Its a nice photo but I don't really notice the smoke much, its a bit like burning toast rather then smoke clouds. maybe a bit of light from the side/front to illuminate it a bit more

I think if it was to work in b&w you need to really darken the sky before as it seems a bit lost at the moment.

either shoot in raw and use the gradient filter or learn a bit about layer masks and put a selective gradient mask on

I might actually suggest a 50mm 1.8/1.4 for a first lens you can pick up the 1.8 for about £50-80 and it really gives you a chance to get used to your camera and think about your shots more as you can't zoom. Then if you find that you keep wanting to photo things closer or futher away you can...

Thats really impressive, I love the effects that you get in the water etc where it has frozen the motion. Bravo, a hell of a lot of work but worth it I think.

I'm a great fan of omni focus, it is a bit costly but you get a really great program that runs on your computer as well.
