F1 season 2016

And that twit Jordan going on about the nice city and lovely people, it's supposed to be about racing not a paid jolly for the presenters. Give them a long straight and a push to pass button doesn't make for exciting racing. With the length of the straight they shouldn't need DRS as there's enough clean air for two cars and they can fight on merit.

Was this race "boring" because Lewis didn't win, because there were plenty of overtaking opportunities and people were taking advantage of them. I thought it was a good race, because the circuit was tight, the speeds incredibly high on the long straights, and the tyre choices quite complex.

It was boring because there was no uncertainty in the slipstreaming overtakes, no dicing for the lead, no super starts from Ferrari and so "tight" that there was not even one safety car to bunch them up!

No uncertainty in slipstream overtakes was down to DRS and the length of the straight, this is what you get with artificial aids to overtaking
Super starts were muted, in the warm up races the yellow flag was waved in the first sector with no track incident so that there were no pile ups in the first sector F1 drivers learnt from this
A safety cars are not what good racing is about, crashes overruns etc are best left to demolition derbys In the end the fact there was no safety cars is a tribute to the drivers skill
No the race wasnt as exciting as the last 4 but a lot of mid field action was good and lets be fair a force india on the podium in front of red bull and a ferrari was quite unexpected
The change in the tyre rule is the one genuine factor that has mixed up the bunch

Certainly a tribute to the drivers skills also a kick in the teeth to all the strategy folk in the teams and ultimately no chance to see closer racing!

As for the yellows deployed in sector1 in the F1 race, it wasn't quite as bad as the prolonged safety car start at Monaco but deprived us of exciting racing.

It was a pretty boring race imo.
But....is it Nico's turn for the championship?
He's never been one of those outstanding drivers imo, a good driver none the less but he is no Vettel, Alonso, Button or Hamilton.

Sometimes miracles happen... Maldonado has a race win for example but I think he will throw it away, he will have his share of unreliability at some point and once Lewis gets infront on points, I think Nico will accept it, he is #2 at Mercedes even if toto doesn't say it

Facts From Previous Race

Williams reached record levels of performance for speed on the track and in the pits during the European Grand Prix weekend.

Felipe Massa was stationary for just 1.92 seconds while Williams changed all four of his tyres during Sunday’s race. This equals the record for the quickest pit stop of all time, set by Red Bull in the 2013 United States Grand Prix.

The combination of Mercedes power, Williams’ efficient chassis and the longest flat-out section on an F1 circuit produced unofficially the highest speed ever seen during an official F1 session. Valtteri Bottas clocked 378kph (234.9mph) during qualifying.

This was well in excess of the estimated top speed of 340kph before F1 arrived at the track. However Hermann Tilke’s lap time prediction was impressively accurate. A time of 1’42.37 was forecast and Nico Rosberg duly produced a 1’42.520 in Q2.

Rosberg took pole position, the 25th of his career, which meant thrice-champions Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet lost their places in the top ten most prolific pole-sitters.

He should have been joined on the front row by Sergio Perez. The Force India driver qualified second but a gearbox change penalty left him seventh.

That meant Force India missed out on their first front row start since the 2009 season. The team’s only front row appearances to date came that year, courtesy of Giancarlo Fisichella’s pole position at Spa-Francorchamps and Adrian Sutil’s second place at Monza.

Rosberg took pole by 0.995 seconds, which was Mercedes’ largest advantage over their rivals in a qualifying session since the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, when they were 1.391s ahead.

He used that advantage to the maximum in the race, leading every lap and setting the fastest lap on his way to victory from pole. This was the second ‘grand slam’ of his career: his first came in Russia earlier this year. He is the only driver to have taken more than one ‘grand slam’ without winning the championship.

It was also the 18th fastest lap of Rosberg’s career, putting him level with David Coulthard. Mercedes’ 52nd win means they are now on their own as the fifth most successful constructor of all time in terms of wins, one ahead of Red Bull.

It was another frustrating grand prix for Daniel Ricciardo, however, as he finished lower than he started for the sixth race in a row.

Sergio Perez took his second podium finish of the year and the fifth for Force India. As with his previous two podium appearances, it was for third place having started seventh on the grid.

More significantly he also equalled the record for most podiums by a Mexican driver, tying with Pedro Rodriguez on seven. However Rodriguez took two victories: at Kyalami in 1967 and Spa-Francorchamps in 1970.

Azerbaijan arrived on the F1 calendar as the 32nd different country to hold a race. It joins Britain, Germany and Spain as hosts of the European Grand Prix.

The Baku City Circuit is the 72nd different track to host a world championship round and the sixth track to hold the European Grand Prix after Brands Hatch, the Nurburgring, Donington Park, Jerez and Valencia.

Azerbaijan has never had a driver in Formula One and nor will there be in the near future as there are no Azerbaijani racers who have any FIA Formula One superlicence points. The same is also true of two other current F1 hosts: Bahrain and Singapore.

Well, there was more excitement and interest in today's qualifying than in the whole weekend at Baku.

If the weather is similar tomorrow it could an exciting race.

Button 3rd Hulk 2nd who would have expected that
Kerbs 4 now that was making the circuit safe wasnt it
Bet Danni has revised his views about them now

Rosberg under investigation for causing the collision, his day might still get worse...

Doubt it will come to it, but, that's one heck of a way to resign :)

Rosberg found guilty, gets a slap on the wrist...

Rosberg given a 10s penalty & 2 penalty points for last-lap incident. #AustrianGP result does not change. More soon

Definitely an exciting race, just wish Rosburg had lost a few more places for that deliberate punt!

The highlights on c4 could have been better it was disjointed with in cockpit shots of overtake tries then somewhere in the future a replay but not always
Yes good race. Nico is still blaming Lewis as usual. Toto and Merc are seriously going to have to bring in team orders which is a pity as that will be the end of racing at the front but while ever Nico keeps going kamacarse they will have no choice
Max is the man again what a talent for such a tender age
Sebs blow out is a mystery to Pirelli (wait for track debri to appear)

Good to see 3 different manufacturers on the podium as well as 8 different teams in the top 10. Also good to see McLaren back in near contention, even if it was slightly artificially! Good luck to Mercedes should they try to control Rosberg...

The problem merc are going to have with Nico is he doesn't seem to be able to accept he was at fault today and his actions cost the team (and himself) points despite everyone else seeing it clearly. If he thinks that everyone is wrong except himself he'll do the same again in the future. Team orders may solve that but wouldn't be good for f1 in general.

If there is no evidence of brake frailer or similar problem and it seems there isn't, then Rosberg should be getting some kind of server penalty for the dangerous stunt of deliberately trying to run another car off the track. He didn't attempt to follow any kind of racing line which make it dangerous deliberate cheating AGAIN.
On the other hand it was a great race with the outcome unknown until the last few seconds of the race, the perfect entertainment and how it should be.

Rosbergs brakes were hot, but if you thought you had brake failure you'd brake earlier, not later. He knew Hamilton was past into the corner, but tried to run Hamilton off the track. Lewis has been aggressive to him before a dew times, Rosberg has tried to repeat, mostly it comes out very badly for both of them when he does.
If wernlein keeps driving well, I suspect he might find himself in a Mercedes with rosbergs contract not being renewed.

Of course the big question is why stop Hamilton "as a safety precaution following vettels tyre exploding". Favouring Nick as they had to stop him, but Hamilton was doing the one stop, had worked his supersofts brilliantly stretching them out. No issue with the soft tyres he was on which would easily have gone to the end.
Both hamiltons pit stops were 2 secs longer than rosbergs?
So team favouring nice for the drivers championship this year?

I don't believe the conspiracy stories, but you never know and that must be at the back of Lewis mind as well.

I actually think this is the reason for toots anger. They'd engineered a one two finish, by putting Hamilton on an unnecessary second stop, thinking they'd leave nice out in front. Strange how it's always Hamilton gets the slow pit stops and yet he's got very good at hitting his marks.
Plus there's too many times they call him in for extra stops this season. The onetime Hamilton refused and it turned out to be the right call.

There is also the fact Lewis is in for grid penalties with the amount of units used
If you were merc would you not support the most likely to win the championship
But I pity them if team orders are imposed like either driver will obey Nico because he cant understand and Lewis because he wont

Facts From Previous Race

Lewis Hamilton’s Austrian Grand Prix victory means British drivers have now won a total of 250 world championship races.

Some of the most successful countries in terms of winning racing drivers haven’t enjoyed success for many years. The most recent Brazilian race winner was Rubens Barrichello in the 2009 Italian Grand Prix and the last French victory was 20 years ago, courtesy of Olivier Panis in Monaco.

Hamilton’s first win at the Red Bull Ring means there are only three circuits on the current calendar he hasn’t won at. Two of those have only held one race during his F1 career: Baku and Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Interlagos is the only track Hamilton has raced at every year since his F1 debut without scoring a victory.

After the first nine races last year Mercedes had taken a maximum possible 18 podium finishes. Over the same period this year they’ve managed only 11 – a sign their previous dominance has taken a hit.

This was Hamilton’s 46th win, leaving him five short of Alain Prost who occupies second place in the all-time winners’ table.

He also took his fifth pole position of the season, giving him a career total of 54, and his 30th fastest lap which puts him level with Nigel Mansell. Hamilton therefore took a ‘hat-trick’ of win, pole and fastest lap for the tenth time in his career.

His Q2 lap of 1’06.228 was the fastest ever seen around the Red Bull Ring, formerly known as the A1-Ring. This is the shortest lap time seen in F1 for over two-and-a-half decades, going back to Nigel Mansell’s pole position time for the French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard in 1990, which was 1’04.402.

Rosberg’s career-best run of 14 consecutive front row starts came to an end. Only five drivers have managed longer streaks: Senna, Hamilton, Damon Hill, Prost and Mansell.

Instead Nico Hulkenberg joined Hamilton on the front row of the grid. This was his second front row start, the only other being his 2010 pole position for Williams in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.

It was a good qualifying session for Jenson Button too, who earned his highest starting position since the 2014 British Grand Prix with third place. You have to go back to the 2006 Chinese Grand Prix for the last time a Honda-powered car started that high – on that occasion the driver was Button’s team mate Barrichello in a Honda RA106.

Another star of qualifying was Pascal Wehrlein, who equalled the best starting position for Manor/Marussia/Virgin by taking 12th on the grid, as Jules Bianchi did at Silverstone in 2014.

Wehrlein went on to score his first point and give the team its second points finish in its six-year history. This was the first since the team was formally renamed Manor at the beginning of this season.

So if the merc pair crash again there is going to be a WHAT?
Suspend one or both if its a 50 50 thats going to go down well with the fans promoters and bernie
Fine the multi millionaires sure thats going to hurt
Or fiddle the pit stops or bum stratergy more likely I am damn sure it wont be out in the open without damaging Mercedes
Maybe it will be just "youve been a naughty naughty boy"
Get rid of one and solve everything

IMO .... Tyres are too close to the edge these days ,look at last weekend for example . Next year will be very interesting with the wider and i'm assuming lower profile tyres .
No low profile for next year
Probably no team choice in the first few races due to production not being up to it
Silverstone this year has pirelli for the first time recommending tyre life not you understand from sebs blowout but due to the high speed nature of Silverstone ho ho

That rain shower made for an interesting race, some excellent driving by numerous drivers.

Britney under investigation for getting help over the radio :p.
