Nikon 1 Series (V1/ V2/ J1 etc) owners thread....

Well I have gone and ordered it as its my birthday today, and I figure I deserve it

Should have it by the end of the week.

Oh thats nice Mike :)

My 70-300 turned up this afternoon. Hoping to get out Saturday morning to give it a test.

Thanks, looking forward to seeing some results.

A few from this mornings try out of the Nikon 1 70-300m VR. Exif is intact.

Cracking start,i take it your pleased with those ;)

Yes I am Mike however Photobucket seems to have murdered them a bit and they were all cropped. I will have a go at something a bit closer next time.

It can only get better with more use.

Looking good so far Ian - how was it for moving / in flight shots?

Hi Dave,

it seemed fine l used auto area for the flight shots and it locked quickly and tracked the subject well. Single point worked fine as well, just need to get used to it now. It seems sharp wide open at F5.6

Both these have just been converted to jpeg no other processing done.

ok I think I am getting a j4 and dive case.
It will have the 10-30.
how good is 10mm 2.8 ?
are there another pancake style lenses I should be looking at ?
I have a big nikon would the sigma 150-500 would that work with the j4 for an extreme crop ?

Great thread, ive just about read it all, over the last couple of days.

Like a good number of people, i remember when the Nikon 1 series was released, i read up on it, but dismissed the system!! which may well have been an error on my part. :$
Anyway, fast forward to now, and i think i might give either a V1 or V2 a go.
I have a D700 (plus a couple of Panasonic bridge cameras, raynox lenses etc) which i use for wildlife/close up/macro subjects. I also have Nikon 300mm f/4D, Nikon micro/macro 105mm VR lenses, so Im guessing with the FT1, both those lenses could work quite well? I have the Sigma 150mm macro APO lens as well, but i doubt this lens will work with the FT1?
I was thinking about getting back into "birding" this winter, so i was looking for a DX body to compliment my D700, such as a D300/D300s, to give me that extra reach, but then I started reading up on these V1/ V2's, with their 2.7 crop factor.
It would appear that the Nikon 1 series cameras could be an all rounder for me, as in - Spring/Summer/Autumn for macro/close up of Butterflies/Dragonflies/Reptiles...then for the Winter months, try some birding with that lovely 2.7 crop factor.

A couple of questions for you guys in the know then please.

a) Has anyone used the nikon micro AF-S DX 40mm f/2.8 lens on one of these bodies? because that combo is supposed to work well. Its not a lens i would normally try, but because of its small size/weight, it converts to over 100mm's with the 2.7 crop factor.

b )How much am i expected to pay for either the V1 or V2 bodies these days? Ive had a quick look on Fleabay, but hard to judge fair prices.

c) Again, whats the going rate of a VT1 too?

Cheers in advance, Paul.

PS. Im still not decided in either a nikon 1 series set up, or just go for a DX body??

I have a V1, with a 10mm lens, and a VT-1.
I bought it with the view of using it for wildlife, although I never got round to it.
With my 80-200 on, it certainly has reach !
To be honest, I think it's a cracking little camera, as the shots on this thread will confirm.
Sadly, mine has been in my gear cupboard for a year without use. I ought to get rid really.

Are you "dangling a carrot" in front of me Gary;) I dont wanna break any forum rules, but yes, think of a price, get it up in the forum classified, and i might be interested.
Although i have no classified buying/selling history on this forum, but ive been a member here for 3 years.

If i was honest, i like to view in person, before i buy...Im such an old fart of a dinosaur in that respect, hence the reason i have zero classified feedback.

You still in Essex...i rarley venture outside of Kent these days ;)

Haha, sorry, now I've read it back it does sound like that, which wasn't my intent, although I suppose I should sell it, as it doesn't get used at all.

If I do put it up on Classifieds, I'll let you know !

I'm still in Essex, but I do get to go to Kent occasionally, but only when my passport is available, obviously !

No worries mate ;)

As long as its not one of those White V1's...I mean, owning a white camera would be like driving a white Ford Escort Convertible............Perfectly ok if you are a Hairdresser from Essex!!!! But us Kent Men dont drive white convertibles;)...well, not unless its a bright sunny Sunday:D

On the other hand, a white camera body, could act as a reflector, for my macro shots..............no, what am i thinking of, white is a no go!

Buying a white V2 kit saved me a lot of money at the time ;)

Testudo/Paul

The FT1 will work with the Sigma. If you are asking if it'll AF with it, then no it won't. You still get the AF 'dot' in your D700 meter though.

Im all for saving money too ;) Im just wondering if a bright/white camera, might "spook" a wild snake(Adder)? because i sometimes get within 6 inches of the snakes head, in order to make the shot. On the other end of the scale, long distance shots of birds, will have no effect, in regards to what colour camera is used...I guess i could cover up the white camera body with a camouflage effect ;)

Cheers for that. My eyes are over 50 years old...i kinda rely on AF ;)

A bit confused here,if its this one why will it not focus on a 1 series http://www.amazon.co.uk/-/dp/B00063KO5C .

Some older Sigmas will and some will not,it may be worth asking Sigma if there is a firmware update

White Nikon V1 seemed a good idea when I was in Melbourne had the option to get one for a good price.

Then I went to Bangkok working but had a day to myself and travelled on an excursion train which crossed the (newer) Bridge over the River Kwai. I was invited into the cab of the train as we crossed the river so took this video with the V1.... when I got home I regretted having bought a white one!

From what i understand and i have always done it the FT-1 should be fitted to the lens first, then the whole unit fitted to the camera,it would be more convenient and quicker in the field if the FT-1 was on the camera ready to fit to a tripod mounted lens, any one do it this way round.

Im "in the dark" over this, but i think it will only AF on the more recent OS Sigma 150mm macro lens??
Its not a deal breaker, my non OS 150 macro works a treat on my D700...and thinking about it, with the 2.7 crop factor of a V1, i reckon it might prove a challenge to use approx 400mm for close up/macro work? No, i think shorter focal zoom lenses with either a Raynox or close up achromatic filter, could be the easier option to use?

Cool Vid...To be fair, even your fingers/arm/watch can be seen in the reflection at times, but yeah, that White body sure shines;)

Ive been checking out some Fleabay prices lately...

J1's go for £50...what a bargain!
V1's sell for just over £100.
An FT1 just sold for £104.
Im not sure about V2's, one did just sell for £220!...I think there is a scammer on Fleabay??? They are offering new V2's with a kit lens for £160!!!...i think thats BS.
Maybe i should have bid on this one? - a boxed V1 with both 10-30mm and 30-110mm lenses sold for £167.00...another bargain i reckon.

Cheapest Ive seen a mint boxed V1 an kit lens is £135...but that was on Gumtree, not Fleabay...I would have probably bought this, but it was a bloody white one!

It seems there are more White bodies than Black, but since Im in no real rush, i will hold out for a Black one...maybe.

So, Im "on board" with a V1/FT1 Kit now. ;)
Had a quick session on Saturday, but the weather has not been kind!!! went to a local lake, shot a couple of 100 pics of Birds, using just the Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4D.
At least 50% of images binned through missing the focus, but not the best light, suspect camera settings? and of course...I handheld (never use a tripod/monopod).
I did capture a very long range couple of images of a hovering Female Kestrel though...and no way, would i have made those distant shots with my D700/300mm f'/4D, or a DX body at that range/distance. I also doubt my Panasonic FZ150 with a Nikon TC-E15ED would have captured the Kestrel at that distance(with a grey/overcast sky) either.

Note - Attached my Sigma 150mm f/2.8 APO DG macro lens to the v1...works fine, auto focuses just as my Nikon 105mm VR does, so wherever on the "net" i read that the Sigma 150 macro lens does not AF on a v1 body??? well, they were wrong!

Looking at getting a V1 and FT1. Does anybody have any experience of using it with a Sigma 70-200 OS with Kenko 1.4 TC?
The Siggy has been updated with the latest firmware too.

yes works great, I have the older sigma 70-200 the one before the os... a nice walk about setup, I'll see if i can find some shots taken with this....

could be a firmware problem? I had the same problem with my 50-500 sigma, wouldn't work for me.. but Mikew could get it to work with his?...mine was the newest 50-500....but my sigma 600mm works brill..

Ive been waiting for some "good light" lately, to test my V1/FT1...but it aint gonna happen anytime soon!!! So, had a go at some images anyway ;)

None of these images are cropped, all shot using the Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4D lens, or the Sigma 150mm macro lens!(just for the 1st Squirrel image).
The Nikon 1.7 teleconverter was used for some of the bird pics too.

Conclusion - Considering the poor light, my images are pretty good, no cropping, handheld (or leaning on a fence post!) Jpegs, and basic/minimal PP/editing.
Im sure that i can capture far better IQ pics, all i need is some good sunlight!...Roll on Spring!

Another "Birding" session on the 31/12/15, using the V1/FT1 an Nikon 300mm f/4D lens combo.

Shooting in A, f/5.6, ISO set to 100 to 400, which meant shutter speed was around 500(when the sun was out!) Jpegs, handheld......bloody windy again!

The "Little Egret" images were challenging, variable low winter light, at least 50 feet distance, shooting down at an angle, etc.

Cheers Paul.

PS. It would appear that you can crop into the images with ease too.

Little Egret (uncropped). Yes, I shot this in Portait...but i mainly use Landscape.

Happy New Year Paul.
Glad to see the V1 getting put to good use.

Happy New Year Paul.
Glad to see the V1 getting put to good use.

Happy New Year to you too Gary.
Yes, as you can see, Ive been a bit busy putting the V1 through various tests.
Im sure i was right, to go with a V1/FT1 for "Birding" through the Winter months, rather than get a Nikon crop body. Cant wait to try the V1 out this Spring, when Reptiles/Butterflies/Dragonflies once again emerge.

I did actually buy a J1 the other day, but that was more for the fact it had a couple of Nikon 1 cx lenses in with the deal!...so it looks like i will have a J1 with the 30-110mm cx lens, and the V1 with the FT1 and an FX macro lens mounted... to take both of these set ups out in the field for macro this Spring/Summer/Autumn, should work well, an cover most of my close/up macro needs.

Cheers Paul.

Another birding session, means another couple of comparison images, from full image to cropped image.

V1/FT1 plus nikon 300mm f/4D lens used. As usual, hand held, Jpegs.

This Buzzard was a bloody long way off! lucky i took my "Bins" with me!

OK, the cropped images suffer some, and would not make for printing quality, but for the kind of images i upload, they work alright for me!
Cheers Paul.

Having a quick play in the rain with the new 300mm on the V2,if only i had the money :(
