Hi

I have a Canon 7D and have been using the wireless function, which I'm still learning how to use. I have been attempting to take a photo of my eye for my 52 project but getting nasty reflections from the built in flash. Which has lead me to research other ways of firing my flash. I have two 430exii but have only been using one.

Would you recommend a cable or remote release? I've been trying to research them but have been blinded a bit by numbers. So far it looks like the YongNuo RF-603. Although it looks like they do a really cheap ring flash too.

I've never bought this brand before so wondering what you all think? Or even tips to set my 7D up would be appreciated too!

Ta in advance.

Wish I could help... Just got myself a set of 3 'RF-603's off flea-market... not worked them out at all yet, but have been given a nice bit of advice I am yet to try :)

Subscribing so I find out too - ignore me though. I wont get in the way, I'll sit quietly in the corner and just listen :D

I'm not really clear what the problem is here, but if I'm reading it right, you should be able to use the 7D's pop-up to trigger the remote gun/s, without it contributing to the exposure (though it may still show if you're very close). Then use the self-timer?

Interested in this myself. Can you link to the units you purchased and how long did they take to arrive?

Richard I'm as close as possible to the camera to get a macro shot of my eye. I've researched and found that even though you can turn the built in flash off it still releases a low power flash to trigger the flash guns wirelessly. Because I'm so close I get the built in flash reflected in a not very pleasing way!

I was thinking a remote or cable release would stop the built in flash firing!

DK please don't lurk in the background, you need to share the advice you've been given and let us know how you get on with yours! I have my husbands PayPal to abuse and want to know what they're like!

If you use the 7D's pop-up to trigger the remote slave units, it will always fire the pre-flash/es that contain the mastering codes, and then it also fires a very low-powered flash during the actual exposure even when it is theoretically off. I guess that's what you're seeing as you're so close, even though it's normally unnoticeable.

Perhaps you can avoid that by shielding the pop-up so that the slaves can see it, but no light falls on the subject? There is no other way, if you want to use the pop-up to trigger the remote guns. You might get away with covering the pop-up with a few dark red cellophane wrappers from a box of Quality Street! Can be enough for the slaves to fire, but the visible light from the pop-up is reduced to virtual extinction.

It won't do much damage to your OH's Paypal account though. If you want to cause that some grief, then get some other kind of trigger. Cheap manual jobbies like Yongnuos, or much more expensive E-TTL ones. Or if you only need one remote gun, stick it on a cord - that will retain E-TTL.

Ooo, this sounds like an excuse to buy chocolate:) I have actually tried shielding it but I struggled!

Yup, that's why I started this thread! To really ask people what they recommend?
