out) so we will need to hit the ground running.
Can I ask that those who are joining in allow themselves enough time to set it up, and set a reminder or alarm so that they can go straight in to the meeting at 7.55?

Another one who will be listening more than talking here - Just got it all set up and ready.
As Bebop says, many thanks to Garry and Phil for doing this. I've always wondered if Phil looks like his avatar picture, no idea why, just one of the faces that seem to have been here forever without ageing.....

It’s quite an old pic, but I still look mostly like that other than I can’t get to the barbers.

Garry has posted links to a video I make fleeting appearances in, not attractive.

Thank you Garry and Phil too.
Good to hear a few voices, shame there weren't more, but next time maybe ?
