Nikon mirrorless definitely on the way

You'll be surprised how much things change when you leave behind the preconception and the bias behind. Takes a while to get over all that need for a huge DSLR brain washing ;)
Portrait orientation is once again awkward regardless of the body. You'd have to use a vertical grip in either case.
Lol, I have no bias. I started out with Sony, I've owned Canon, Fuji, Olympus and Nikon. I was actually gutted I didn't get on with the A7riii as I'd made my mind up that I deffo wanted it (y)

I'll never understand the balance criticism against smaller cameras. Do people fit a 400mm f2.8 and hold it only by the body? With every camera and lens I've ever owned I hold the camera with my right hand and my left is under the lens to use the zoom and focus rings, balance is then somehow achieved :D
I'm used to pretty heavy lenses (such as the 150-600mm) but balance will sometimes dictate where you hold the lens, the more front heavy the further forward you need to hold the lens. This may or may not be more uncomfortable. I compared lenses that I use regularly and found the A7Riii more uncomfortable to use and more unbalanced.YMMV

Nah they all suck. You'd think an 'innovator' like Sony would have figured out how to Paint things. Don't kids learn that in D&T at GCSEs these days? :p

To be fair, I learnt to paint at School, but I tried painting part of my car once... it did not turn out well.

My old K5 Pentax was terrible too.

subjective to an extent but i think you'll be in the minority thinking the a7 is the perfect size.
my a7 and 35mm f2.8 are perfect for a walk around. but larger glass the grip feels all wrong for me.

I appreciate I am in the minority of people that buy these kinda equipment. Probably the reason I'll never get back the small A7 style body.

I remember when I bought my first smartphone. It was the largest one in the market at the time (HTC desire HD). I was in minority and people told me it was a brick. But by today's standards it's a small phone and most of those people carry around much larger phones. So if that was brick they are carrying around walls lol.

Point is minority or majority the way masses think can change. Simply because I am in minority doesn't make the opposite sides any more or any less valid.

Wasn't that for a screw?
Yeah on my Sony A9.... it was a screw for the hot-shoe mount.
Mine was one of the affected... came back like new with a fully health check etc. No issues regarding service. :)

Well well the Nikon mirrorless hype has certainly generated interest on the internet..... think that's what Nikon wanted.
However lets see what happens once it has been announced... if the specification doesn't live up to expectations then it won't go noticed.
What the forums light up! :D

I've just seen the lenses on the rumor site, 35 and 50mm f1.8's are a good start but I suppose some would rather have seen 35 and 85mm lenses.

It's surprising they thought of making one of their first lenses a reasonably compact 35mm f1.8... that's such a radical move I can understand how Sony still haven't made one.

Yup, stupid of Sony.

Yes, that shocked me when switching. A 35mm 1.8 with the same quality as the 55 1.8 would be superb. I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Was hoping Zeiss would make a Batis 35.

If this Nikon has good eyeAF and native like adapter support I may well switch.

At this stage I think that any thought of switching should be pushed to the back of your mind as we know next to nothing about the camera, its lenses or how adapted lenses or indeed the camera itself will behave.

Granted I was an early A7 adopter and thankfully it worked out for me but not everyone would be happy a limited number of native lenses and relying on adapted (in my case film era) lenses.

God knows why neither Sony or anyone else has done it yet. It is IMO such a glaring hole in the lens line up but no one with a factory seems to have spotted it.

TBH I've toyed with the idea of buying the Nikon if they'd launch with a couple of nice primes and a kit zoom... and voila! That's what they've done. Hats off to Nikon for doing the bleeding obvious that no on in the Sony universe has done in how many years?

I was an early A7 adopter and I used a-mount lenses.
Like I said if its native like adapter support then and only then would I switch. Simply because Nikon has everything I want in terms of glass no EVF bodies so far.

Nor me but I have to admit if the upcoming lightweight Nikon 500mm f5/6 is any good I can see me being very tempted.
Exactly and also their 300mm PF is awesome. Nothing like those on Sony. Perfect lenses for mirrorless

Sony are so close to being very very capable and complete... If Nikon have made a really good camera they'll still be years from where Sony are now, whole system wise. All Sony really need for me is a nice compact 35mm f1.8 and to be honest I'd like to see a 50mm f1.8 too as the current 55mm is that 5mm longer and I do notice that and I don't trust the existing cheapo 50mm due to its cheapo focus system.

Sony could do both but I'm beginning to doubt they ever will. Maybe if Nikon give them a good kicking...

I had a Nikon for a long time but I have no real emotional attachment to any manufacturer so I wont switch just to own a Nikon.

The lack of a 35mm F/2 lens on the FE system always seemed a glaring weakness to me, I suspect hoping to drive sales of the 35mm F/1.4?

Size wise the 50mm being larger than SLR designs isn't really a surprise I spose given the shirt flange distance.

The 35mm F/1.8 looks too small to just be a repurposed version of the FX F-mount lens to me with an adapted built into it, I suspect the 50mm lens might well be better quality than the cheap F-mount version as well and sell at more of a premium.

Exactly Sony is missing 35mm/1.8 and also small PF design lenses like 300mm PF. Both of which I'd buy if they worked like native lenses on whatever body.

The first Sony FE lenses launched were as follows:-
  • Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA
  • Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS
  • Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS
  • Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA
  • Sony FE 70-200 f/4 G OSS

Nikon's offerings seem rather small in comparison.

Actually the 24-70mm and 70-200mm came the following year after the A7 launch. At launch it only had 28-70, 35 and 55. Comparatively Nikon's offering is better.
Not to mention you had to pay a lot for LA-EA adapter which seems to be basically free with nikon.

I'm not sure it will be years, I think they will get some 2.8 lenses out pretty quickly and no doubt Sigma and Tamron already have the mount design

Guess will have to see what the prices come out at.
The Sony A7 was cheap back then, about £1200/1300ish :D

true Sony was lot cheaper but also less capable probably.

Also I wonder if nikon will fall short in battery life too. Sony's z-batteries are more powerful than their DSLR batteries and you still get less battery life than DSLR because of the way mirrorless works. So I wonder if they use same/similar battery if the battery life would last as long as new sonys.

All shall be revealed soon my friend :D

I use mine without a grip too. But it's still kinda awkward compared to having a grip which feels more natural :)

30+ years of doing it without a grip/vertical release means its far more natural for me to not use one :D

Even when I had a grip or vertical release (my D2Xs) I'd still not use it unless I remembered specifically to do so, which was rare

Probably because the 35mm and 50mm are the favourite walkabout one lens do it all primes. I would suspect they will make ‘general’ lenses first and then more ‘specialised/specific’ lenses after. I don’t think the 85mm will be too far away though if they’re wanting to get wedding and portrait togs on board.
