TBH I won’t shoot at smaller than f8 for birds. I know f8 lenses would be heavier and more expensive but would the be ‘that’ much heavier?About the new f11 lenses. I love the lightweight aspect (and the price) and as an old guy with arthritis that's a big thing for me, but I only venture away from my Fuji for birds and I'm pretty sure f11 isn't going to be that useful for me. What say you guys?

Yeah f8 would need to let twice the amount of light in so probably the size difference would be sizeable. Mind you, the only lens I manage now is the 400mm f5.6 with a 1.4tc and f11 seems a stop too far. Not sure where that leaves me
Shoot higher ISO or use the lens combo you have on the R5.
Actually, f11 should be do-able. Just as bit more than I'm used to using.
F11’s probably do-able if you didn’t live in the UKActually, f11 should be do-able. Just as bit more than I'm used to using.
Whats your current canon?
LOL Even in the sunny south - east. Not bad today but I'm always envious or our American and mediterranean friends.F11’s probably do-able if you didn’t live in the UK
I am interested to know how the IBIS gets on with non IS lenses such as the 400mm f/5.6L USM, plus does it work in conjunction with third party lenses that have IS such as my 150-600mm Sigma Sport.
To answer my own question Gordon Laing says approx 4 stops on a EF 85mm so I am expecting 3 on a telephoto. Decent video if you are only interested in stills.
As a completely stills photographer I don't really care, but at the same time, I'm also kind of interested in this overheating video thing. I read this in Dpreview:
"With the exception of specialist video models, most cameras that shoot 4K are prone to overheating, regardless of the brand. Some companies let you extend the recording time by ignoring overheat warnings (and risk ‘low-temperature burns’ if you handhold the camera), while others simply stop when they get too hot. This should make it clear that shooting 4K for an extended period is difficult. For instance, Sony says the a7 III will shoot around 29 minutes of 4K video with the temperature warnings set to ‘Std,’ while the Fujifilm X-T4 promises 30 minutes of 4K/30 and 20 minutes of 4K/60........
The fact that the EOS R5 can shoot two hours of 4K/30p footage (in line-skipping mode) when sitting in direct sunshine suggests it’s pretty good at dissipating heat. But it seems trying to do so with 1.7x more data than the a7 III and X-T4 is a step too far: it’ll match them for promised recording duration but only just. This leaves it much more sensitive to any other use when not recording."
He also points out the R6 doesn't cool down as effectively as the R5.
I'm not 100% sure if he's saying the R5 and R6 are the same as every other camera in this regard or not? Is Canon being overcautious ( maybe mindful of the ...... ermmmm .... heat, Sony got for high temperatures a couple of years ago ) by shutting it down whereas others let it go?
It doesn't seem any worse than others including Fuji ( I say this as a fanboy of Fuji BTW )
Well my neighbour has taken delivery of my wine and my rf 70-200 while I'm away. Something to look forward to when coming back home.View attachment 288618
Party at hisClearly they don't know gear, you could buy a fair lot of cases for the price of that lens
People are jumping all over the overheat warning like it's a huge thing, it's not, all brands have done it over the years and it's well recorded in the manuals of each camera. Do yourself a favour and search any milc that records 4k and add the term overheat. It's just the big YouTube hit at the moment because F all else is getting hits for those guys... Besides the reason they are leaving YouTube and joining twitch to make more money.
TBH I just wish a manufacturer would bring out a stills only line, allowing us that don't shoot video to have a camera without paying for features we don't needPeople are jumping all over the overheat warning like it's a huge thing, it's not, all brands have done it over the years and it's well recorded in the manuals of each camera. Thats a bit of a fanboy statement if I’ve ever seen one.[emoji23]
The reason it’s getting so much press is the fact that they touted this 8k video market leader camera.( Non cine cams)
most of and all the leading marketing was on video and how this would re take the crown in the video market like the 5d2.
When in fact if you want it to not over heat you have to shoot 4K/30 which by all reviews is soft compared to most of the older cameras.
Then the fact it over heats when shooting stills and in any mode takes longer than your shot to cool down and only lets you re shoot a few minutes kind of makes these killer stats only that... stats.
They didn’t cripple this camera specs this time, just cropped it in actual performance. For a £4K camera people expected better.
It’s not being blown out of hand when it’s actually happened to EVERY user that has reviewed it, had it happened to one or two then yes is would have been over blown.
Had they advertised this as the leading stills camera that could shoot 4K(no one actually needs 8k, or has the computer’s to even render it easily) then it wouldn’t be getting the stick it’s getting.
I bet bar video this is going to be classed. As a leading camera, but the video side might have cost it notion of going down as a classic like the d700/ 5dmk2.. even though they did both have issues.
That's impressive (maybe not the horses arse though).Received my r5 last Friday... taken it out a few times and super impressed with it.
AF Tracking - So far the animal tracking has worked on Bee's, birds and a horses arse.

No, the Sonys never got anywhere near as much attention when they were all overheating when 4k first became a thing and like I said, pretty much all the brands overheat when shooting 4k.
So are you saying its not the market leader for 8k in a non cine cam? Or are there other 8k FF MILC non cine cams on the market? 8K is not for average Joe they are targeting the top end and pushing technology.
It gets hot and overheats, thats been acknowledged by Canon and the recording limits are provided in the manual and its not been touted as a dedicated video camera.
It's not just allowing you to go low on the ss for stills, I've found ibis really beneficial for using old lenses, 200F4 vintage for example, really steadies your composition. I don't shoot all that much at longer ss but I still appreciate ibis a heck of a lot for times like this. Even using an 85mm on apsc, which I am at the moment, composing the shot is so much smoother.
If you want to be pedantic then yes it is the market leader in 8k FF MILC as it’s the only one that offers it.. but is it just really a headline grabbing detail.. YES
Is it actually of use to shoot anything proper ..no.
The over heating means no one in There right mind would use the 8k in any professional manner.
No one will Use it for weddings, advertising or small productions if it craps the bed in under 30min and can’t be used for another 30.
Having this functionality is only worth while if it actually works properly and can be used properly.
The Sony’s and others might shut down if hot but they don’t take ages to re start and then become able to only shoot 5-10% of the original time limit.
Everyone isn’t just pointing this out to hate on canon as you seem to think, even the canon users and ambassadors pointed this out as a major issue.
I’m not pointing this out as a Sony user, if more people bar the two that have said so find the a7s3 over heats a lot I will flame that also as it is advised as a video centric camera.
I said before had canon said this is the best stills camera and can if you really want do video but has this issue then people wouldn’t be so bothered, why do you think the R6 isn’t getting flamed about it’s over heating as much.
Here's another camera "overheating" issue

We seem to expect to be able to shoot "Lawrence of Arabia" on an iPhone these days

Pretty much what I said in the post before.
Great stills, rubbish vid ,marketed wrong
And this is what bugs me, alluding to my earlier post. Pure still photographers like myself are forced to pay for features we don't want (i.e. video), and then to rub salt into the wounds these features 'appear' to be half-bakedView: https://youtu.be/qDXPiu3wpBs

Surely there's a market for stills only isn't there?
No, but as a stills tog you're still paying for features you don't needIt's a brand new Canon camera. Even with stills only it wouldnt be a cheap camera.

I think it would be a lot cheaper if it just stills focusedIt's a brand new Canon camera. Even with stills only it wouldnt be a cheap camera.
Yeah I know they know the market better than myself, but I can't help think that there'd be plenty enough folk that would appreciate a stills only line, especially if they were 2/3 price for example. A Stills only R5 at £3k would be much more appealing and affordable than the 'hybrid' R5. Likewise my A7RIV, I gladly sacrifice the video if the camera was £500 or so cheaper. They would be limiting their customer base in a declining market.
