THE PP GAME!

young_family1.jpg

firstly I changed the crop to try and make it fit into the rule of thirds...

using PSE10

01. added layer mask with orange filter then adjusted to 10-13%
02. isolated the background using the smart brush tool and made a new adjustment layer mask
03. desaturated the back ground only
04. copied the layer mask and changed the mode from 'normal' to 'colour burn' to background only making it less gray and brighter
05. used dodge and burn tools to make her top redder and bring out the eyes more + teeth
06. Had cup of tea and found out I've ran out of hobnobs
07. Went to shop to get more hobnobs
08. Came back and posted photo on here

clone out tv flash reflection,

a crude selection of the subjects inverted, then levels to darken the background.

another overall levels for subject, masked out white clothes to preserve detail.

crop

Hi Neil

Just tried this and :(

I never take portraits so never have done PP on this type of shot and am getting really stuck

So far I have straightened, cropped tried picking out the couple and their young one but where next

Better start learning how to do selections better :LOL::LOL:

the good thing about the thread is you have to work outside what you would normally do, its all trial and error, hopefully a good idea will just come to you.

some great edits so far, thanks guys(y)

Haven't joined in for a while.

Thought I'd have a go, as I like working with portraits.

All done in Aperture:

Straightened/cropped.
Adjusted exposure/white balance.
Did some slight skin retouching/smoothing.
Cloned part of flash refection out as I wanted to retain the 'starburst' effect.
Added my VSCO Film Look B&W preset (based on their Ilford HP5 one).
Added a fairly severe vignette.

I think YOU will need a supply of hobnobs to give you the energy you will need to judge this one

If a hobnob was pushed under my door it could sway my choice;-)

thanks for all the entries, ive got it down to 2 and am having trouble picking a winner, so its over to the coin again, the 2 in question are Kerioak, and Sonial, ,and the coin says....................................................................................................................
Kerioak!, well done Christine, if i pm my email address can you send over the full sized jpeg please.
its good to see so many entries, and hopefully we can keep this thread busy again, thanks again everyone.

A big well done Kerioak you sure deserve it but I can see why the coin spinning was used again as there have been so many good entries. So good that they scared me off as I am not really into people shots :D

Look forward to the new photo so I can have a go :)

A quickie before an excursion to the pub...

in lightroom:

alter white balance and exposure

vignettee

save for web

love the green jumper Christine :)

Thanks Christine, thanks Neil. Here's a Little Owl that needs some work.

Sorry. Thanks for pointing that out. The file is definitely there on minus-dot-com but the links aren't working! So much for free storage.
I've put the dng on my web space here

I'll have a shot:

Quick run through Topaz Denoise
Into Photoshop to clone away the poo
Then in LR4:
- Adjusted tone curve
- Bumped up the vibrance
- Warmed up the white balance
- Played with the hues to bring out the background colors
- Global sharpening with big mask value to sharpen edges
- Local sharpening and exposure lifting via brush for the owl itself
- Portrait crop

a bit late but here's my attempt, natural look hopefully!

edit: colour adjustment, cropped, blemishes removed and skin retouched (hopefully not noticable) stain removed from table and tv reflection darkened, eyes and teeth whitened

Here;s my owl

Clones out the owls little accident,

separated the background and upped the red curve to give a purply look to separate the owl better,

yellowed up the beak and eyes and browned up the feathers slightly,

added a vinette

oh and cropped to take into account rule of thirds

owl.jpg

here goes.. went for the 1970's Kes look. Even though that was a different bird (i think )

Cloned out the carp on the stone
high pass sharpen on the eyes
slight saturation boost on the full owl
cross process colours
lighten in shadows
vignette

Not as sharp as i'd liked, but i was only working with the jpeg for a quick edit before leaving work. Nothing to do with quality of photography :D

Well guys this is a toughie.. It was a close run thing but I'm going to go with GammyKnee's version. I just like it.
Sorry it was such a poor shot to start with.

Here's my version.. I applied sharpening to the owl only.

Many thanks Stephen!

I'm just back from a slightly disappointing sunset trip up Ben A'an (clouds didn't cooperate), so I'll probably pick one of those shots as the next target. Very late now so I'll post up the RAW first thing tomorrow (Thurs).

Well done GammyKnee (y)

When you put your pic up can you give an end time as well as day - thanks.

OK, I ended up choosing one of my reject flower pics. I just can't "do" flowers at the best of times, and since this is a reject, you've really got your work cut out!

End Date/Time: How about 6pm Saturday?
