Locations near Aberdeen

Hi Alan,

What would be the maximum driving time you'd wish to do? And in what direction? Or is there no preference, i.e. would it be on the way home etc.

I can probably give you a pointer to some locations. I live about 45mins from Aberdeen, so have a decent idea of the area surrounding it!

HI Nick,

No preference really, I'm going to be out near the airport during the day, so was thinking to head out after end of work for evening / sunset shoot. Probably up to an hour max drive.

Even thought about making out for sunrise one day, but would need to be somewhere not too far to be back for breakfast then business!

Cheers

I have a couple of locations that sprung to mind:

Aberdeen Beach itself can be very nice, especially at sunset (if the haar (the fog) is not in!). It's pretty straightforward to find but it might be busy traffic getting there at the end of a work day, worth checking out though:

Dunottar Castle and Stonehaven are brilliant places. They are the other side of the city from you, on the South side. Stonehaven has a lovely harbour and Dunottar Castle is a really foreboding place that is great for sunsets.

Balmedie Beach is a well know beach to the North of the City which may be worth checking and there is Nigg Bay to the South of the City again - it leads into a bit of a rough area surrounding the harbour - so maybe not the nicest place to be on a late night.

Marschial College in the centre of town is a very impressive and Granite building:

If you were to go further West, you'd be in my area - but that's a bit further out than is feasible really! And there are plenty of stunning locations immediately around Aberdeen. There are loads more, but hopefully that provides some food for thought.

This photographer friend of mine and my fathers has some incredible shots in and around Aberdeen, so if you are looking for inspiration that may be a place to start.

Hope that helps somewhat!

Apologise for barging in but here are some more locations for your inspiration.

Thanks guys. Some good spots here. Hopefully get some good weather!!

Good weather ... In Aberdeen !!! contradiction in terms methinks....

A walk around Old Aberdeen and the harbour could prove interesting from a photographic point of view thought about returning to old haunts up there with the camera myself maybe one day.

Good shooting.

A walk around the harbour could be "interesting" from not only a photographic point of view, if after sunset...!

As you are going to be there for a few days, why not try a sunrise?

Have a look at the road out to Girdle Ness (on the south side of the harbour entrance) and towards Nigg Bay.

This would need an early start as sunrise at Aberdeen in a couple of weeks is about 4:20am.

Dave

As your near the airport, take the back road to Balmedie (B977 sat nav will guide you!) then head North and take the coast road to Cruden Bay (A975 if im remembering correctly) Along this route you have the dunes at Newburgh, the little fishing village of Colliston, the mouth of the Ythan river, Cruden Bay itself, the Bullers of Buchan and the Slains Castle ruins to name a few spots.

You really are spoilt for choice around Aberdeen within a 1hr drive, as long as the weather is ok! (y)

Long overdue, but here are my efforts from Aberdeen. Thanks to those who offered advice. In the end I could only manage 1.5 evenings photography. After a week of great weather and sunsets I had a week of overcast skys and solid cloud!

Here are my efforts, C&C welcome.
