Can anyone recommend a good photography magazine? I've had a glance through most of the main ones but think I might go ahead and subscribe to one, before I get banned from WHSmith.

Interested to hear opinions on who has the best reviews/ content, and who is just full of adverts. I'm fairly new to "serious" photography.

Cheers.

To be honest I think unless you buy a few and then find one that you especially like, I'd just buy which ever one has articles that interest you in that particular issue.

If you use a Canon camera, I can recommend Photo Plus. I'm in my third year of subscription and have learned loads and picked up some great tips. There is also a free CD every month with Photoshop tutorials.

Personally I tend to browse for most suitable articles ,price , and freebies (Am .photograpther ) this week was free lens case !
Hence I buy issues as and when .

AP is the one I try not to miss. Excellent reviews, interesting features on photos, photographers and kit. Loads of ads, yes but even they are interesting (IMO).

genuinely depends what you're after from the magazine but if i'm honest the majority of the time you'll be better buying a book on the subject rather than subscribing as many just rehash the same old again and again and again :)

I like Digital SLR Photography, not all technique and has a few interesting articles on specific photographers or travel destinations
Had it on a trial five issues for a fiver and decided to carry on getting it

Bought Photography Monthly quite regularly until their relaunch early this year when in my opinion it became total tom tit

Photo Plus is worthwhile for Canon user. Digital SLR mag (as above) is great mag as well. Be aware as others have said, over a 12 month period things can get repeated - sometimes word for word !

Shame the OP is so far away, I have plenty of old issues of a few titles that he would be welcome to have a flick through to see which he likes.

The main ones I read are Digital SLR magazine and Photography Monthly and I had subscriptions to both at one time, but cancelled them when I found the same features being repeated e.g. How to take Spring pictures, how to take holiday pictures, how to take macro pictures etc etc!

Nowadays I do as others have said above and only buy one when it has a feature or review I'm interested in, but with so much great information online I buy few and far between these days.

I have had a few copies of Turning Pro and it has some good guides and advice in. Including insurance etc etc...

Its not out often but worth a look even just to see Crash Taylor's wedding work

Cheers,

As others have suggested, I think I'll just have to try a few out. I had a feeling repetition of articles might be an issue. I'll have a look and either subscribe to the one that seems most interesting, or just vary what I buy issue to issue, based on what looks good in a given month. Or I might just stick with TP for the advice I need

I've read a few different magazines over the last couple of years, but I have just discovered "Digital SLR Photography" in the last couple of months which I think is the best one I've come across so far. I have also bought the Landscape and Portrait "magbooks" from the same people which you can get in WHSmith which I have found excellent.

I read "Digital Photo".
I like the blend of readers shots with critique, technical know hows, and general news and reviews.
