The "Canon Powershot G Series" owners thread

Thanks. It's something to consider. I watched the various videos and can see the two halves are on small springs. It seems on mine the spring has broken or dislodged so I'm hoping they'll fix it before I consider heavy modification. Thanks.

The good news is after a couple of weeks of waiting, my camera is back. It went to Germany for repair! They've fitted a new lens cover mechanism and front element under warranty. Oh, and reset the camera into German!

Mishap on hols in Lisbon ....

Walking in a park with the above case over shoulder, it falls apart, drops to the ground. No damage to the camera! but was disappointed the side came off ... just single ply wood, fake leather and glue.

I glued it back on but removed strap from case, spent the rest of my hols carrying the stapless case inside a little black plastic bag, like a dog walker carrying a giant jobby.

Anyway, I got some good street ...

There are quite a few reviews on the net of that happening with that case. It's the reason I didn't buy one which is a shame.
Nice pics too. [emoji1]

I was looking at a camera case a little while ago, but I decided I prefer camera tucked away in a pocket. Even with a neat small camera case, it would make my little camera feel cumbersome.

Been out with the G7X, doing both photos and videos. Pretty good at photos, and the video quality is really good.
Still not mastered good composition. :(

I don't normally use a camera with the grid lines activated, but will give it a go. It is just street photos look a mess, with people in the background. Or at least it does, when I take the photos. :(

People in the background are a pain if you don't want them there.
What I do is wait and see if no one is about or if it's a busy city see if I can get another angle that wont include people.
Failing that buy a loudspeaker and get everyone to move out the way

I have tried just activating the grid lines, without other display info. It seems you can't have just the grid lines on their own. The LCD screen can get a little messy, with all the info displayed. I am blaming the camera, for my poor photography skills.

Activate grid lines. While looking at the back of your camera press DSP (down button on the wheel). You should get different displays . Choose the one with grid lines only :)

Only seems like there are three options.
  • Option 1 only focus point.
  • Option 2 info on the top and bottom and also on the left and right.
  • Option 3 everything including histogram and camera level. Only setting that has the grid lines.

Maybe I am missing something in the settings, I am looking through the online manual. :)

Hi John .... I wouldn't worry about BG people, they can quite often add to the image. OK, it's nice to have the focal length to blur the BG.

The G7X has a sizeable sensor, meaning you can get away with a big crop in post, 'composing' your image at the same time.

Here's one I like, I'm standing with my back against the wall, camera at waist level, people start crossing the road, I take a few shots (could be done on 'continuous').

That is a good photo, and people are all on the same level. It is easy on the eye.

Most of my photos are probably too wide, and some people are in the top of the frame. This results in some people, looking as though they are floating above others. Probably I need to get in closer.

Camera settings ... f/4, 1/500 sec, iso 250, jpeg

a clear day but no harsh light.

Focal Length: 13.9mm (38.6mm equiv.), so zoomed in just a little. They say that's better than the widest.

People crossing the road in a busy area! that's what you need.

The version above had the TEZENIS word selected and defocus because I thought it looked a bit stark.

Yes. I've just found a way to do it on my D5300. But might take a bit of practice :)

I use Paint.Net (free prog) Two layers, B&W the bottom one, run a soft-edged eraser around the subject on the top one. :)

Most of mine were at f/8 and 24mm, I think this resulted in getting too much in the frame. I need to get out again, and take a little more care what I am doing.

I have not tried using the touch screen shutter yet, might make things worse with my wonky hands. :)

Been taking indoor photos of my dog, been using the flash in the tilt position. Even with bounce flash, I am still getting bright glinting eyes in the dog. I will try different things, such as adjusting flash power, and moving further back with a longer zoom length.

PS

Has this thread run it's course?

I was wondering where your focus point was. Something I have difficulty with, in busy images.

TBH I don't know, somewhere in there. I just aimed at a group crossing the road, then looked at the results later, chose the one in post #455, that was 18 months ago. It was just last week I realised I had the second pic (post #465) on my pc, shopped it and posted here. :D

I can't see the point in touch shutter.

I'd take the dog out to the garden, set camera on Continuous AF to get a shot of him/her jumping through hoops. :D

When I try photos like that, I just end up with people glaring at me. I obviously have not mastered it yet. :)

I have not bothered with the touch shutter since testing it, more of a fad I think...

I have got some lovely outdoor photos of my dog, just struggle a little with indoor flash. Dog's eyes illuminate horribly, just need to keep practicing I think..

I mostly do my photos in raw, and convert in Canon DPP4. It is just so time consuming, and that can sometimes put me off taking photos. I would like to do a lot more SOOC photos, but photos straight out of camera are not always the best, or at least mine aren't. Is anyone tweaking their colours / settings, for Jpegs in the Canon G7X?

I mainly use either the Neutral or Fine Detail colour pre sets, auto WB and or the colour temperature. I am trying to get a sort of desaturated, pastel type colour. I won't say, try and replicate Fuji colours. I am sure people would come along and suggest swapping to Fuji.

PS

I can't recall if I have posted something similar before, apologies if I have.

Little difficult getting close with the G7X, a little hit and miss with focus. Been messing about outdoors with the camera, fingers are freezing and that is not helping.

Hi John, I don't know what you think of the 5 Portraits from Portugal posted above (#445). They're all camera jpeps tweaked in Paint.Net ... straightened, cropped, sharped, levels & curves adjusted. I do it all in that order and it takes fives minutes per pic. OK I'd happily spend a lot more time if there was some benefit to be had. Sometimes I paste two layers, desaturate the bottom one, enhance the top one, then erase any colourful BG distractions.

I wouldn't get too close, stand back a bit and zoom in on the subject, brings it away from the BG, but you've achieved that quite nicely in the above.

Re focusing on the subject ... In Av mode, keep the AF Frame Size on Small, keep it in the centre, aim at your subject, press shoot button halfway, move the camera to frame the shot.
