Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Was out late afternoon today to try the 5D3/24-70 combo in low light and found I really missed the length of the 15-85 on my 7D2. Might have to get a 70-200 even though I have a 100-400 Mk2.

Although I've had my 5Dmkiii for 3 years now I still miss the longer reach I had with my old 60D. I've been using my canon lenses on a Sony a6000 quite a bit this year, but it's always nice to go back to the 5D, especially at this time of year when it's quite gloomy.
I got a good deal last week on a 70-300L and can't believe I waited so long to get it. It seems just perfect on my 5D and it seems more compact than my 70-200 f/4 but more useful. I though with it being slow I wouldn't use it much but I've had very good results down to about 1/20 at 300mm hand held.
It's renewed my love for my 5D again.

just a quick one ........... would you consider the 5d3 or the 5ds if you were upgrading know ... 5d4 apparently next year 5d3 is 3/4 years old now 5ds is new but what would you do???????????????

If you want better performance at higher ISO then 5D3. I'm still waiting to have a go with a 5DS but from comparisons I've seen on DP review on ISO a then it's not as good as the 5D3. If you're always going to be shooting at low ISO a and want or need the 50 meg then 5DS. Must admit I like the 1.3 & 1.6 crop function in the 5DS. hope that the 5D4 do whatever repkaces the 5D3 has it.

I have pulled the trigger on a new 5ds and am awaiting delivery next week I'm beginning to have buyers remorse though and just wanted a few opinions........ I do a lot of studio speedlite work and a mix of natural light ( prob highest iso is 1600) I do weddings but have a 1dx for that so not apart of the equation but for portraits and Speedlight's etc I'm now unsure :-(

If I did studio work then I would buy a 5DS. I've seen a few I ages from one and they are superb. And with a 1DX your low light is taken care of essentially

I bought grey with 3 year warranty and paid roughly £1800 I was going to get the mk3 but paying 400 less for a camera that's nearly 3 years older just didn't sit well with me I think its because its Christmas soon lol. I am selling a 6d in the classifieds as used them for weddings before 1dx but for weddigns I cant see the 5ds being useful with the massive file sizes so would expect most wedding togs to stick with 5d3 until 5d4 comes along

can anyone recommend where i can get a 5DIII for a good price?

I made a mistake of going grey and the camera wouldn't auto focus and I couldn't update the firmware. After a month of worry I finally got my money back. I buy most of my gear from Wex but used cameraworld because I managed to barter them down £200. I have had no problems with my 5D3 and its a dream camera, I love it. I have also the 7D2 which I bought from Jessops who also heavilly discounted it. Personnelly I would shop around and ask for discount but only buy from a good well known seller, its more expensive but less hassle and more security, its a lot of money to take chances with in my humble opinion.

I was wrestleing with the same thoughts for a month, 5d 3 or the ds. Finally gave in and got myself the 5d 3 and don't regret it one bit.

I did the same and after much research I went for 5D3. If you require 50mp as a pro-portrate or landscraper who uses extremely large enlargemen fine but the 5D3 is a much better all round camera. I believe they are tweeking the 5D in its new mode as the 5D4 and there is an intregal GPS and a few more pixels. I don't want to pay an extra £500 for all the little bits when I already love the 5D3 that I have as it is. I use the Canon GPS GP-E2 on my 5D3 which I like and my 7D2 has an intregal GPS. For me I would go for the 5D3 and it will last you years wihout the need of an upgrade.

That was my conclusion Keith... I have abseloutly no interest in GPS or Wi Fi on a camera (old hat) I'm stil reading the maunual as yet and the weather is s***e so no photo's as yet..;; Got it last Friday pm.

Time for some indoor shots then, macros, portraits or Xmas bokeh shots should give you something to practice on

I live on the North York Moors and the weather has been terrible but there is nearly always a short break every other day and the 5D3 can handle most weathers and low light. I took this photo of Rievaulx Abbey on Thursday and the light wasn't half as good as the camera achieved and a few light tweeks from lightroom 6. Amazing camera even the the hands of this poor amature photographer. image.jpeg

just ordered a 5dmkIII should be with me soon, thanks for all your help.
next stop is selling the kit lens 24-105 and buying a 24-70 2.8 II

Hi paulo
Well that lens (24-105) was on my shoping list for the MkIII and according to extensive reserch it is a fine lens for this camera. Why bother getting rid of it? I also purchased the 100-400 IS II which I can't wait to try out.

100-400 IS II is probably my most used lens on the 5DIII at the mo - a properly lush lens. Never fails to provide the results I'm looking for at both close-up and tele.
Have fun!

If i still had my old 60D then i would go for a 7DMKII. There are more lens choices available, some lenses preform better on it due to the crop factor, its cost me a fortune to change lenses, the 7DMKII also has more of the features id like (my Sony a6000 seems a lot more advanced than the 5D).
To me the 5DS is a specialist camera, and i have no need for those huge files, and the extra expense that comes with using/storing them.

IV been using the 24-105 over a few years on different bodies so just fancy a change

Id like to get another 24-105, ive had 4 over the years, but ive not had one that doesn't have lens creep when carried on a sling strap, and i find that really annoying.
Annoyed me before I gave (loaned) mine to my son in the summer - I miss it a fair bit though lovely range for video interviews and also for holiday snaps

I'm taking the plunge and swapping my 5D3 for a Fuji system. My damaged back means that I can't handle long days with this gear anymore.
I'll be moving on a 5D3, a 24-105, a 70-200 f4 and a Mk3 1.4 TC.
All have served me well and I'll be sorry to see them go.
If anyone is interested before they go to MPB stick a wanted thread in classifieds and let me know.

Yes, although i have a 24-70 f/2.8 mkii i do miss the lighter, smaller, longer 24-105.
I have tried to go mirrorless but i dont feel the lens line up comes anywhere near my Canon lenses, and although i can use them all on my Sony a6000 its not quite the same thing..

Stupid 'novice' queston..... I'm still reading the manual after 3 wks (due to health) but after looking at YoutTube some have he AF Point selection showing on the back sceen...... How the hell do I get that? Tried everything I can think of and I know I'll kick me self.

Hi Dave
Thsanks for the reply but that sequence is not working on mine (1.3.3) When pressed in that order the screen goes off. When you say 'Normal AF button' do ya mean the AF point selectio... The one ya press befor M-Fn?

Are you starting with the screen off? In my sequence I had the screen off to start with.
I suppose it also depends on how the other buttons are set. The camera is very configurable and maybe I have some thing set that you don't.
I don't really use the Info button much, but it can be very powerful for accessing settings on the screen.
Yes, for me the AF select button is the small M-Fn button on the front.

Edit: I was wrong about them AF selection. To envoke the AF points I use the button on the back of the camera, top right.

One other thing, make sure the Info button is set to display shooting functions.

If you want to see the AF points on the rear LCD screen then press the INFO button until you get what looks like the Q screen but isnt exactly the same. If the camera is in standard configuration this should be 3 times. When that screen comes up press the AF point select button on the top right of the back of the camera and the whole array pops up. you can then use the M-FN button to select which you want.

Same for the 1DX as well

Thanks for that.... Still not had time to try/play yet as Xmas shopping keeps getting in the way. Cheaper to just get rid of the Mrs lol.

Had the Mk3 for almost 3 weeks now and not taken it out in anger but yesterday I made her stop off at a local landmark (windmill) and try my new lenses out (24-105 IS & 100-400 IS II) Absolutley amazed with the quality. Never owned L glass before...Look like picture post cards with polariser on.

Has anyone used Focal software to calibrate their camera and lenses?

My 5D iii is not quite 3, with a shutter count of just under 38,000. But nearly all my images are coming out soft/ oof :(

I have tried tweaking settings and all sorts, even tried shooting in auto, still soft.

I have the 24-70, 16-35, 70-200 (all MK ii's) and the 100mm macro.
I tried yesterday taking shots of my son at really odd angles/ close to obstructions and the focus seems fine. But when I shoot at someone straight on its pants! When you've got over £4K of camera/ lens it gets quite disheartening!

I can't send it off to Canon as I'm in Cyprus and I don't trust the Cypriot workmanship! I sent it off last year with my 70-200 with back focusing issues. It came back great. But I've just noticed the micro adjust setting was to +7 for all lenses so wondered if that's what they did?

So I am thinking of trying to calibrate the camera and lenses. Anyone else done this?

New to this forum (actually the first photography forum I've joined) and new to the 5Diii (I've had a 50D since shortly after release).

Sorry to ask the following - I'm sure it's been asked before. My rural broadband makes searching such an unrewarding experience - sometimes letter writing would be quicker!!

Can anyone recommend a screen protector for the 5Diii? My 50D screen looks a little battered from general use and I would like to avoid this on my new 5D. Larmor and GGS seem popular, but glass or film?
Ebay screen protector prices are a big saving on UK prices, anyone know how genuine they are?
Thanks

I've used Expert Shield protectors on all my cameras. Easy to apply, fit well and not expensive. Come in packs for all the displays on the camera.

Wish I could help... sorry, no idea :(

Please show us some samples... I cannot believe all lenses came out soft images!

Although I need to MFA the old 500mm F4 to get pin sharp, but the rest of my lenses are all tack sharp...

Have you got the latest firmware in your camera. There was an issue on early cameras of the camera setting the MAF to either -8 or +8 for all lenses. Even after changing it back to zero the camera would put it back to 8. Might be worth having a look in the menu. Other than that I can't help sorry.

Thank you guys.

I updated the firmware about two weeks ago, never noticed that one sneak out!

I also asked the same question in the gear section. The conclusion seems to be that it's AI Servo not coping when I'm photographing a stationary subjects! It would make sense as I've tested my 24-70 (which is the one I'm having the most issues with) on a tape measure and the focus is exactly where it should be!

I'm also trying BBF again to see how I get on there! Ive tested some shots with my fidgety kids and so far all seems good, I just need a test 'out in the field' I'm hoping my kids will volunteer tomorrow!
