The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

Just at arm's length, I'd go corded. IIRC, a Canon cord uses the same set of pins as Fuji but for different purposes so a Canon cord will work fine on a Fuji with a Fuji flash but will only work manually with Canon flashes. Not sure if using a Canon flash and cord on a Fuji body can bu99er the camera (or flash!) - anyone know?

The YN603C MkII will work just as well as a cord without the drawbacks. Manual only. Costs about the same as a Canon cord.
If you are desperate to try a cord I have one that I don't use. Still won't transmit for ETTL so manual only. I don't use it because I don't like the restrictions compared to the YN triggers.

The best thing for that lens is a good f*****g brick to the face. Absolute POS.

:D

Love mine... I don't need superfast focus when I'm using it. Mind you, the 60mm is v e r y s l o w in the focus stakes....

Is anybody using the Nisin i60A with their "Air" wireless system?

From what I have read, this allows you to have multiple OCF with TTL, is that right?

I have used the Nissin Air1 system with other Nissin flashes and it works really well.
You just have to keep a eye on battery life as some have had issues with flashes not firing due to low batteries etc.
Once / If Nissin get HSS working I may go down this route.

Cost wise it seems not overly expensive for a couple of flash units, the wireless transceiver and giving you TTL flash. I think this will be my next investment for the system. Need to get to the Photography show to have a look around at what's there...

I'm very surprised Fuji have only released one serious flash (X500) which only uses optical triggering, think they need rethink this area.
RF triggering with a commander unit would be ideal and then two off camera flashes.
£450 for a single EF-X500 seems crazy as you'll need 3 for a 2 off camera system! :(

Once Nissin get HSS working I'll probably go for the Air 1 and 2 i60a and possible the PS8.

I wanna try shoot images outdoors of our collie dog using the Yn560 flashgun, would I simply handhold the flashgun at arm's length..? Any advice appreciated. Can you get a dedicated stand for the Yn560 etc...?

My knowledge of using flashguns is pretty much a big fat Zero!!

Any flash stand will work, your flash shoudl have come with a plastic foot which has a tripod mounting thread in the bottom, so you can use a tripod as a stand if you want. One thing you will want to brush up on is Guide Number (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guide_number) which is the relationship between your flash power and your aperture and working distance. Shutter speed does not come into it for flash only photos, but if you want to balance with daylight then you will need to consider it - since you'll be limited in possible shutter speeds set your daylight portion of exposure up first, so for example with your dog set him up so that your background is exposed as you want then transfer your now fixed aperture into your guide number calculation and set the flash power accordingly. The last bit can be done by trial and error easily enough.

To illustrate what I mean, here is one of my landscapes using flash. I first set the exposure to expose the building and the general background nice and dark, done by chimping it in this case, then I grab the flash, point it where I want to illuminate, I.e the foreground bottom left, and shoot. I just repeated the lat bit until I was happy with the intensity and spread from the flash and called it a day. Obviously the more you do it the easier the latter becomes to guesstimate off hand.

I still use an old YN560, and I'm firing it off the XT-1 using a trigger/receiver set that was cheap-as-chips https://www.amazon.co.uk/Neewer-Wir...&qid=1489236286&sr=8-5&keywords=flash+trigger

Any light stand will hold your YN560, it's no different than any other flash attachment-wise. Just grab a set like this, that includes the stand, flash bracket [attached the flash via hot shoe mount] and a shoot through brolly. When I first wanted to try off-camera flash, I bought a set just like that, and still using it years later. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Neewer-Off...qid=1489236493&sr=1-6&keywords=flash+umbrella

For around £30 you can have that set and triggers and it'll do as good a job as pricier set ups. When shooting outdoors you just want to weigh down the stand or have someone just hold on to it, as they are pretty light and can blow over easily.

Probably my last from Pembrokeshire for a while. The ability of the 18-55 to pull out detail continues to impress me. It's not quite clear in the Flickr version, but at 100% I can make out the sheep on the central headland, and these were far from clear conditions, nor was I focused anywhere near infinity.

Quick snap of my daughter today as my mom wants a more up-to-date picture of her grandkids (son won't let me post his pics on the web any more...). XT1 and 56mm

Nice one Ian. Which lens you used? I want to jump from Canon to fujifilm but at the moment lack of lenses holding me.

This was with the Fuji 56mm. Lovely for head and shoulder portraits. I used to use canons 85/1.2. They have similar properties, I find. Ok the canon on a full frame had less depth of field but the Fuji one isn't bad at throwing backgrounds out of focus. I sold the canon 85 for the 100L macro in the end. I found that more to my liking. And with Fuji I think I also prefer the 90mm to the 56mm 9 times out of 10.

I don't see any reason relating to lenses not to move from canon to Fuji (unless you want specialist stuff like fast long primes or tilt shifts). The problems with Fuji are more with the processing, which some people but not everyone seem to struggle with, or the AF. I am sure the later bodies are better but the xt1 is slower than the best dslrs. Doesn't really affect my style of shooting though so I am perfectly happy.

I wish I had hair :D

I love the photo, great lighting and great looking young lady.

You wouldn't want that hair if you had to wash, comb or cut it. I have more or less the same but keep it cut short to avoid the pain and aggro of looking after it when it gets long.

Nothing special about the lighting, just daylight from behind and above through the skylights in the kitchen. All down the the subject, I figure. Thankfully while she has my hair she has her mom's good looks.

Looks like you have sold me fujifilm or atleast this portrait have sold me this body. I am gona start with x-t1.

I've just revisited this thread after a few hours and I'm updated with quite a few new images........stunning work ALL......wOOOw

Spent the past fifteen minutes updating the Fuji firmware on my X body and XF lenses.

I have both FF and Cropped ( 5d2 ) and ( 1D3 ) + the XT-1

The Fuji produces stunning results, better I think than both the Canons. Of the two Canons I prefer the cropped results from the 1d3, there's something I can't put my finger on.

Hopefully I'll get time to have a look at my XT-2 this week some time.

I've processed some of the images from the 25mm lens. It's really nice for portraits - sharp in the centre, good pop and easy to work with. It looks great on the camera too! Soft at the corners and vignetting wide open, but for the proce (I got it for £64 delivered) it's a steal!

Sample image, probably f4 or 5.6

had a lot of fun with the camera today. its starting to come back to me! took me a while to work out eye focus can only be used on single rather than continuous focus. :fuji:

Apparently the XT-20 can use Eye-AF in continuous but I'm not sure if that's true or not.
If so I'm expecting Fuji to enable it on the XT-2 via a firmware upgrade.
It's useable but no way as good as the Sony A7RII's Eye-AF abilities, hopefully Fuji improve it as it's one of the very few things I miss about the A7RII :)
