    rugby

Whilst I agree with Gary generally, there are a few occasions when a photo of the back of the ball carrier shouldn't be binned. The main focus of the image doesn't necessarily have to be on the ball carrier, but on the tackler(s) instead. I think that 1 and possibly 5 applies from your set.

Rugby/ Football Capture: Framing vs. Cropping

    Local Rugby Wimborne III

Auto ISO is useless for floodlit evening matches. The exposures look terrible, far better to shoot manual under lights.

    Wimborne RFC v Trowbridge RFC

Great variety of shots in your gallery, that's the beauty of union, and they're edited down fairly well. I'm always offering this advice so it's probably getting a bit repetitive but you should try crouching down or even sitting down. The lower viewpoint (looking slightly up at players rather...

    A bit'o'rugger

    1. Sadly no ball in frame so doesn't really work IMO 2. The back of a player isn't really much good, unless the eye is drawn to the tackler(s), which I'm not sure is the case here as it's all a bit messy. 3 and 4 are really good though, but I'd suggest you crouch/sit and to get closer to...

More of this weeks Amateure RL

Lightroom is excellent, an all in one package, though a lot of snappers use Photo Mechanic instead as it's probably better for captioning. Make sure you check out John Kirkpatrick's excellent 'auto copy' utility: http://www.tilebarn.com/lightroom/index.php - Let's you lock your best pics in...

    D300 Auto ISO

Yeah auto ISO is great. Don't use it for floodlit matches though, much better to go manual unless the light is extremely uneven, but even then I wouldn't. For those only having the option of using it with a slow shutter speed, it might be a good idea to check you're using the latest firmware...

First attempt at sport photography - local Rugby Union

Good first attempt. I like 3 and 4. Number 5 is probably the weakest though. I assume it's a try's just been scored but you wouldn't know because it just looks like he's lying on the ground. It's not easy obviously but try and get a shot of a try being scored, rather than the player flopped on...

    Local Rugby

Much better crop from Andy, your eyes get lost in the original version, we don't need to see the guy's back to the camera on the left for instance.

    Local Rugby

Last two are pretty good but I'd suggest you might want to have a rethink about the cropping in the first two. The first is a bit unbalanced with the players' feet cut off and so much empty space at the top. Second also needs a rethink. IMO

What sports are YOU shooting this weekend?

Nice one. I loved shooting the Super 15 match at Twickenham a couple of seasons back, fantastic rugby, wish they'd bring another match up here sometime

    Much improved Lightroom workflow

Tried the auto copy app at the weekend. My life is now complete, it's that good. Huge time saver, thanks again for the heads up Andy

    Another Army v Navy set

Some shots from Saturday's wet and windy afternoon. As usual with Twickenham I find it's quite a good idea to sit on the sidelines if you're using Nikon and don't have the benefit of Canon's extra 1.6 crop factor. I just find behind the posts the action is usually miles away and with only a...
