F1 2017 season

Being a cheapskate (and having told Sky to do one a couple of months ago!), I'll be watching the so called highlights. Actually, I'm not that much of a cheapskate, I just refuse to pay extra to watch advertisements and let's face it, modern F1 is simply a mobile set of advertising hoardings!

I turned the alarm off and have watched the recording instead, sky are definitely getting their money's worth with pat symonds, he's good though, I enjoyed the bit with ted.

All motorsport is! My Sky is being switched off today so I'm in the same boat. However moving to BT means I will at least be able to watch the IndyCars live.

Well, that was boring really. How many overtakes or even attempts to overtake were there in the whole race?

Honda has revealed that it has held talks with other F1 teams over a possible supply of engines, but insists that nothing has been agreed. (Motorsport) (BBC news app)

Haha, nobody will touch that engine with a barge pole

Yep, boring as get out!

Need to get far more overtaking and these new cars make it even worse!

Can any one tell me why Lewis got a bad reception on the podium???

I didn't notice, I think I got up and went for a walk after the paint finished drying ;)

These cars are going to make for a boring year if we compare Aus 2016 to Aus 2017...

Because he's not Australian and their driver was crap over the weekend.

I also noticed the booing.....

TBH, I do like Lewis, but not after 20 or so laps (before the half way point), I was getting fed up of his whining!

Not fair really. Australia is always a circuit that's hard to overtake on.

I did wonder why too. Anyway boring race thought there was more mid pack over taking last year.

On the sky note. We sacked all their services off and did wonder what I was going to do. But in the final week we had a email offering us everything for 35pm for 12 months happy days.

Ive searched the web and it seems there are 100's of theories why Lewis was booed , none really making sense, the overriding opinion seems to be down to drunk aussie retards

Will be interesting to see what happens when they get to a circuit where it was claimed that DRS makes overtaking too easy.

The cars really look like they mean it this year, and the difference in cornering speed is very noticeable. Given that it is now a downforce formula again rather than an engine formula , I was surprised at the lack of performance of the Red Bulls, but very pleased with the result, which suggests we will have a contest between manufacturers this year for the first time in the hybrid era.

Max Verstappin reported he could fell the turbulence 2s away from Kimi so getting close in drs range as you say may be interesting
To the non fan the speed wasnt noticeable on TV, to the fan it was and then the straights came
Next year they may listen to Ross and go for mechanical grip at the expense of aero
Still the season has to unfold and IF Ferrari can maintain its flying start and Adrian Newey has scribbled new upgrades then maybe Mercedes is in for a rough time
Bottas is doing a good job but the spectre of a number 2 is still there
Felt it for Hass

Well that was a dire race by any standards street circuit or not!
I do hope it's not a sign of things to come.

Saw the shark fin off the F1 car and it improves the look no end Lower the rear wing and decrease the size of the front wing or is that looking for mechanical grip?

Facts from the previous race
Faster cars, more durable tyres – and an aborted start – produced the shortest Australian Grand Prix ever seen at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit.

Sebastian Vettel took just one hour, 24 minutes and 11.672 seconds to win the race, trimming 4.085 seconds off the previous shortest race, held in 2004. But he was helped by the fact this year’s race was shortened by one lap after the first attempt to start it was abandoned.

So this wasn’t the fastest race ever seen at Albert Park. That remains the 2004 race, run over the full 58 laps and won by Michael Schumacher at an average speed of 219.010kph in his Ferrari F2004.

Vettel averaged 215.408kph over his 57 laps, making this the third-quickest Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne. The 2007 race, won by Kimi Raikkonen at an average speed of 215.893kph, was also quicker.

It was also the first time since 2013 this race has run Safety Car-free, as the record-setting 2004 race also was.

Lewis Hamilton started the Australian Grand Prix from pole position for the sixth time, tying Ayrton Senna’s record. It was also his and Mercedes fourth in a row at this track.

However Vettel came through to win for Ferrari on Sunday, raising the prospect of a much closer championship fight this year than in recent seasons. This was only the ninth time Mercedes have been defeated in the 60 races since the V6 hybrid turbo engine formula was introduced, and the first time anyone other than them or one of their drivers has led the constructors or drivers championships for almost three years.

Formula One’s most successful team took their 225th victory a year and a half since their last one. The sports next most prolific winners, McLaren, don’t look like adding to their 182 wins any time soon.

Vettel is the fourth-highest driver on the all-time winners list with 43. He needs eight more to catch third-placed Alain Prost.

The race winner also made a late bid to claim fastest lap. He wasn’t the only driver hunting for fastest lap, however – both Max Verstappen and Daniil Kvyat were trying to take it, but it went to serial fastest lap collector Kimi Raikkonen. He now has 44 which is more than any driver in F1 history bar Schumacher, who has a whopping 77.

Hamilton headed the field in the opening laps which was the 100th time he’d led a grand prix. He is the second driver to reach a century of races in the lead, having started 189 races. This is another tally led by Schumacher, who led 142 of the 306 races he started.

His new team mate Valtteri Bottas reached the podium on his debut for Mercedes. It’s the tenth time Bottas has appeared on the rostrum, the others all having come at Williams.

For the third year running only one Red Bull started the race from the grid. Daniel Ricciardo was stuck in the pits when the race began, while in the two previous years Daniil Kvyat hit trouble before the start was given. Ricciardo’s troubles meant he failed to extend his run of 17 consecutive points finishes.

Kvyat did get to start the race this time and made it to the chequered flag. His record in Melbourne therefore stands at two ‘Did Not Starts’ for Red Bull and two ninth places for Toro Rosso. His 58th race start also meant he surpassed Vitaly Petrov as Formula One’s most experienced Russian driver. The pair are the only Russians ever to race in F1.

Sixth place for Romain Grosjean in the race twelve months ago was a stunning debut performance for Haas. This time Grosjean took sixth in qualifying, giving them their highest grid position to date. However they were the only team not to get either of their cars to the chequered flag in the race.

Finally, Esteban Ocon scored his first point on his debut for Force India. He is the 334th driver in F1 history to join the points-scorers, though of course there are many drivers who previously finished in sixth to tenth positions but did not score because a different points system was used.

I used to be an avid F1 follower including travelling to the odd race but I will be honest the new season still hasnt grabbed me yet, I dont know why but I am still finding it a tad 'boring' but cant put my finger on why, maybe its still the Merc dominance, maybe the lack of real 'characters' but still isnt doing it for me and thats even with my now UHD viewing on Sky Q which I had hoped would give me a bit more enthusiasm for watching.

I just can't seem to get excited about it anymore. I only watched the highlights and even got lost interest just watching those :(

Pretty much the same here - was gutted when I heard Sky had bought all the rights and it wasn't going to be free to air anymore from 2018, but for the end of last season and the 2 races so far, really don't think I'm going to miss it - which I never thought I'd say having followed it and been a fan for years...

I know what you mean. I used to follow it in South Africa but SABC (similar to BBC) dropped it more than 10 years ago because it was too expensive. DSTV (like Sky) picked it up but we couldn't afford that, so no more F1 for me. Thought I'd miss it, but never gave it another thought. We don't have TV now, and the most I do is glance at the results in online news.

Those who are fed up with f1 are welcome at the new church of Indycar.

I've been watching IndyCar, and prior to that CART/Champ Car since 1990 and the days of ScreenSport. It's a pale imitation of its 1990s golden era, but still worth a watch. Despite the ugly Dallara chassis.

Have you seen the renders for next year? Much better.
