Looking some advise,im sick of trying to save money on photography gear and paying cheap to pay twice.the latest is my filters(cokin p series)
getting dreadful colour casts etc
so im going to start from scratch and build up a new collection.....but what to get???? cokin z......hitec.....b&w.....lee and the list goes on.mainly being used for landscape.anyone any input?

Save money...shoot in mono! :)

it's the same with many things though like lenses, you buy the tamron or the sigma, but eventually you have to get the real one...Canon or Nikon!

not entirely true

My Tamron 17-50 is sharper both wide open, and at f/5.6 than the canon 17-55 2,8 IS i tried for a week

Shop around :thumbs:
 
Can you fix the colour cast in post?

Either way, Lee resin filters are better, but not good enough. They are still non-coated, scratch easily, and very prone to ghosting. Maybe coated glass square filters are the ultimate answer if there are any.
 
OOOOOH! I love defending Sigma and Tamron! :love:

I have the following Sigma lenses.... 12-24mm, 20mm f1.8, 30mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, 150mm f2.8 and I'd suggest that these lenses stand comparison with anything Canon make of similar spec and price. Actually, Canon don't make a FF 12-24mm :lol:

I also have a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and I believe that that isn't to shabby either :)

Back to OP. I have Cokin P and so far I must have been lucky as I haven't suffered colour cast, but I only have ND, graduated and a couple of specials.
 
I'd like to go for the Lee setup. That way when you buy a new lens you just need another adapter to use your creative filters. Obviously those people that use a UV/Plain filter for protection still will but I prefer using the hood.
 
I have just been in the same dilemma. I used to use Cokin many years ago when I used film, I was not impressed then.

I looked at all the various systems recently and decided to go with the Lee system, it is not cheap but I think I shall be pleased with it when I get all the items on back order.
 
After being disappointed with my set of HiTechs I ended up buying a full set of Lee grads, my only regret is that I bothered with the HiTech filters at all.

May I ask, what was it about HiTech that you didn't like?
 
I found that I was getting a strange cast with mine that I couldn't easily correct. Setting a custom white balance helped somewhat but it still wasn't "on the money". I was a bit paranoid that I was just exposing badly but I haven't had a problem my my Lee set.
 
Was this on all the filters, or just the one? I've only had colour casts from their 10 stop ND; otherwise, I found them to be very good quality.
 
You won't regret Lee filters.

From what I remember, all of them. Worse still was that everything I shot with the filters in place seemed to have a slight "haze". I know people have had superb results from HiTechs so maybe they just weren't right for me, expensive placebo if that's the case! :lol:.

Anywhere that has the filters you want in stock!

There is a bit of a shortage just now of most of the range, especially soft nd grads and the big stopper.
 
I got mine from Teamwork Photo & Digital, unfortunately the prices on their site are excluding VAT you'll actually end up paying slightly over the odds when compared to others such as Warehouse Express.

Like Teamwork, Robert Whites' prices on their website doesn't include VAT :shrug:
