Hi, I've not been around for a while due to work commitments leaving me with no time and the camera gathering dust sadly. After giving up my previous camera I treated myself to a d3300 recently and would like to properly learn more as a hobby so thought this would be ideal to learn. Unfortunately I'm not going to have enough spare time to take shots and comment on all other entries, again, work - got to eat :D

So here is my new thread to give me a kick up the bum, and with a appreciated few days off work I'll get my first pattern shot up as soon as I've found something I'm happy with :)

Ooo nice! Great detail and focus. It is bugging me that the front edge of the leaf is just nicked off the shot, not sure why!! Sorry keep getting drawn to it. That being said, I think you could maybe crop the top off a little and come in real close on the in focus section.

Great shot :)

I agree with everything you've said, don't apologise! Thought the same about cropped front edge, I have the original I could crop again but I've been busy. Was going to change image but as it's a practice run I'll leave it :)

Welcome aboard aororae - good to have you here and I hope you're going to enjoy this.

BTW Don't forget to also add your photo to the "Post your photos here" thread
There are so many individual threads that gets difficult for people to keep track of who's posted their update every week, so sticking your photo and link in there is the way to say "hey! Mine's in now" !

Thanks Sarah, didn't remember that bit :D

Eta - will do later on laptop, very odd but can't find that thread on tapatalk, link takes me to actual website. Guessing it's a sticky that tapatalk seem to hide.

That's a cracker, aurorae. I like the frame filling nature of this shot and think it would actually have been slightly weaker had you not cropped very slightly as you have done (I mean cropped in camera, rather than in post). Lovely detail on the veins and frost - a really super take.

Only observation (which is outside your control) is the bokeh in the background of the grass looks a bit "nervous"... not sure whether you notice that on other shots you use that lens for?

I'm just using the 18-55 lens that came with the kit pjm1, as far as I'm aware the supplied lenses aren't that great? Hoping to get a 35mm prime over the next few weeks - I've only ever stuck with supplied lenses on cameras I've bought in the past so excited to see the difference.

Thanks for your comment :)

Kit lenses are usually jack-of-all-trade lenses (my Pentax 18-55 is a case in point). They're fine but won't typically be as good as a prime or even a prosumer zoom (e.g. the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 which is a crazily good value lens).

It all depends what you want to shoot with it: I guess it's rarer to shoot "bokeh" type shots with a wide angle - I tend to use my 50-135 f/2.8 for those sorts of images and that lens does produce lovely bokeh. Primes certainly ought to be better but worth checking how many aperture blades it has: if it's only 5 you get pentagonal bokeh!

Liking the full frame of the leaf in the shot, although couple of edges are missing it really makes the shot. nice detail in the veins of the leaf can be seen and highlighted bu the ice.

Thanks for the advice. I'm aiming to get the nikkor 35mm f/1.8 which seems to have a tonne of good reviews. I'd also like to add a macro lens but that'll be a way off yet and I presume expensive so will likely be asking advice on here when the time comes!

Although I'm not a Nikon user I also remember hearing good things about that lens. Are you on a crop sensor camera - if so it's basically your nifty fifty so handy to have (especially with that wide max aperture). I don't have any macro lenses but I found the Raynox DCR-250 was a good investment and actually works surprisingly well with my kit zoom (which has an already short min focus distance)... worth having a look at IMO.

Thanks :) Yeah I can see I was a bit overkill with the cropping now, I need to focus on editing this year as much as taking the actual photo. I have a terrible habit of sticking with what the camera produced and not editing it in any way.

I don't know anything about crop sensors and nifty fiftys :D It's a d3300 - still learning my way around it as only purchased a week or so ago. I'm extremely pleased with it though so far and much prefer it to my old nex c3 which I gave to my daughter for her collage course. Will continue reading my manual later as well as learning how to edit in photoshop - I used the editing tool on Flickr which I'm guessing is not the way to go!

Thanks for all your input, will get round to commenting on other entries this evening when I get a few things out of the way :)

Good stuff - and yes, that's a crop sensor (the size of the sensor is a bit smaller than a 35mm or "full frame" digital) which means lens focal lengths have a slightly different effect (including field of view) than they would on an old 35mm film camera, say. A nifty fifty is seen by a lot of people as a similar field of view as the human eye and therefore seen as a good "all round" or starter lens. On our crop cameras, our equivalent focal length is about 2/3rds of whatever it would be for a full frame / film camera... so our version of the 50mm would 2/3rds of that, which is pretty close to 35mm.

There are some big advantages to crop sensor cameras: they're cheaper, the lenses are usually cheaper, and because of the conversion factor above, a 500mm super telephoto is sort of equivalent to a 750mm telephoto on a full frame camera - that's a very long lens! There are also disadvantages but I prefer to focus on the positives :)

(It gets even more confusing for those of us with one crop sensor camera and also a medium format camera which requires conversion in the other direction!)

Nice opening image Good Luck for your 2015 52 challenge.

HI there...welcome aboard:wave:

Good start to your challenge , lovely focus on the patterns of the frost on the leaf , I don't mind the slightly cropped leaf bottom of frame as you've also caught it top & to the right which creates an even image for me (y)

Cracking start to the challenge with that shot and looking forward to seeing more from you. You sound a bit like I did when I started back in 2009  All those confusing terms, which photo editor, RAW vs Jpeg etc gave me nightmares :runaway:

I've used photoshop for making posters etc but never for editing a photo! Before I let my camera gather dust I got confused with using raw and the program to edit, slowed my laptop down too. I'm sticking with jpg for now until I deem myself at a suitable level to step up :D

I like the amount and level of detail you've captured in the very thin depth of field. A great autumnal shot.

BTW the 52's link in your signature is currently pointing to your 2012 52.

Ah okay, thanks! Mainly use tapatalk which doesn't show signatures, will sort this out later :)

Brilliant capture of a blissful facial expression.

Any four legged photo is gonna get a thumbs up from me.(y) Mine will definatly feature in my 52 at some point this year.

Excellent, love pooch photos! Thanks :)

Haha he is definitely in a state of bliss there!! Lovely capture of a lovely pooch!

He is! Bum up in the air usually gives it away haha! Thank you :)

Welcome to 2015 52s. Two good shots for starters - the leaf makes a lovely image and the dog is just right for Bliss! With 68 starters for the year, I don’t think any of us have a chance of commenting on every entry every week, but I hope to keep popping in to each thread at least once in a while. Good luck for the rest of the year.

Bliss, indeed, look at the look on his face :)

It's well composed and good detail.

I can decide if the WB is a little off, just looks a little green

I'm glad you got low down, unfortunately it did result in the fence being included.

Cheers.

I know what you mean posiview, it didn't look like that on my laptop when I increased vibrance slightly as the original looked too pale, but looking at it on different screens I think I overkilled it, will have to have a look and learn about editing properly. Thanks for honest comments :)
