THE PP GAME!

Thanks everyone.

Here is the next image to get your teeth into. I have tried to process it a few times but never been happy so would be interested if any of you can make something of it.

Here's mine
l liked the wood and the curved pattern than had straight hard edges in so focused on that. (kind of like a river of wood, over the river below)

IMG_6535.jpg

Made B&W to help focus on texture
cropped
sharpened (a fair bit) used bridge 100,1-ish, and masked a fair bit
increased contrast (used channel mixer set to monochrome decreased reds increased blue on soft light)
levels (increased blacks)
That was it

here`s mine
opened raw
upped clarity to give the timbers more texture
slight adjustments to the other sliders
sharpened, and reduced noise
saved 3 files, -60, +45, and +145 and opened with photomatix
choose b/w from list

ppgame-7.jpg

Simon a bit late from me but well done

When will you be calling this one?

Ok lets see if I can remember!!
RAW adjustments to warm the colours
Cropped
Removed Man & lens flare
Extended the highlight on the handrail
Darkened with brightness & Contrast then Highlights & Shadows
Then erased the bridge to keep the original colour
Saturated the red to give the sky a similar colour as the bridge
Vignette

I think that was about it

Went for an Arty slant on this one... Loved the lead in of the curved wooden bridge so tried to emphasise the woods colour and increase the depth of perspective to force the eye to follow a path into the image. (oooh er! maybe I got a bit too "into" this one!):wacky:

A,hem; Opened in ACR: upped the saturation and added clarity to bring out the loveliness of the wood: Into PSE copied BG layer, blurred it, masked to reveal the wood and increase perspective. Added an adjustment layer for final brightness & contrast.

I thought the sky and the lens flare were the things needing sorting on this....

IMG_6535_hdr_sky.jpg

Created 5 exposures from Canon's DPP (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2)
added black strip (500 pixels ish) to bottom of each (you'll see why later)
merged these in Dynamic Photo HDR
cropped off bottom 500 pixels to remove embedded watermark from DPHDR
Removed lens flare in GIMP with copy / clone tool
Disappeared the man with clone tool too.
And then a tiny blur to give the dreamy afternoon look.

Again, all done with FREE software.

But isn't it better to 'name drop' "done in CS6 & LR4.2"

I often use Picasa but never a full edit but may try :D

Thats crafty! (y)

Indeed.... I've previously been cropping it off - but it works just as well adding the extra pixels. Much better (IMO) than the likes of Photomatix trial which plaster smaller watermarks all over the image.

It's a bit of a faff, but at 10 seconds per picture it's not that bad.

TPWoodenBridgeLandscape.jpg

Bit of HDR work, on bridge only, via Dynamix plug in in PE10.

Sky selected and individual saturation work

Felt happy'ish with middle section

High pass to sharpen all

Tried square crop, to be different to entries so far, but felt it lost too much of the spirit of the shot which was the 'river like' wooden bridge.

Only took five minutes - I usually spend far longer fiddling but perhaps one can over fiddle

Great edits so far. Will call monday night if possible. 4 yr old having broken nose manipulated under anaesthetic in morning so depends on how he is as to whether I will have time

I thought I'd give the serious thread a go. I forgot to take notes and didn't save it but from memory....

Crop square; I wanted to give the wood decking the focus without distractions.
Try to avert vision from the mill signage by dulling and adding noise,
Clone out the flare and levels adjust middle section (buildings)
Levels adjust sky in new layer,
Duplicate layer and change to multiply to enhance wood appearance, then mask out everything but the wood.
I think I put a levels adjustment over the whole lot and tweaked the red.

Absolutely no worries family always come first and I am sure I speak for all of us. I hope the manipulation, on your 4 year old's nose, goes well.

Oh ouch! I hope your sons nose is ok and he's ok with the anaesthetic.

Thanks marsha. He has a lovely nose so hopefully they can straighten it for him.

Thanks John.

Enjoyed looking at all the edits. Good work everyone. My choice this time is Stephen. Glad you came over and had a go a 'serious editing'. Dean was a very very close second. I liked the edits that tried to emphasise the bridge as the subject as this was why I took the photo. I tried many angles and views but feel I may have to go back another time. I don't know if anyone recognises the bridge? It was featured on a tv programme with Kevin McLeod.

No edit from me this time too busy. Boys nose fixed anyway and you would have no idea he had had an anaesthetic this morning.

My internet speed is worse than dial up just now so no opportunity to take part.

I hope the op went well?

Well done Stephen.

It went well thank you. His nose is a bit swollen but he has been running about all afternoon like there is nothing wrong with him.

Wow, thank you. Really didn't expect that. I'll dig an image out in 10.

Sounds like your lad's been in the wars, but like Marsha says, they do recover remarkably fast (although I think "bounce back" may not be entirely appropriate in this instance)..

OK, here's a recent image taken on a recent Snowdonia trip. The wind was blowing from left to right, and as warm air met cold at the edge the mist and cloud was forming.
I don't have a raw file but the large tif can be found here or here through dropbox

yrElen.rar

(this is now packed into a rar file)

is Thursday evening ok?

All in GIMP.....

Recovered shadows
Increased Local contrast
B&W conversion using channel mixer on new layer
Increased saturation on original (colour) layer
Layer mask to cover foreground shadow and sky / far away background
Set opacity of masked B&W to 80% to allow some colour through
Rotated about 1º ACW
cropped out foreground rock
added black borders top and bottom

I couldn't get the TIF file so used a jpeg from using windows snip tool, when trying to download the TIF it directed me to buying quicktime pro;

opened in LR4

cropped to a more widescreen view and straightened the horizon
decreased highlights,
increased shadows a bit,
decreased blacks,
increased clarity,
changed to B&W mode,
opened in silver fx pro and adjusted until I was happy,
then printed image to jpeg with letterboxing effect.

I've put the image into a rar file so it's easier to get now.

thanks for that, it's much higher quality (y)

anyway here's the new one (hopefully you will see how much better it looks)

the new edit was all done in the same way except I used lens correction this time! and cloned out a few light patches that were a bit distracting in the bottom left corner.

Wanted to make this look like an old fashioned monochrome image. Sort of Ansel Adams kind of a thing hopefully

yrElen-Edit.jpg

LR3

Converted to B&W

Next adjustments to increase contrast and definition

Exposure +0.78
Recovery 8
Fill Light 0
Blacks 5

Brightness -40
Contrast 0

Clarity +47

Increased contrast with tone curve

Adjusted B&W slider on HSL panel
Aimed to blow out sky by increasing blues
Fiddled with yellows/oranges to get effect wanted with grass/rocks

Some final dodging and burning before export to make ridge more of a feature

Exported to PSE 10

Cropped and straightened image
Background layer copy created
Highlights/Shadows adjusted to sort out foreground and large areas in shadow. Wanted to lighten and retain some detail. Layer mask so only shadows effected.

Sharpened a bit with high pass 10 pixels 20% opacity soft light blending mode

Resized and saved for web

All quite different but I'm handing the batten to symmetricalOCD Ben.
I think his b&w comes closest to what I tried to do, although I appreciate it was a bit of a silk purse from a sow's ear job.

Here're my stabs at it, first the colour, then the B&W.
I tried to hold some detail in the shadows and in the clouds.

Yr_Elen_Colour.jpg

Like others I thought this lends itself to being Converted to B&W
Played with the lighting & Shadows
Brightness and contrast
Lots of vignette trying to get a more striking lighting effect.
Reduced the edge extension & a solid black layer inserted to frame
Inserted text

I've just noticed I missed the prize giving :( I should have sent the kids to bed earlier instead of watching you've been framed!!

Well at least you put an edit in which is more than I managed this time :naughty:

Ok I'll start this one off, I made 2 totally different versions of this and I'm going with this one.
Opened dng in camera raw and did basic ajustments. Photoshop proper then cropped, B+W conversion, radial blur, then zoom blur, a bit of layer masking then finally added a bit of grain back in.
