HOLGA tastic... Show us your TOY CAMERA pics...:-)

So - afternoon out shooting BnW, hour or so to soup them after dinner, overnight drying, scans tomorrow morning - we'll look out for your postings tomorrow after lunch then...:naughty:

I wish I could :p.

I got colour film, and I put the 12 exposure cover on (6cm x 6cm), I think my first photo I accidentally took with the lens cap on, but I can't remember.

So where do I get the films processed? Jessops? and what do I ask for, just "process this 120 MF 12 exposure film good sir" ? Never done this before :D.

As I said above, I tend to use Peak Imaging for colour (Neg or Tranny) stuff - i've got my own scanner, so tend to just have process only done, though I'm aware that they also do process/scan or process/print/scan. Personally, given the hit-rate from holga's i'd just get them scanned, though of course, for the first film it'd be nice to have a complete record I suppose. I have to admit I've only shot one reel with a Holga, and didn't really like any of the shots - most of the MF stuff i've done has been when I've cadged my mates Bronica for a shoot or two - not really the lo-fi photography end tbh...

I'll give them a go I guess, I have a desktop scanner (one of the printer/scanner combinations?) Is this adequate, or is a specialist film scanner I need?
I'm a bit confused as to how many stages there are? negatives is the film that comes out of camera? then you can have it processed, what does the processed bit look like? and print, well that's just printed photos I guess.

You send the (C41) film out of the camera to be processed. When it's processed it is developed into negatives - a inverted colour representation of your picture, on a orange base film. This can be scanned (either by you with a dedicated scanner or by the people who handled the developing) and turned into a digital file, usually sent back on a cd/dvd from the processing co. Prints are, as you say, the traditional bits of paper called photographs.

Unless your scanner has an adaptor to handle slides it's unlikely you'll beable to get anything workable out of the neg's - to scan negatives/slides you actually need light to be shining through from above the neg., down into the read-head on the scanner. Some scanners have a light arrangement built into the lid of the scanner, but off hand, there's only one i can remember that's a combi-print/scanner and that's a £300 canon one...

FWIW I get mine processed and scanned by Peak... ... I don't do prints because of BY's hit and miss comment... :D ... easier to print any you might want from the digital files then rather than faff about scanning your first ones yourself... :cautious:

When you decide get into it in a bigger way it may then be worth getting a scanner and even thinking about processing your own fillums... ;)

Look forward to seeing your first images... ... however they turn out... :naughty:

And I wouldn't worry about the lens cap thing... we've all got THAT T shirt...

So in the meantime perhaps a couple more from yours truly to keep us alive...

Still from the 120 CFN

1. Mono Experiment... that didn't work...

2. Benson... Well he is a mono-dog anyway... :D

3. Pond Life... A study in black & white... :wacky:

Soz about the limited size but it seems like I messed up on the Flickr upload so I may have to sort that at some point... :cautious:

:p

Well my 120N has just pitched up at work so I'm going to tweak it a tad [flock the interior, already has 2 working apertures] then try and get some shots this week.

Didn't do anything with mine except bung a roll of 120 in... :naughty:

Look forward to seeing your results... :D

Will do mate. Got some colour Fuji film and have ordered some B&W Ilford stuff too. Decisions, decisions, what to try first!

I'm inclined to agree! Covered the two offending holes inside that cause streaky light leaks and sprayed the non-sensitive interior parts matt black this evening. Going to let it air overnight then I'll stick a roll of film in tomorrow and see what I can find to shoot.

 ... crikey bob I didn't do any of that... :cautious:

By 'eck - it'll be taking proper photographs if you don't stop meddling with it. Next thing you'll be putting a decent lens on it!

Exactly - that molten blob of semi-opaque plastic is an intrinsic part of it's charm...

I'm not a great fan of the light leak shots personally [that's why I've farted around doing what I've done], but I do like the distortion and vignetting the Holgas develop, so went for the "blob" lens rather than the glass [] version!

Finally got a few more to add to the pool!

Got a few B&W films processed at Jessops, took 2 weeks(!) to get the back but the print quality is amazing so I'm really pleased.

These are the first few that I scanned using the scanner in the Uni library and it makes them look like crap really. They all came out a wierd grey and theres "stippling" on the scans that I guess came from the texture on the paper.

Managed to reset the black point but the stippling is here to stay, it doesn't look too bad in the thumbnails but you can really notice it in the full size view of the 2nd one

2 words for you Kreuzberg, me old mate... FILM SCANNER

Ah but is it really worth it just for Holga shots... :cautious:

I reckon the duff processing just adds to the whole beauty of Holga image making... :D

Although they are all a little on the dark side particularly the bus shot but the other two certainly have more potential... (y)

And slightly larger images posted may be better than Flickr linking for the biggies...

:p

Been a while since I posted so I forgot how to post the bigger pics

Heres a couple more from the same batch:

Any better? :p

P.S As always theres a few more on my flickr for those who are interested

Those are nice. I've shot a couple of rolls of Ilford HP5 in the last week and I'm putting them in the post to Ilford labs today. The tension's great, I'd forgotten what it's like waiting to get your photos back from a lab!

Excellent Kreuz... (y) ... and you have some wonderful images on your Flickr too... ... love the mix of colour and mono both with some great takes... ;)

:p

I guess I've got the bug, new arrival today:

Just need to get some ISO 100 film as the 400 I've got is probably too sensitive for the 1/35s shutter speed, I fancy getting my hands on some Fuji Velvia 100 to put through it. Probably a cable release too for landscapes as I don't trust my jittery hands for that relatively long shutter speed.

Excellent congratulations... (y) ... and good luck with the trials... :D

We are obviously looking forward to witnessing the results... :naughty:

:p

Cool!

I picked up a couple of new cameras from a charity shop the other day; a readers digest panorama and a cosmic 35 (rebadged smena), cost me £4 :)

Heres a couple more off the next film I scanned, check out how random the vignetting is. Same film and camera and only a couple of exposures apart:

Got my first rolls of film back from Ilford, mostly utter rubbish of course, but here's a few which are tolerable:

A view over Bradgate Park, Leicestershire:

and "Old John", a landmark feature of the park [got to watch for dead space, apparently the view finder may show as little as 60%]:

Trying some off camera flash [a bit overdone and caught the flash in the mirror behind, doh!]:

and a view experimenting to gauge the camera's DOF:

I've got a couple of rolls of colour I've shot too, so I'll get them off to be processed soonish.

Nice set Deckard, the first and last ones are excellent! I cant believe that the leaves on the ground are in focus!!

Few more from me:

The vignetting differences are well amazing and nicely illustrated there KB... (y)

Loving the Old John shot Deck... ... and the depth on that last shot is quite stunning... ... (y)

Another brilliant set KB... :D ... the double exposure on the last is superb... ;)

:p

I put this post in the general film shot thread but thought I'd copy it here too as it seemed appropriate so apologies for any seemingly unnecessary duplication.

Got my first roll back from Peak Imaging that I'd run through my Agfa Clack. Tried out some Velvia 50, here's a couple of samples:

It's surprisingly good for a "toy" camera shooting 6x9 negatives, there's some obvious chromatic aberration laterally but it's tolerably sharp even.

Here's some from my "proper" toy camera, the Holga 120N, taken on Superia 400:

Larger sizes on my flickr, feedback welcome

Very nice the colours on the first ones are really good and saturated.

I really like the ones taken with the Holga I think they are very striking.

Loving the middle Holga pic... that's what it's all about for me. I kinda stopped using mine as I had no way of getting the pics on the computer other than using my dslr to take pics of the negs. Didn't really work too well.

I have to admit, having seen them elsewhere, I did pop over here to make sure and was pleasantly surprised to see you had the same idea... (y)

I totally agree with Knikki these are both excellent images and the first ones are brilliant for a pseudo toy...

The Holga shots illustrate just what it's all about for me... I love the variations and surprises it produces and your images are cracking examples of the total attraction that is this Holga phenomenon, toy or no toy... :D

:p

Thanks guys. The Holga certainly has charm! I can see why the landscape 'togs rave about Velvia too, the saturation is pleasing without looking overdone.

Ooo some fantastic shots in here, having never used a film camera before, I think its time to try it out with little Holga! :D

Just bear in mind that if you shoot 120 film in colour it'll probably cost more than the camera did to put 2 rolls (maybe 24 shots - I say maybe, because of the inherent flakienessof the Holga) of film through. That's why a lot of us shoot BnW - we process and scan our own stuff, which takes the cost down to around a quid more than film cost per roll.
