Simon's 52 for 2025

I do know (from personal experience) that your subject is challenging - fast moving, often rather distant and surrounded by grey. But I think you need to get tighter for more impact. I think there is plenty of detail in your image for a crop.

Apologies for this, hope you don't mind, but you do say you allow editing of your images in your profile, so here is my effort:

Thanks Paul - that's no problem.
Good advice, and I like the result..

Well caught, Simon. As Paul said, it is not an easy shot to take with a fast-moving subject and from a distance too.
Cheers Stan. One of those rare occasions when I had my 50-230 on instead of my 16-80!

Good shot - good edit!

Good work Simon! Love the lighting the first graffiti shot, the morning light shot is lovely and the lifeboat snapper's shot looks like you get 'cold' and 'morning light' bonus points too !

Good initial shot made stronger for sure by the crop.

I like your picture as others have said it's not an easy shot to get, I quite like the uncropped picture as I think it highlights the vast area they have to work in.

Thanks Simon. The crop is an interesting point. Closer and you get more detail. Original wider angle and your point is entirely valid. The more I think about it, the more I lean towards the crop, as otherwise it could just become an orange blob in a grey background.
But having said that, I was fine when I posted it!

Week 6 - Silhouette

A significant lack of both sun and/or decent light for silhouette photography this week in south east Wales. So have a shot of some fishing rods on the pier at Penarth on a dark and gloomy day, shot into what little light there was.

Corrected that for you :)
Yes it’s not the best weather for silhouettes. I can see a couple of multiplier reels there, I was quite expert at getting “birds nests” back in the day:rolleyes:

:ROFLMAO:
I'd really, really, like some sun and warmth soon.....

Thanks Keith. I was a coarse fisherman in my youth, using fixed spools, or very occasionally going old school with a centrepin. Always thought multipliers were the Devil's work.

I like your shot, and it certainly works for the theme. But I do wonder if it might be stronger with the right hand rod cropped out?

That's not a bad shout.

I do like the shot as is and also like the way the rods grow in height from L>R. But cropping out and putting one of the upright (railing) poles bang in the centre might work.

Thanks @Boots and @Kell

Cropped as broadly suggested - first one keeping the original ratio, the second one a freeform crop.
(Full disclosure - the original had already been cropped on the right to lose a fishing box)

Yes, personally I find them both a bit stronger Simon. If I had to choose one, it would be the original ratio one, but they are both good.

I think I would have cropped the right hand rod out but more because of the white box at floor level, its a good strong shot though.

Do you know Allan, I was so focused on cropping out the big box, I didn’t even see the little white one! I’ve literally only noticed it no you’ve pointed it out.. :$

Either one of the crops works for me. I like how the detail in the railings looks like it is part of the pattern of the water.

Freeform crop for me. Nicely done in challenging circumstances.

uncropped is best in my opinion, the ascending heights reflect the vanishing point of the land mass nicely.
