I thought I would try the 52 Week Challenge for the first time, inspired by all the good work I have seen. I think it's a great way to compliment your hobby and give a bit of focus to it (no pun intended) I'll see how far I get with it, so fingers crossed. It will be a journey where I learn a lot.

I'll be using both my Nikon D7000 and also a little Fuji X10 which I carry with me at all times. I will endeavour to go as far as I go with this but at some point I anticipate being sent back to sea.

Please feel free to critique and comment.

Many thanks,

Nick

Week 1 - Direction

For this first weeks theme I have chosen a navigational instrument that measures direction from a known point of reference and also indicates the four cardinal points. I wanted to put this into context with other navigational aids and included a plotter / divider on an aeronautical chart (CAA UK Chart 1:500,000 Scale)

I wanted to get the maximum depth of field possible and chose a small aperture.

Stats:
NIKON D7000. F-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED.
IS 200. F36 / 30s

I post this one up for interest but this was my second choice. I'm still not sure about the composition personally prefer the former image.

I think i agree with you the first shot is definitely a better composition. Its good to see the way people use the same subject on the theme but in a way that is personal to them (y)

I like the comp on the first one, but like how you can see the map in the 2nd. I think the first pic would look even better with a higher viewing angle? That way you have the comp and can see the map better; or maybe it's the section of map in the first pic that you can see? Am I making sense?

I like them both Nick but I think #1 just shades it for me. I prefer the colours in this one. I dont know if its because the red lanyard on the compass in #1 is more vivid. Good start to the 52 and good luck. Iain

I like them both but prefer no1, I think the portrait style and also the direction that the needle points leads your eye into the picture.

Well done and I look forward to seeing your next 51!!

Wonderful start Nick and right up my street being an aeronautical map (y) I look forward to seeing your results through the challenge (y) the only thing I'm not sure about is it just don't seem right to north at the bottom of the image to my mind you should have taken it with north facing to the north of the image if that makes sense, but I love the idea  and reminds me I need to sort out my POTY entry soon :D

Matt

My preference is for #1. I like the angle of the compass in the shot although felt it a little tight to the frame. I never realised how busy aeronautical maps are. There's an awful lot of information on them.

really good take on the theme, No1 for me the angle works well and the lanyard on the compass leads in very nicely

Many thanks Phil, Joe, AngentG, Sarah, Mat, Peter, steve and Michael for your comments and support. Week 2 is a little more challenging !

Hi ya

great start for your project....prefer the 1st version though not really sure why...I'm sure it's someting to do with that old chesnut...Composition
Like the focus on the compass , the colors & the angle..good work mister...look forward to seeing your next 51 weeks (y)

ps...Don't forget to update the spreadsheet...link in 1st post where the themes are listed....makes life so much easier for seeing who's done what...I've updated wk 1 for you (y)

Thank you for your positive comments. Hopefully i have managed to kink this to the spreadsheet this week !

Week 2 - Fear !

A difficult and potentially dark subject to tackle this week.

I went to Critch Stand, near Matlock in Derbyshire today and took this image from the top of the Memorial Tower. The Tower is 300 meters above sea level and on a good day from there eight counties can be seen, including landmarks such as the Humber Bridge and Lincoln Cathedra,l although today was quite overcast and the lighting flat.

You can read more about the memorial tower here:-

http://www.crich-memorial.org.uk/

Anyway back to this week's image. I don't mind heights or flying but the 'fear of falling' and subsequent impact is less than appealing. I would suggest that the chances of surviving a fall from the top of this tower is extremely remote and the spiked railings add risk of impalement and constitute a further hazard !

So on the theme of 'fear' which in this case is intrinsically linked to mortality, I made sure that my camera was firmly secured to my wrist and reached out with both hands as far as I could, my upper body being supported by the parapet. I wanted to give my image a dark feel to it and chose monochrome. I used selective colouring to highlight the tower and also the top of the bronze cross and here's the result :-

I have also put up a couple of other images from today on my Flicr account.

As ever all comments welcome and roll on next weeks theme ! (y)

Many thanks,

Nick

2 great images for the first 2 weeks Nick

Wk 1 - prefer 1st pic... the more acute angle swings it for me :)
Wk 2 - Nice shot again, good deep dof, and I like the way you took the pic with your arms out, helps emphasize the height

Good luck with the rest of your 52... look forward to seeing what you do (y)

I hate heights :shake: good shot and bang on theme, look forward to the next 50 :)

 Once again, just processed my Fear and you beat me to it :bat:

:D

B&w works well as does the composition; or have you just desaturated it - I think I can see a bit of blue in the, is it a cross

Cheers.

Hi I like them both and they are bob on for the themes I like the aviation charts in place of the map and the selective colour on the tower.

I look forward to more of your work

Nick, great take on the fear theme, i have a real fear of heights and when i scrolled down to this image my stomach turned.

great work, look forward to seeing the next 50.

Hi Nick.....

Yup..hits the theme for me..had a similar idea but failed miserably to find somwhwre suitable so well done you (y)

Does make my stomach flip a little...very hard landing there ! Nice conversion, bit of SC works well

Well done you for getting up there & taking the shot (y)

Michael, Dan, Dark Knight, Andrew,Andy, Amanda, Marshall, Lynne, Daniel and Penguin,

Thank you very much for your comments. I would like to have been more symmetrical in my composition but the fact is that I was shooting blind (arms outstretched) and there was also a pillar in the way which inhibited this. Here is a photograph of the Memorial Tower (showing the pillars) from the bottom. I took the shot just from above the cross.

If you get that stomach churning feeling then I have achieved my objective. It is widely excepted that photography is an art form, and art can be controversial........ !

Like your first version for direction, nice composition, lighting and colour.

Also like week 2, a unusual view and one that is spot on theme not sure I would of hung my gear out like that.

Look forward to week 3 :)

Well interpreted, my eye would have liked to see it more symmetrical but I guess at that height you just get on and take it :D

Hi Nick, the last image looks over sharpened on my monitor, just wondered if it does to anyone else?

Direction... it works and fits the theme well, the second shot appears sharper (probably diffraction softening on the first), but in this case I rather like the effect.. I didn't read the text first, and was wondering if that was an aviation map :D...

Fear, Fits perfectly. I like it, but wonder if it doesn't need a bit of a boost in exposure/brightness and contrast to.. the ground seems quite dark on my monitor
