weekly blakester's 52 for 2012, Week 52 "Busy (Beach Party)" Post 1215 FINISHED

Nice one Iain... did you leave them on the groyne... I'll have a look next time I'm there. :D

£5 says they are in his "pebble bag" for when he feels the need to do one of those shots.

Well Week 2 - Fear, I had an idea spring to mind immediately, that is fear of heights or in my case, in which I dont mind heights having been trained to work at height in a previous job, 'No Fear'.....but a healthy respect.
I have been searching for a suitable building/structure from which I could take my vantage point and this (in the image below) was as high as I could find. I wish to shoot higher but will save that for a reshoot, in the meantime I will continue to search for a building which ticks the box. Whats wrong with wanting to hang over the edge of a building to capture the image? Health & Safety :wacky:
Anyway, onto the image.

Week 2 'No Fear' a head for heights.

Yep that works as well 0- must be some high places in London you can get access to? ............. I too love heights........ Have you ever been to Barcelona? If not, go for a long weekend and visit the Sagrada Familia.. you can climb the inside of all the pointy towers and venture out onto the balconies which are about mid thigh high...... The Spanish don't do H&S it would appear......... personally, I don't have a problem with that.....

Direction is a nice one..made me smile. As has been said, great textutes and colours. I also like the direction of movement.

Fear, once I did but wasn't up to scratch. Yours has more than mine did, nice lead in, follow with red hat on. The light was a bit  but now I look, it does add to the depth.

Wonder what a 1 inch crop off the top would look like?

Cheers.

Great start Iain, your footprints image is great. Nice texture to the image and definitely fits the theme of direction. And again a great image for fear, I love how the side of the building leads the eye to the pavement and adds to sensation of height. Keep it up :)

There's plenty in there to feed the fear, Iain! I like the way there are different 'levels' - the light, the sides of the building, the bus shelter (?) and the man, very sensibly, wearing what looks like a hard hat! And the road and pavement look very hard is you fall on to them! A good interpretation of the theme.

How high are you planning to go if you do a reshoot?

Jean

I think it's great that you've got interest in this shot, not just the height. It works with and without the theme.

£5 to the Lynton fella
On reading your comment again Lynton is "pebble bag" a euphimism for something ;) How rude if it is young man!!

Hi Iain,

Great start, I'm another fan of your pebble footprints, brilliant idea beautifully shot. Checked your flickr page and I just can't choose a favourite. Hope to see a few of these meander through your 52.

Like what you've done with this weeks theme. The street light and person with the red hat make the shot for me.

Carol

Thanks Carol (y) If there are themes which would fit with some pebble shots, I will certainly use them. For me they would have to be fresh images also, taken within the given week.
Thanks also on the Fear photograph, I was a little unsure on it that it would be on theme.

Cheers Lynton, there are quite a few places in London I could possibly get access to on my ID (IYSWIM) just needed more time, work got in the way . I tried to blag my way into St Pauls with one of my workmates, again on the ID but they dont allow photography. We spoke to the Press Officer who said we could if he was to escort us around and he might not have been so keen had he known what I was planning to do . Never been to Barcelona sounds good, even better if the Spanish are a bit slack on H&S :D

Thanks Andy, much appreciated. Your comments are valid, I had similar thoughts about the light but decided to leave it in to add to the feeling of height. I take on board also about the crop, I see how that would work too.

Definitely get a sense of height on this one

Thanks Peter, thats the reaction I was hoping to get cheers (y)

Direction - like your picture, great colours
Fear - another great picture, defo cries fear of heights.
Well done

Cheers Darren, I am glad it conveys the sense of height.

Like it. The person and the light certainly add to the image. Great shot

Glad that you like it Michael, I wasn't too sure about the image and am pleased that it has been met with positive reactions.

Thanks Jean (y)
I would like to go as high as possible for the reshoot Jean to really nail the height factor. I work in London and there are possibilities for a reshoot but I am pretty sure if I do get access and were to tell them my exact intentions of dangling my feet/legs off a ledge they wouldn't be long in telling me "No Chance" :wacky::LOL:

The addition of the person in the shot makes this shot for me, bang on theme. Good stuff.

Cheers Phil thanks for looking/commenting

I think it's great that you've got interest in this shot, not just the height. It works with and without the theme.

Thanks Mark, glad you like it.

Plus one, certainly get the feeling if height

Cheers Roly (y)

Wk 2 - Another great one Ian, i know it's been said... but the red hat guy really makes this pic... Fantastic timing

Did you do many takes??

Cheers Dean (y)
No not many takes, I waited a wee while for the right person to come along. A few different configurations, ie a cyclist, a car, that sort of thing but felt another person would give a greater sense of height.

Hi Iain, good to see you here again :D... I remember 09 and 10 52's too well.. why did I agree to do another one  :D

Direction... love it... simple, great colours, works so well

Fear... an excellent interpretation, even the image gives a dizzying sensation... (now... how have you got lego bricks into it ;))

Hi John, I thought I'd give it another go in 2012 see how I get on. You must be a glutton for punishment

Thanks for your positive comments!
I had to have a good look at the fear photograph to see what you were getting at with the lego bricks reference  I hadn't noticed that until you mentioned it :D

The pebble footprints are inspired. Wonderful. I'd happily hang that on my wall.
The fear one makes me feel dizzy if I look at it long enough. I think its a clever angle to shoot that gives the impression that you aren't quite ballanced and that maybe you'll tip off and fall. Nice :)

Thanks for your comments Stephen, particularly about hanging the pebble pawprints image on your wall (y)

Your reaction to the fear photograph is one which I'd hoped for in the viewer, thanks for your interpretation too, it is much appreciated.

Week 3 and a tough theme IMHO.
I gave this theme a lot of thought around how best could I represent the theme. I finally decided to try and create a photograph of something that makes me "Sigh".
I am sure we have all seen the floral tributes along the roadside where some poor soul has lost their life and their family/friends have placed flowers in rememberance. My take on the theme is of one of these locations which I regularly drive past and each time I do, I honestly feel the same way, some sadness.
There is a speed camera along this stretch of road and I wanted to compose that within the frame but it wasn't possible. I hope I have, in what I have captured conveys a sense of a sigh in sadness.

This wasn't simply a snapshot by the roadside, what I have learned whilst taking the shot was the use of ND grads which I bought a few weeks ago to try and balance the sky against the darker foreground.
I tried to balance the shutter speed to give a sense of vehicle speed without freezing the action.
Compositionally, I would have liked the lamp-post in the background not to have been there and tried to remove it in PP but couldn't quite manage it, so it had to stay.
Overall I am happy with the result but do welcome your C&C. Iain

Fear, works really well for me definately a sense of height

Sigh i think is a great image, very powerfull yes you do sigh when you see thinks like this, and its a sigh for a family that have lost something close, i love the light trail which gives the sense of speed that probaly led to the tribute being there, and i think the national speed limit sign also adds to the depth of the picture.

Well done!

sorry I didn't see your thread before :(

I love your fear shot, conveys vertigo brilliantly, especially with the person walking by.

the sigh shot is a good interpretation, makes me sigh (a lot) when I see drivers being reckless!

very very poignant and moving...........

Pic looks to have a bit of a purple / magenta cast across it........ am sure it's not my eyes or monitor.

I do like the lorry in the background - conveys the speed and offers a clue as to what may have happened to that individual, though we'll never know...

with time , patience and the full res file, that streetlamp would go though I quite like it as it is, as offers a kind of ghostly layer to the image, i.e. the lorry becomes semi transparent...........

Thank-you Liz, your interpretation of "Sigh" is exactly what I hoped for when others viewed the photograph. This is a rememberance of an 18 year old lad, it really did make me sigh.

Thanks Lynton, you are quite correct about the cast across the image, probably as a result of the WB being shade and possibly warming the image, that plus the failing light and the sun setting. There were lovely colours in the sky. Edit added to say the ND grad may also have cast the colour!
I really must practice more with photoshop, I gave cloning a go but couldn't quite achieve.
True, very true about the lad who lost his life, we will never know :(

That's an excellent shot and a very thought provoking take in the theme. Very well composed with the movement of the lorry and the national speed limit sign. Very well done on a tough theme. (y)

Sigh....well done for choosing such an emotional way to portray this theme.

You've done really well. I wasn't sure about the LH post, but then realised why it had to be there.

Well done. (y)

I think your interpretation for sigh is the best I've seen. It really hit me seeing the tribute with the trails of a car going so fast. The colours don't work well for me though, Im not sure why :(

I was thinking the same. Not sure if this is way off or not but when I see a photo taken at sunset with the brilliant, vibrant colours it gives me a joyous feeling. The fact that the image has a hard hitting, slightly morose (not sure if that's the right word  ) feel to it, is at odds with the ambient light. If it was taken on a dull, gray day the feel of the shot may have fit better with the subject matter.

Or I may be talking total pap lmao!!! Who knows hehe

Phil thanks for your positive comments, I am pleased it came together as I'd hoped on what I felt was a tough theme.

Thanks for your kind comments Penguin.
About the colours, is it that you think it should be less saturated or about the colour cast Lynton mentioned above?
I think the colour cast was a combination of the sunset light coupled with using ND grad. Either way, thanks for looking/commenting, all much appreciated.

I don't think you are talking pap at all Phil, I can see where you are coming from on the colour. I never thought about it that way to be honest, I came home from work that afternoon, seen the clear sky and thought there'd be some nice light to take photographs. What I didn't do was consider the subject of my photo had a sombre message and perhaps it'd be best taken on a different day  Ah well, I live and learn

Great take on the theme , i like it , nice shot .

Steve

Thanks to you too Steve, much appreciated.

Hi Iain,

A poignant take on this theme, with a difficult subject which I think you've handled very well. I like the way you've composed the shot and taken it from a low angle so we can see the bus shelter on the opposite side of the road, the other elements the flowers, the speeding traffic, the sign tell a sad story very well...yes it does convey a sigh of sadness. Very well done.

Looking forward to seeing your next challenge.

Carol

Nicely taken shot, good use of light trails to suggest the speed which probably caused the incident in the first range.

Cheers ivan, I am glad you like it.

What can I say that hasn't already been said........ It's utter rubbish :D

Seriously I really like this Iain, you can tell by just glancing that it isn't just a snap shot, and the deep thought you have put into it's creation.

I too like the lamp post there it does help deliver that eerie feel. I also like the great low point of view with the light trail constantly leading your eyes onto the main focus of the cross

Have you hit the theme of Sign - Damn right you have (y)

Sigh: Another nice shot Iain. I share your feelings about these memorial / shrine sites. There're far too many of them about. (Meaning too many people losing their lives). I think the light trails hammer home the link between speed and death when taken against the cross and flowers. It looks good from the low angle.

I agree about the lamp post, and as you have edit ticked I've taken the liberty of trying a quick edit to try and eliminate it. I hope you don't mind. If you do, just shout and I'll take it down.

Excellent shot Iain... the angle and tail lights really get the message home. Liking all your 52s so far.

Helen

Thanks Helen (y)
No I'm afraid I didn't leave them but I should have done, that idea appeals to me in leaving the art work behind.

You might get famous. A performance artist friend of mine made the front page of the EDP for burying his head in the beach at Aldeburgh... :wacky:
