Nikon D3S - due three weeks time.

http://www.europe-nikon.com/product/en_GB/products/broad/1862/overview.html

Guess its official then!

FX format professional SLR with a highly sensitive 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, ISO range of 200 to 12,800 extendable by up to 3 stops, D-Movie, 9 fps continuous shooting and 51-point AF system. Redraws the boundaries for professional action photography.

There is no mention of whether the video can be used with autofocus. Until that feature is introduced, it doesn't matter what it looks like or how high the iso is, I won't be parting with any of my money.

In the review I just read, it can use AF in tripod mode.

Lots of sports and news togs had some issues with the AF on the old version. They were crying out for an upgrade for a long time

Not that old turkey again....

The slight corner fall off on a FX body I can agree with because its quite easily demonstrated, but the so called AF issue is starting to bounce around as "the truth" because one person on here constantly refers to it without being able to produce anything like a scientific test to define it or introduce me to the hoard of "pro togs" who know all about it too.

Nikon will be replacing the 70-200 because of the FX "issue", not the other thing.

So any release dates for UK models? It didn't actually say! :( Is this going to completely succeed the D3? or just a step up like the D2Xs was for the D2x then the D2x slowly fades away?

Ed :)

the 85mm macro is a bit of an odd lens to have. appears to be at $529 preorder on amazon, wonder how it will compare to the 105mm, given thats at about $880, and how the price will compare over here.

quite a weird choice of lens to have, but i suppose it'll be lapped up by dx users as a cheaper macro (tamron 90/sigma 105 contender)

In the review I just read, it can use AF in tripod mode.

If it is the same as the D300s, it can't use the af sensors because the mirror is up, it looks like it uses software to detect where it thinks it might be right. I tried it outside my local camera shop to see if it would work on moving subjects, but couldn't focus on the side of a bus doing 10 mph. No use to anyone.

Tripod mode uses contrast detection for AF in liveview and that is being used on the D3s. It wont be fast no, but then most people wanting to use video in a creative way are never going to use AF anyway.

Just had an email from Jacobs, £4199.99 for a pre-order with a free SB900... Thats not a bad deal in truth.

And an 85mm f3.5 VR for DX only.

Whoever is making lens decisions at Nikon should be sacked.

Indeed shocking, certainly someone from there needs a good kick up the arse, it amazes me how they don't seem to be catering for what Nikon users want, they really need people from Nikon to be looking over photography forums to see what people really want/need, there is to big a gap between Nikon and Canon on the lens front.

Flash still has its place and high ISO will never replace it...

that is impressive, not sure if that and the video is worth the extra grand over a standard D3 but still very good....

Dont forget self cleaning sensor and:
"Combined with Nikon’s FX-format sensor, the D3S produces an exceptional tonal range and minimized tone jumps.
Users can expect more accuracy with difficult colour combinations such as skin tones and strong reds in the same frame without over-saturation and finer tonal gradation in highlights, even with extremely bright subject matter."

Which IMHO was always one of the big drawbacks of Nikon. If they sort out the skin tones, that will be the end of Canon for many:D

Always depends who you ask. They will have done research into the best, most profitable area of the market to target next and it almost certainly won't be the high end for most things.

Not to mention there is always a gap between what people always bang on about wanting (latest this that and the other, all the feaures in one box) and what they then all rush out in their millions to buy.

Nikon will almost certainly be confident that this new lens offers them the best financial returns for their investment and not a new 4000 quid piece of specialist glass for photographing ladybirds perfectly or something.

WOW at the iso performance on the D3s... just amazing...

Flash still has its place and high ISO will never replace it...

well, just so happens that nikon have the best flash system too, so it's win win really ^_^ and if you're a studio shooter lit entirely by flash... then the D3x is for you rather than the D3s.

but...

WILL NIKON JUST RELEASE A CAMERA THAT CAN SHOOT AT 1080P ALREADY

just what the hell nikon, what the hell... 720p on your flagship, top end professional camera... canon are wiping the floor for LOTS of video purposes with their 5d2, and soon the 7D, AND they already have a pro video arm that will be constantly saying 'please dont make your stills cameras too good at video...' - nikon don't have that, so could completely wipe the floor and release every indie shooter's ideal camera body, a year before the RED scarlet shows up...but it appears that they blew it. laaaame.

Ive only been given SRP prices for now but as soon as I have my cost prices i'll give you the TP pre order price.

Had a chat with nikon this morning. Have to say amazing. Brand new sensor. Iirc, 30 f/2.8 sensitive cross hair focus points of the 51. Some camera and a photographers dream. Working under poor light with speed needed???? Get one in.

Well done nikon.

It looks very (very) impressive and seems (on paper at least) almost as ground breaking as the original D3.

The low light/High ISO bar has been raised even higher.

Did you ask about lenses? lol

Will have to see a side by side comparison but there is not much in the actual specs to jump up and down about. Just a small improvement whilst waiting for the D4 unless I've missed something.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. Anyone already in the market for a D3 should be happy, although they are probably going to have to pay more than they would a few weeks ago. There won't be floods of people upgrading. But then the D3 is a cracking bit of kit, so it will take a big evolution before many will upgrade.

Couldn't agree more. Perfect exposures can't be achieved without flash in some cirumstances - in daylight or the dark!!

I've found that with CLS being so easy to set-up, that I'm using flash more and more - putting light into dark corners where before I had to accept it was just going to be 'dark' - all my Group-Shots now are being done at 17.00hrs (beautiful golden light across the HLS) and with three SB900's (two in group A and one in Group B) pushing light into the shadows...
So-oooo easy....!

I just got an email about the 'Clinics' to play with the D3S... as a Canon shooter, I wonder how they got my email

From Electronista.com via devicemag.com

"Nikon has just unveiled its new D3s 12-megapixel DSLR camera. A must for the professional photographer, the new Nikon D3s can shoot up to ISO 12,800 in normal settings, has improved 720p HD video (24fps) and can also be manually set to shoot at ISO 102,400, which, significantly enough, is four times more than the original D3.

The new Nikon D3s has been tailor-made to click better in low light mode and any other situation where blur-free shots are crucial. Although the camera brings the same 16-bit pipeline with 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion from the older model, it has made efforts to cut down on chromatic aberration on the horizontal axis.

Equipped with a better dust removal system and an improved 100% viewfinder, the new D3s can also snap JPEG photos while videos are being played, with basic editing features incorporated. If you are on a movie shoot, the D3s gets improved light sensitivity come into play — this helps you draw on the full ISO range while recording low-light video.

On top of that, Nikon D3s shoots at up to nine frames per second, comes with the 51-point auto focus system and the same 3D metering system Nikon had put into its earlier DSLRs. Dual CF cards take care of the storage, which means that you also have the option to shoot RAW/JPEG to separate cards.

Nikon D3s will begin shipping late November, while the new AF-S 85mm f3.5G ED VR – a new DX mount lens – will be ready to ship in early December. The camera is expected to cost close to $5,200 (with the UK price climbing higher at £4200), while the lens could be yours for something close to $530."

Mine only said this ^^^ I think I may have accidentally registered at Focus earlier in the year...

Will it earn me any more money than my current D3s do?

Didn't think so !
