Jessops on the verge of administration

A company goes tits up and thousands are about to loose jobs and everyone bitches about Vouchers.

UNBELIEVABLE!

Get your kit from Calumet and you would be fine.

Seriously???? What about the people that bought those vouchers as gifts?? Do you know each of their circumstances? The gran that spent some of her pension to give a grandchild! Or others less fortunate that spent hard earned cash on a loved one!! Yes it's sad people will lose jobs but others will also lose money they can il afford!!

Your comment is unjust!!

jessops.com is still up, but says

"Please note that the Jessops website will not currently process any new orders however you are able to read product descriptions and articles, customer reviews and watch videos. "

I do feel sad for those working there. These are hard times to lose one's income. Hope they all somehow find re-employment.

My first purchase through a Jessops was in the early to mid 80s when I traded in my gripped Pentax MX for a Canon A-1 at their branch on the raised section on the north side of Finchley Road. Then in 2001 I bought my first digital, an all of 2.1MP Ixus 300 from their Richmond branch, in the process trading in all of my remaining FD lenses. My last purchase I think was the Manfrotto Neotec monopod which was being offered at an attractive price which was boosted further by a 10% online discount.

Our high streets sadly are changing rapidly.....

I have a relative works in Jessops. A customer came in and told them. :shake:

Cant understand why people give gift vouchers, whats wrong with cash? In my days you would get a few quid in a Christmas/Birthday card.

Its not the first time this has happen, and Im sure it wont be the last.

I'm guessing that these kind of people were the cornerstone of a good percentage of the Jessops business. It's very easy for an enthusiast to shop around/look for advice on forums like here a source from elsewhere but Jessops was the high street window that provided an easy entry point for the more casual consumer into what can be quite a specialist area. It was the first stop for me and I assume many others. The unfortunate irony is that those who were supporting the business look likely to be those who are set to loose out.

The BBC news interviewed some people from the high street who clearly had no idea about the shop itself.

One person went to claim that it was because her smart phone can take amazing photos, that's the reason they have gone into administration.

As someone mentioned earlier a lot of people are just using their mobile phones to take photos. Photos are then posted to FB and hardly ever printed.

These high street stores need to sell helluva lot of these cameras and higher margin accessories.

So easy to order from places like Amazon (especially as their costs are so much cheaper) and they can get away with paying so little Corporation tax.

I suspect that only specialists will survive.

I purchased a canon ef 85mm f1.8 from them yesterday which should be covered by warranty. Just hope it doesn't break anytime soon.
You've got to feel sorry for the employees though.

I think sometimes people give vouchers or gift cards so as not to appear too direct if you get my drift. Some of my friends used to give me HMV gift cards because they knew I enjoyed film and music. I wonder how long it will be, before the hound gives up singing into the gramophone.....

It's going to be this year I suspect, sadly. I read an Article on about Virgin who have just closed their flagship Paris Megastore... it 'was' bucking the trend against online sales, but now they said it's time to close.

I'll miss the interest free credit.. but not much else about Jessops.

The fat lady is not singing, but I can hear her clearing her throat.

I'm a worker at Jessops and I honestly say I'm gutted..

Been working there just over a year now as my second job and found it enjoyable as I came across so many people with different backgrounds, Some loaded, some poor but all wanting a subject I knew something about.

I have to say I feel massively let down by Jessops as I knew nothing of the sort about any money troubles in the company witch if my store closes my life will be totally different as I have no saving to fall back on.

Just wish I could see the world coming stable...

Oh No! Were are we going to try out equipment before buying on line now?

Not that I was a user of Jessops, but the above has been one of the problems. If we keep on with the buying habit online, especially those of us that buy grey imports, plenty of other businesses will fold.

Really sorry Sam.

Stay positive, When one door closes, another opens.

sign of the times but then every camera i've bought i always ended going somewhere else because jessops were always more expensive when i looked, so they bring it on themselves if they wont compete with the competition and stick with their higher prices unless you wanted a cheap crappy camera.

its been on the cards for ages that Jessops were in deep trouble. First of all there was talk about them using space in departmental stores, then the close down of stores as leases ran out, but obviously neither happened now total shutdown. I normally ask for christmas and birthday Jessops vouchers but not this christmas gone as an inside contact warned me to stay away.

Gavin yes they can, once into receivership the last to get anything back is customers, first for anything is the lenders, ie banks and, creditors, the last on the list and voucher holders, at least they have something to frame and put on the wall.

Realspeed

Bought a few things from Jessops, some relatively high priced when it was cheaper elsewhere to do my bit for the brick and mortar high street. Sad if it goes under, not much in Glasgow city centre for cameras with Jacobs closing too.

Wonder how this affects the Jessops vouchers people might have got from exchanging Tesco clubcard points?

Will Tesco take them back, will Jessops honour them or are they just worthless now?

From that article on the BBC:

PwC added that at present Jessops would not honour customer vouchers or accept returned goods.

However, supermarket Tesco said that it would give a full refund to any customer who had recently exchanged Clubcard vouchers for tokens to spend with Jessops.

Today people want a high street store with internet prices. It simply won't happen and because of this massive changes are afoot. I see the high street is going to become more independent and specialist again though, which in some ways is going to be a good thing.

Its been announced that Vouchers will no longer be accepted by Jessops

How many more times is this going to be "announced" in this thread? Heheheh.

You've got to feel sorry for the employees though.

Products are covered by a manufacturer's warranty, not by the retailer. If you did buy an extended warranty from them, it won't be run by Jessop's either (it'll be underwritten).

Sam - it is sad that you will likely lose your job.

I am a little curious when you say that you knew nothing of the money troubles that the company had.

Did you not see all the news items on the web when you did your research before your interview?

Yeah but specialist what? Denture repair studios? Nail and beauty salons? The high street is going to be nothing but pound shops and take aways.

Finally decided on Monday to bite the bullet and order a Zpro filter holder and adaptor ring. Went to jessops as had 20 quid in vouchers to use but they didnt have in stock so ordered them for home delivery. Now not sure if i'll ever recieve them.
Fortunatly I paid the balance with credit card so will be covered for that part.
The vouchers were tesco vouchers converted to jessops vouchers so not as huge a loss as it could be but still a pain.

A few years back I had a similar issue with I think it was Comet vouchers, so I went back to the place they had been saved for with points and they exchanged them for me.

So would hope Tesco would do the same here.

Eltham high street is half way there already

I think there are three £1 or 99p stores.

We do have a small Debenhams and good M&S though.

In Reading, we've got "PoundLand", "99p store" and "Poundworld" all within about 50 yards of each other.

Of course I don't frequent these places, I just saw them on my way to House of Fraser
