    Cobra, Rest in Peace

Photography is not a big interest for me now but it was. I was here at the start and a mod for many years. Going through this thread it was good to see many familiar names still here. Cobra was always a big character on the forum and I can only echo previous posts saying how much he will be...

Notice Some big changes coming to TP

My first post here for 7 years now. I was here at the start and spent a long time as a moderator. Marcel has always been the powerhouse behind TP and I'm amazed he has kept it up for so long. If Marcel has a weakness it's that he is too nice and does too much. I've recently been lurking in the...

    Thankyou RobertP

Just found this :) I'm not dead merely resting... and just back from holiday. We have had building work going on this year and my forum time was limited to a quick look in the staffroom and not much else plus as others have found sometimes photography isn't first on the list when you do have...

Help with this laptop fault please

I searched this problem a bit when I first saw this post. I've not touched raid in years so not fully understanding the problem I gave up without replying. I did see some stuff about this version of the intel raid software (don't know if its bios update or what) and suggestions that it loses...

    Windows 7 and windows 8

It may just be a kaspersky thing but every new PC I've installed it on blocks networking just as described above. PC is visible and has shares enabled but connecting from another PC on the network gets no permission contact administrator etc. message... until firewall settings in kaspersky are...

    Windows 7 and windows 8

Sounds like firewall settings to me. I get the same sort of windows messages with Kaspersky until I change the local network to 'trusted'. You could briefly turn off the firewall on the PC that you can't connect to (or both PC's) and see if it works.

    Problems with laptop?

Make a bootable CD or USB flash drive and check the bios is set to boot from CD or USB before the hard drive. The CD or USB stick could have a linux stand alone version on it or just a basic dos. If it always boots fine to the media their may be something flakey with the windows install...

    Problems with laptop?

Sounds like a physical problem to me. Something not seated properly/dodgy internal cable or plug. Could be the CPU fan starting sluggish and the bios protecting the PC by not starting up. As you've seen a memory error report maybe try removing and reseating the memory. I recently fixed a...

Drivers help after 'refresh your PC'

Is this a branded PC? If so check out the makers web site. they should have all drivers available to download. Install them all. You can create a restore point as often as you like to be able to undo changes (google it if you don't know how). Guess it is how you used to use windows 7 but to me...

    Concatenate Folder Names

I've used bulkrename a few times for some fairly complicated renaming jobs (its free). Never tried what you want to do but it might have options for it - http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php

    Touchscreen laptops

I use my ultrabook on my lap most of the time. Touching the screen is easier than using the keyboard and pretty much at the same distance. Arm position is more relaxed than elbows back to get hands on the keyboard. You don't use a tablet flat on your lap. The angled screen on the ultrabook is...

    Touchscreen laptops

I have a touch screen ultrabook and use the touch all the time. It has become natural to select scroll and zoom etc by touching the screen. So natural I get the urge to reach out sitting at the PC but haven't touched the monitor yet :) . Thing about Window 8 is it is 2 operating systems in one...

Home Cinema / Media Streaming Discussion

Plex is something else I've not looked at. As it is 'closed source' is it still free or do you buy it? Couldn't see prices from a brief look at the web site so I'm assuming its free. Not downloaded anything yet.

    Automatic Back up

^ is exactly what I do too. When I upgraded the hdd in my wifes laptop I booted it from a USB stick prepared on the server and restored to the new drive over ethernet to test out the backup. Worked perfectly even if it did take 3 hours or so. Can't say I've seen HP microservers on sale anywhere...
