Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

And the 7d2, don't know why it's not been added, can't be much of a problem to do it. Thanks Bob!
Politics, I would say. They want at least one feature left, which makes you longing for the 5D Mark IV. :(

Is anyone using either the Canon 35mm F1.4L or Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art on their 5dmk3? I am interested to know your thoughts of how they compare and which one you would look at if you had to choose now.

I'd choose the sigma. Better quality for the price

Anyone have any clue why the shutter noise from one 5D body to another would be completely different?

One giving a very tinny sound, the other a very clunky mechanical sound - same firmware, both new, same settings??

I have 5d mkiii and I am more than satisfied with its performance, my only gripe is that decent lenses cost serious money. I just bought a Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 SP Di VC USD Lens.

At the moment no one knows for sure which currently available L series lenses give the best quality and performance on the new Canon 5DS and 5D SR. only testing will tell.

So until people know stick with what you have got until we know for sure.

Initial tests are showing resolution improvements on lenses that aren't exactly regarded as top notch with significant improvements of up to 30% on better lenses.

5Ds or 5Dr are mainly for studio use and if you have to produce very large prints. For that purpose these cameras will produce better results with every lens attached.

I will not downgrade from 5DIII to 5Ds/r ;)

Well having a 1.3 & 1.6 crop and similar AF systems to 5D3 etc suggests Canon see other uses for the camera also.

Yes... Boosting their profits and convincing us we need the next best thing. Love my 5D3!

I can finally join this thread! Bought one a week ago and what a cracking camera!

Well i'm interested in buying one if I decide to sell my 7D MkII. Can't really see the point of buying another 5D3 when this is available now.

Don't forget that the new models are 'iso-inferior' when compared to the 5D3 although maybe not an issue for your usage.

Will wait for some decent reviews on the camera Bob. Really only need high ISO for night photography and my 1DX can do that for me. Its just another option to consider but several months away at least and maybe something else will come along in the meantime that is more attractive.

Indeed, Gaz. Personaly I'd like to see an offering in the other direction....a less densely packed sensor (10-12Mp?) which, when allied to today's noise handling technology, could produce something far above the 1Dx in terms of 'dark scene' reproduction.

Bob

I would like to see that also Bob. I would have preferred the 7DMkII to be a 14-16 MP sensor. But it isnt so will see what the next offering is.

Ooo yes!
First test shots with my 100-400 II indicate it works spectacularly well on the 5DIII.
Coming up soon I'm covering a festival followed by a trip to Skomer Island - can't wait to see the results!

Hand-held, widest aperture, focussed on the eye
241mm, 1/160s, f5.0, ISO 100

Crop of the above - strewth this is a sharp lens!

A quick go at close focussing - also hand-held.
400mm, 1/160s, f5.6, ISO 320 - looks like the IS works !!!!!!!

Looks a cracker of a lens there Duncan!

Got to say I am absolutely loving my MK3! IQ, noise performance, AF system and tweak ability! What a camera. Makes mincemeat of my 7dmk1 as well. Just need to get myself a good wide lens now to complete my collection as thats the area of my lineup I am lacking in, line up as follows -

24-105L
70-200L
300 F4L
100 Macro

So a wide for landscapes would be really useful. What are peoples thoughts? Back when I had my 5dmk1 I had the 17-40. Is this still a good lens? That may sound like a silly question but new lenses have come out since then such as 16-35 f4 L etc.......

@antc I have the 300 f4, same as you - I'll probably be selling it soon :)
This is my first properly long lens and I've been lusting after it for a while.

As for wider lenses....
24mm is a darned good focal length and the 24-105 is a good lens.
There's a reason ultra-wide lenses are a bit specialist - they aren't for everyone.
The classic Canon ultra-wide lenses are rectilinear and stretch the corners producing a distinctive look, and I'm not a fan. Although some subjects work well (e.g. architecture), as soon as anything recognisable appears in the corners they often look uncomfortably odd (especially people in crowds). I've seen a way too many cracking landscape shots that the stretched corners irritate the heck out of me.
Learn to embrace the 24mm focal length :)

I do have a wider lens - the 8-15mm fisheye. I use it a lot at 15mm where it has 180 deg coverage corner to corner.
Superb for capturing the whole scene when isolating part of it just isn't going to work; it's also my main lens for cave photography where getting far enough away from the subject is a real problem.
It's still an ultra-wide, so all the problems of keeping the camera level to avoid crazy perspective still apply.
But at least I get the choice to go with the composition at the time I took the shot, or de-fish the images. I only de-fish occasionally and far less than I would have predicted before getting the lens.

Ordered a 5Diii yesterday, can't wait [emoji322]Coming from a 7D, will be really interested to see the differences.

Wait for the 5d4
How long? I guess it will not be available this year, maybe in the middle of 2016.

I wouldn't change my 5DIII to a 5DsR for free. In my opinion that 50 MP are simply pointless.

Regarding the 1DX the 5DIII is the second best DSLR Canon has currently to offer.

That was sort of my thought on the 50mp. I thought it was just me!!! I went from 7Di to 5Dii and the difference was well worth it. Almost as soon as I had the ii I was wishing I'd gone the whole hog and gone for the 5Diii. I'd be interested to see what the 5D4 spec would be, but I'm guessing I will have sold my 7D and got a iii by then. I can keep the ii and iii then as I like to minimise changing lenses

Yea id wait till then. Or get a Sony a7r2 and call it a day

Apart from replacing the lush lens collection I've built up over the years, and replace the second body at the same time.
Keeping my fingers crossed the 5D4 is going to be something special.
You can use your existing lenses on the a7r2 and It looks like it can now af as fast as Sony native lenses.

seeing no one has answered this i'll have a stab at it. Is one not in silent mode.

The 5D3 is very silent in silent mode. I always work with that, except I need a fast frame rate, which is very very rare.

But I agree in fast mode it's loud, I thought it's damaged when I did the very first picture.

By the way, this is the result of pressing the shutter button the very first time on my 5D3 :D
