OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

Anyway, moving on, seeing as this is Fusty and Crusty rather than Hot Topics;

View attachment 99613

I've just had this delivered by a very nice man via EBay. I liked the slightly utilitarian feel of my Fed-1G and this Kiev-4a has that too although it feels much more robust. Apart from a bit of clean needed, the camera feels almost like new (unused for 15 years but still feels pretty smooth). Now I just need to put a roll of Vista through to test :0)
Looks good. How long until it becomes a teasmade and has a few LEDs fitted? :)

It looks a bit smaller than my Zorki 4

Well, before it arrived I was thinking about a black respray/re-skin but it's in such good condition I don't think I could!

It's slightly taller and thicker than my Fed-1G but I'd much heavier.

Unless Charlotte wishes to do some sort of stand up comic sketch to entertain you, you won't be needing much popcorn Ken

I'm outa here...........................

Well Asha to bring you back in off topic ;).... there was a good programme on tv about near where you live (a cycle ride?) about Languedoc region and unbelievable there was an actual christian crusade to exterminate the Cathars (just because their christian religion was different) many villages and inhabitants were wiped out...carry on folks on topic o_O

Quite correct, it is spelt "tow"....... my spelling of of the English vocabulary is without doubt deteriorating, not that it is a surprise given that I live in a foreign country where, on a daily basis, I write and speak a different language!

As for my attitude to women.......As you are, I believe, a female, perhaps my humour comes across as irritating or offensive, I don't know.
Either way it is not intentional and I offer my appologies if that be the case.

It is a known fact that many men are unable to spend or do things they wish as they are "controlled" by their female partners.....I was simply making humour of those types of situations/ relationships..

The fact that I am often without female company has nothing to do with my attitude towards the female race, in fact the majority of friends that I have are female, mostly in relationships / married and they relate to me extremely well as I generally have a much more open minded, and equal rights attitude towards ladies than do a lot of men!

Prior to making an assumption that my attitude might be one of the reasons that I find myself without female company, may I suggest that you meet me in person, spend a considerable length of time with me and then once you consider that you "know me" make a judgement on my character

I would hope that your pre judgement of other people, in the way that you have chosen to pre judge me, is not a regular behaviour on your part, as you may well find yourself without too many friends or partners!!!.

I'm sure you're quite nice in real life, however your regular comments on here about women do grate. If you don't mind - reign it in a little. It's a photography forum, not a boy's club.

I can't help but think that your attitude to women might be one of the reasons you seem to find yourself without one so often... and it's spelt "tow".

Not if you are riding a Camel. :)

Charlotte, Asha is not nice by any means,he is without doubt a perfect wonderful GENTLEMAN.

Yeah, sorry about that ;0) I turned down a Canonet Giii QL17 to get the Kiev instead and I think I made the right decision. I need to actually go and buy some film before I can test it though. I've got a fridge shelf full of 120 but no 135 at the moment :0(
Tbh I'm considering selling on my current FSU rangefinders in LTM and getting a Kiev 2a or early 4a. Now that I've got my Canon 7 and Bessa R (quite by accident) I don't really need them. The Kiev on the other hand benefits from the lenses matching up better and a better reputation for build quality. It's either that or I can wait and perhaps treat myself to a real Contax.

I haven't used a Contax myself but have read a few times that a good condition Kiev-4 is basically the same camera so paying the premium for the Contax doesn't give much benefit.

I recently bought a Yashica FX-D Quartz which is just the same as the Contax 139 Quartz, minus a few features, like TTL flash, DOF preview and aperture readout.

Well bored so I bid on a Chinon Cp-7m just the body though for £6.20 inc postage..do I need it cos not , not worried about lenses as it's Pentax mount and is all buttons and no knobs with LCD.

Well arrived and IMO is a better camera than the cheaper Pentax push button ones with built in winder and motor drive. One feature that is interesting is "time mode" this is an extended bulb mode where you can tell the camera how long you want the shutter to be left open. This essentially means that if you don’t need to meter, your shutter speeds run from 1/2000 second to 90 minutes.....and also no light seals to worry about, now to put a film in it.

I bought a Yashica FX-3 with Yashica ML 50/2, Yashica DSB 28/2.8 and Yashica flash for £13.99 from Cash Converters today. I read these ones were made by Cosina and are the same as the Vivitar V3000.

Apart from the mount of course.

They also had a Mamiya C3 for £120 and there was a Chinon CP-7m but I don't remember the price

... and quality!

The Contaxes feel a bit more solid.
I'm a bit of a Contax nut and have a soft spot for Yashica cameras too.
The closest a Yashica comes to a Contax is the FR1, which is so close to an RTS.

Enjoy, anyway :)

The FR1 is based on the FR and the RTS
Yep!

I preferred the FR1, just a personal thing probably as it was my first SLR. At last count I had 4 of them, 3 of them due to the lenses I was wanting.

^I was writing in jest :) I have an FR and an FR2 as well. I don't particularly like the feel of the FR2 or its controls.

I bought the FX-3 for the lenses that came with it. I like my FX-D more as it's light and has AE, but it doesn't have the aperture readout in the viewfinder like the FR.

Well I had the FR1 with the common fault... the counter stopped working, IIRC when I took the top plate off it was cheap plastic gear wheel that was the problem...h'mm a design fault that should never have happened.

Be careful you could have problems using Rikenon lenses on a Pentax....can't remember why as I'm not a pentax camera body guy but someone here knows.

Isn't it something to do with the autofocus pin on certain Rikenon lenses? I don't think that will be a problem with my setup as neither the lens nor the body feature AF. Is there some other potential issue I might be unaware of though?

Not quite sure of the details, as they vary between discussions, but this thread on PentaxForums is helpful...

Thanks for that Chris. My Rikenon lens has no pins at all (just the aperture lever) so fingers crossed I'll be ok. :)

i dont know why but something appeals to me about the p30

I've yet to test it, but it feels quite nice to hold. It's small and light with the 50mm lens attached and the controls are quite stripped back. Just need to give it a bit of a clean, and then I'll feed it some Poundland Agfa.

look forward to a report on how it performs

WHere to buy cheap film camera??

It's usually a balance of cheap versus warranty... and of course it depends what sort of film cameras you want. Dropping in to your local charity shops on a regular basis is a good thing to do; you may be more likely to see cheap compacts, butour local Oxfam occasionally has a bunch of Practika and Fujica cameras, occasionally a Canon or Pentax, and random lenses. Several people here go to their local car boot sales, but the general advice is to arrive early for the bargains (does that mean 6 am????). You may occasionally see well-priced cameras on here, once you get Classifieds access. Fleabay can be ok; BIN (buy it now) prices are often vastly inflated, check the recent sold prices for comparison. Auctions can get you a real bargain sometimes, particularly if the camera is mis-listed, but you may have to be careful with the timing of your final bid. No warranty but if it's dodgy you can always send it back.

thanks Chris for your help! would definitely check it out!

WHere to buy cheap film camera??

To add to what Chris said, you could also try some of the retailers that sell or specialise in used film camera. You'll most likely pay more than yout would at a charity shop or eBay, but you'll have the reassurance that you'll be able to get a refund should anything not be working as described, and in some cases might even get a limited warranty.

Here're a few that you could look at (although there are plenty of others):

http://www.ffordes.com/home
http://wycameras.com/
http://vintageclassiccamera.com/

There are also some eBay traders who specialise in used film camera gear and you may find that they are more reliable in their descriptions and ability to confirm all is in working order etc. than a private seller who's just found an old camera in their grandad's wardrobe or something.

e.g. I've bought a camera from this seller before without any problems: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/sopworthvintage/

If all you want is a 35mm compact camera, then you should be able to get something decent for under a tenner. You can also pick up more recent 35mm film SLRs at bargain prices for certain models e.g. Canon EOS 300 cameras can be had for about a tenner too - although you'll probably have to buy a lens seperately.

Good luck and don't forget to share your pics! :)

I'd buy it just for the way the film advance and shutter speed dial integrate with the top plate, sooo clean and flush...:)

Funny, that bit of the design really appeals to me too! The only downside (and the reason I don't already have one) is that you can't push/pull film without changing the DX code on the canister.

If it's got exposure compensation then you can set that permanently for the whole roll if you only need however many stops it has of that.

Goes and gives his T70 a cuddle. Take no notice of the nasty man, you'v'e got character ...

Let's give the T70 a plug..great camera esp for beginner why? No problem with light seals and you can select SS (safety shift) so if you cock up the shutter speed i.e. exposure, the camera would auto shift to the correct speed, well down to 2 secs. Shutter speeds are very accurate and just slightly out at 1/1000 sec better than your old cloth horizontal shutters :D Anyway it must be a good camera cos I have two o_O

That's cause people are giving them away :D

Ah because people are brainwashed to get an Olympus OM10, Canon AE1, Yashica FR1 HUH etc when the T70 is far superior if you just want to take shots and not be a poser or one of the lads. :D
