the eclipse

Last time in 1999 I was using my OM1n and a welding mask. Thought I ought to make an effort as I would be 147 when this happens next so unlikely to make it, got some decent shots much like those above, lots of neighbours came out to have a look through my viewfinder, never been so popular :)

That's the only reason I bothered. I just used my A7cII and 40mm lens + a 10 stop and did a 100% plus crop. It's good enough to send to Mrs WW who's away at the mo.

Well the large format lens worked to project the eclipse just fine although it was a bit bright on the card.
I also used an old crop DSLR with a 500mm mirror lens with a ND1000+2x ND8+ ND128 and a UV filter stacked and used live view to snap some shots.

That is spectacular. I watched all the youtube videos but I'm just not technically - minded enough to set something like that up. Anyone thinking of going to southern Spain in August next year???
 
We had an inundation of flies into our house just as the light dipped below 20%, I just did a pinhole in some mounting board and just 'enjoyed' the experience. If we had some cloud cover then I would've probably tried some photographs.

Thanks Jeremy, hardest part was finding it in the live view. I tried using a tripod at first but couldn't seem to zero in on the thing, the ball head drooping and reflections on the screen made it tough. Handheld was much easier in the end.
 
We'd travelled down to Santander in Spain to be in the path of totality. Unfortunately after a few hours wait at the top of a hill with excellent views in the right direction , it started clouding up about an hour before the start of the eclipse. By the time things started it was too cloudy to even work out where the sun was!

Light levels did drop very significantly during totality as seen in this view of the valley below us with lights coming on all over (about 1 hour before sun set)

I had a Sony A350 and I used a cokin, P694 and a K&F CONCEPT 82mm Variable ND Filter ND2-400 1-9 Stops set to max with 1/100 sec, F32 and ASA 100,

Harriers9: I did not get an orange glow around mine in Malton though but I like the clouds in it. Mine was taken at 19.06. I can't see your info on Opanda.

RyanB: love to know how you took the multipul images.

Davor: Green SERIOUSLY? But I like the moon in the sun shot. HOW?

It was made as a composite with the individual images as layers arranged in Photoshop.

I used a Canon 600D with a Soviet era mirror lens (MTO 500/8) handheld with 5 stacked filters ND1000 + (2x) ND8 + ND128 + UV
Settings were, ISO100, ss 1/1000, the lens is a fixed f8 and I used zoomed in live view to zero in infinity and get my exposures right earlier in the day using the sunspots to gauge as close to perfect focus as I could get. The lens goes way past infinity so once I found it I taped the focus ring down to keep from losing it again for the actual event.

The earlier prep work made it pretty easy as it was essentially a point and shoot after that.

My attempt at a composite. Not a patch on RyanB above but I’m quite pleased with it :)

Liking your arrangement, I missed the earlier part getting to my chosen spot a bit late. On the map it looked like less of a trek than it was...
Did you up the vibrance a bit, that's an amazing orange, I shot RAW but forgot to take it off AWB so in camera all the shots looked monochrome, ended up changing it to 'sunny' when I edited them later which gave the colour back.

In-camera double exposure using image similar to the one above superimposed an a scene half an hour after the eclipse. The real Sun is off to the right and a lot smaller as the scene was 17mm, not 300.

Nikon D5100 with Nikon AF-S D 300mm plus 1.4 teleconverter; Hoya UXII UV, NDPro 1000 and NDPro 64 filters stacked. F5.6 and 1/1000.

Mounted on a Skywatcher GTi.

I was a bit concerned after reading a lot of advice about how "normal" ND filters wouldn't protect sufficiently against UV and IR, but I haven't noticed any ill effects so far.

Obviously, the viewfinder was blanked off, and everything was done via live view.
 
A few of mine. The one at maximum is full frame, the other two are the usual 50% square crop I use to standardise my solar images. There were 4 sunspots in all - one was covered quite early on
About 20 mins to go. Still clear of cloud at this stage

Maximum. Whipped the filter off for this as it tried to do it's impression of the 'diamond ring' you see in a total eclipse. Really thought we weren't going to see this at all

Bummer! I had plans to head for the north coast of Spain this year for the eclipse but they all fell through. It looks like it may have been a good job in the end.....
 

these are amazing, big shout out to Angel Fux. I could see why you may have wanted to be in Spain or Iceland, and the article claims there is another one next year in Spain again. I have no idea what kind of monster lens or telescope he used - seems a far cry from basic 400mm. The totality does open up a lot of options that even the 93% crescent didn't offer.

bummer. I would have driven away from that cloud given that you had some time. Seems a localised one.

I used a 600/6.3 in 2024.

Totality is amazing, and it looks nothing like it does in photos. I saw the 1999 one from a friend's yacht off the French coast. No pics as there was no way I was going to wrestle a 35mm film camera on a small boat when there were only a couple of minutes to just look. I'd love to see another. Would I travel to see it? No, I got lucky the once so I'll leave it there :D

skullfunkerry #101 Can you tell me what shutter, aperture and ASA you used on the first picture and if you used any filters. Just asking as I did not get a red sun which might have something to do with my ND variable filter. Unless you used photoshop to colour it in. You even captured sun spots.

I didn't take any photos, but used a rich tea biscuit as a pin hole camera (you have to hold the biscuit quite close to the paper to see, but it worked). I then ate it.
The thinnest crescent was actually perfectly visible here as the sun managed to find quite a thick cloud at that moment. I did chance it with 400mm, and it pretty much just looks like a crescent moon in the middle of the night; no point in posting.

Having taken shots of the crescent moon and of an eclipsed sun, they are absolutely not the same.

Please post the image, there is a point in posting!
 
I was keeping an eye on the RGB histogram. It looked like the vast majority of the light was red. I put it on sunny white balance and exposed to the right on the red histogram.

1/1000 - must have been a bit brighter than up here. Even at ISO 1600 I didn't get much above 1/13 - which reduced sharpness somewhat. Or my solar film was much thicker!

As Bodian says, it was 1/1000, F/8 and ISO 160. It did come out fairly white from the camera, but I found that whacking both white balance sliders to the right in Affinity brought the orange back.

It was pretty bright, there was pretty much no cloud at all here.

Thanks. I did up the saturation a bit on a few of the earlier shots in order to make them match the later ones that became a deeper orange as the sun dropped in the sky. The solar film I used naturally produces quite an intense colour so very little extra saturation was needed to get to that point.
