Yep I agree. This ones sharper but doesn't show camouflage quite so obviously.

The little fella certainly blends in with the background. It's very hard to tell at that resolution if the first image is blurred, personally it looks fine to me and you're right, it does show the camouflage off far better than in the second shot.
The Abandoned shot looks like you've been frequenting 24DL. Certainly on subject

Shows how sharp you got the squirrel Debbie - claws and teets and all. Not many would argue about a level crossing being dangerous that's for sure. Good choice for the theme. Are you sure you need to crop - looks just fine to me. :clap: OOOO1 just seen the alternatives - like the white gate/red dot - would be terrific if you got it all in with a faster moving train in the bg.

Thankyou Carl, I actually thought that the train would blur in the background. Was surprised it didn't. Need to spend longer next time trying different shutter speeds.
 
The first dangerous shot for me Debbie.
Level crossings give me the absolute willies.
 
Danger - Like the perspective and lots of potential for a really cool slow shutter shot, with lots of movement (from the train) against the static crossing. Like you said, maybe play around with shutter speeds next time! Fits the theme perfectly though, nice job! :thumbs:
 
Thankyou Matt, I will definately try this shot again with a slower shutter speed. Am I correct in thinking that is also how you get the blurred water shots?
 
^^ Yes Debbie, that's the one! You'll probably need a tripod or something sturdy to rest the camera on, which will mean you can get lots of blur as that train passes! The blurred water (or Milky Water as it's often called) is the same technique - albeit probably with an even slower shutterspeed than needed for the train. Play around with it and see what works really - best way to learn what works in different situations! :)
 
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Just ordered a gorillapod to use to start with. Nearly ordered a Manfrotto bee but to be honest I usually rest on the camera on the car roof, so the gorillapod will probably get more use. Can't see me using a full size tripod just yet.
 
Caught at the perfect moment, just going on to the crossing, good idea for the theme
 
Abandoned - it definitely is! Looks horrid, which makes it perfect for the theme.
Camouflage - a lovely shot of the squirrel. Well done as I'm not good with nature shots so appreciate it when I see one that looks good!
Dangerous - great spot. If you'd been able to get it with a slightly slower shutter speed the train would have blurred that little bit more which would have strengthened it, IMO. As it is, it looks slightly OOF at first, until you look closer... But a great job and looking forward to more.
 
Dangerous great idea. I live within a 5 minute walk to one of these and it never crossed my mind to take an image for this theme. Yet it is perfect.

First shot for me too Debbie. I like the point of view and certainly don't think you need to crop it.. A bit more blur would be nice on the train but that will come with practice. The good thing about digital cameras is that you can experiment lots, although with the train you only get one shot at it so maybe practice with traffic until you get the hang of it.
 
good idea for the danger theme, as a signaller I understand the risk more than many

Camouflaged is a wonderful shot - tack sharp too :)

Dangerous, It portrays the theme well but I would like to see a little bit more motion blur on the train I think. Great effort though :)
 
Wow - two glorious images Debbie. A very poignant one for Topical - nicely composed and spot on theme. Lovely capture for Living World with the beautiful vibrant colour and detail in the poppy. :clap:
 
Thankyou Carl. Tried to do the topical photo as sensitively as possible. The living world photo was one from about 200 bee + poppy shots I took last summer, I kept 6 images.

Topical, such a sombre image. Powerful and certainly on theme. Living World, good colours and the bee is a winner too.

Two great shots there.
The subdued feel of 'Topical' fits your take on the theme well.
The vibrancy of the flower in 'Living World' really brings it to life and you've really done well to freeze the bee. Top Marks (y).

Hi Debbie, a very touching image for topical - what a sorry backstory. I think a touch more DOF on this so the whole teddy is sharp would make it an absolute belter, but as it is, it's still a very good image. Nicely composed/arranged and well taken.
Living world works very well - a very "real" and on-theme image. The OOF stray grass is a bit distracting for me, though - although you probably didn't have enough time to fix that before taking the image. Strong, bold colours and bee looks mostly in focus... I'm not great at macro so will say well done to your better job at it!
