Elegant #1 for me. But is like it similar without the can.

Watery is an interesting take. Lighting is a little uneven on the water melon and the BG.

Nice close composition, though.

Cheers

Elegant. Good interpretation...and if 'pretentious' comes up as a theme later you can use it again! :)

Hi Simon

Watery....liking that a lot , the idea is good , the placement/crop really nice , colors fairly true to life & it looks almost see through on the end (y) Crit...not sure if it's a low res image causing the effect of bluey colored shiny colored speckles , slightly too much light on the end area & slightly uneven light on the bg....all of which are easily solved with , I suspect ,use of a reflector

Elegant....novel way to drink the black stuff but I like your thinking . Don't know much about guinness but if it was cold that could explain the marks on the glass....does it pour the same if it's warm ?

Cheers Lynne Spot on crit. I was trying to get an opaque look on the tip of the melon. it was cut very thin to the tip on the right the sun light was really bright on Sunday and I shot direct into the sun light so the background is part window part wall didn't notice that untill on computer and i had eaten the melon by then :) I think the other little spots are the camera flash I think I had it on for that shot?

Guinness best served cold so there are bubbles in the glass but I had been trying to take that for 2 days and i was getting both bored and drunk

No1 Elegant I quite like Guinness No1, but for the aforementioned (big word of the day) thing going on in the centre of the glass, bubbles maybe, quite like the idea of the hovering beer can;). I think the light seems to be a bit head on? perhaps it might be better lit from a different angle....

No2 Elegant Have to say I like No2 because I can see this is going to be a similar post from me for elegant (I don't do elegant, maybe elephant!). So did you get the drop that and your dead lecture?
Anyhow I thing the lighting on this is much more even, just a few pinprick highlights. Nice clear clean background. Quite a tight DOF, looks like the top LH side of the ribbon is running out of focus slightly or is that just the high ISO making it a little grainy there...
Nice Work. This one wins Elegant!

Watery... I was interested to read your plan for this shot, and thought about it a lot. a difficult thing to light I guess..... I was thinking, I wonder what it would look like if you also lit the thin segment at the tip from behind? Just thinking if it was lit from behind it might highlight the translucent appearance. Was thinking something like a mag light or torch mounted on some blue tac hidden behind the melon? Just my mind in Neutral:rolleyes:.
Like the colours coming out in this...
Good thinking fits the theme well!

At least your ahead of me haven't shot either Elegant or Watery yet!

Hi Simon, sorry to have taken so long to stop by - this work thing is a bit annoying, isn't it?

Scenic - that's actually a nice snowscape. I think the only thing to do is lift the exposure as the histogram is too far to the left. Maybe bring out a touch of shadow detail - I've had a very quick play in PS so hope you don't mind: http://i.imgur.com/xXaW4uh.jpg

Companions - lovely imagery but would probably prefer to see more context? I do also like the two dogs in front of the window shot!

Elegant - first shot... nice idea, but the lighting on the glass isn't doing you any favours, I'm afraid (and in my opinion... for what it's worth!) Second shot is much stronger, tells a more interesting story and the lighting, DOF choice etc. all work far far better for me. In fact, I'd go as far saying your lighting on the glass in that second shot is actually really good and the same lighting falling on the can works well to emphasise its shape well.

Watery - I do like this. I love the glare you have off the point which would normally be distracting but is actually the whole raison d'etre of the image! Nice juiciness at the bottom of the slice by the skin, too. Lighting works really well here - the only addition I'd have perhaps considered was some back lighting through the melon to lift the bit near the seeds more and create a hint of rim lighting. But still great as it is (y)

Another "sorry for the late commenting" post here too...

Fragile is my favourite of your entries overall. It's simple, yet strong and conveys the theme really well. Attention to detail is clear and it's one of those versatile images that would sit well alongside copy in a magazine or blog with that long narrow crop.

Getting back on topic though, Watery is excellent. It struck me from the main images thread with your choice of composition and that vibrant red! A nice indistinct background too that doesn't detract with detail or colour. Well done!

Hi Simon

Except for perhaps "the watery eye", your water melon has to be the best interpretation of the "watery" theme. Love the back-lighting and the hint of bokeh.

Elegant - Whilst I feel the guinness should be in the glass I do prefer #2. The lighting quality of the glass is far stronger and I feel the can being more oof than in #1 is also stronger as a result

Watery - Good subject to chose. The reflected light is a bit strong on the right hand side of the watermelon but you've definitely captured a watery feel and also some nice colours of the fruit.

Elegant - well, aren't you posh, Guinness in a crystal glass - great idea! Prefer the shot with the full glass, but not too sure about the soft reflection in the middle of the glass

Watery - yes, that melon looks mouth-wateringly juicy. Great composition - I like the way you've cropped it to show more detail.

Thanks again Paul great editing of my pic I may just start sending you my pictures before I post for you to make them look better :naughty:
Although if you only knew what the actual scene is, its not quite as idyllic as it looks the snow is a great way to make things not quite as they seem ;)

Kind words David thank you

Thanks Elaine dont think i have ever been called posh before :) The light reflection of the glass was a right pain I gave up in the end and that was the best of a bad bunch. Thanks again for your comments.

Starting to struggle 4 weeks earlier than last year :( so as not to fall too far behind here are weeks 7 & 8 I wont self crit and spoil all your fun.

All I will say is no they are NOT! my legs they belong to my very own wicked witch of the west (its ok she wont see this)

Week 07 - Bold by sr_1867, on Flickr

This decision dice sits on my computer desk so relax was staring me in the face. There was even i bit of technical photoshopping done this week which I'm rubbish at.
Thought I would also try a background that was not black I think I have used my quota of black backgrounds already this year.

Week 08 ~ Relax by sr_1867, on Flickr

Those legs and shoes certainly are bold and very bold of you to make that comment,
remember when you joined TP, we asked for next of kin? why do you think that was Eh? :D

Decision dice, that's a cracking idea, nice and simple, but effective (y)

To prove I'm not a complete hermit (although I am a little bit)
Here is the tallest Vertical I could think of that I was driving past today.
1,084-foot (330.4 m) VERTICAL concrete tower

Week 09 ~ Vertical by sr_1867, on Flickr

Hey[emoji5]️
Loving the colours in bold, you've managed to balance the silver of the shoes and still keep the other colours really strong.
relax - nice idea and lovely and sharp - nice BG too (what is it?)[emoji16]

Vertical - nice and fits the theme well.... Grass seems a little dark to me, maybe a fiddle with the contrast and shadow levels?

relax - nice idea and lovely and sharp - nice BG too (what is it?)

Thanks for your kind comments. Background is just 2 pieces of card from an old craft set.

Deffo a spot on take of a theme "Vertical", has to be or it would fall over ;)

Nice image too.

Phil

Hi

Bold - can't argue with that, great interpretation of the theme

relax - another good fit for the theme and I do like that background

vertical - good choice, nicely shot

Bold: Very bold indeed of you to post. well interpretated, the sandals add to the boldness.

Relax. Sparkly background makes me think of relaxing in a casino (not that i ever have done, but for some it is a sure way of relaxing.(y)

verical: Straight to the point

Brave man!

I really like Bold. It stands out on the pictures thread. Vertical is also quite a strong image. For me, it's a bit dark in the foreground but it's a difficult situation to expose properly with such a range from light - dark. Nice off-centre positioning of the subject. Good stuff!

Bold .... she looks a bit unsteady and that's enough black BG ... but I like it: fitting.

Relax .... good, different BG, nice reflection .... love the die clear & sharp.

Vertical .... excellent especially on sloping ground. Tall, thin & pointy.

Vertical, thats a nice straight erection there Simon :D
Nice sky too (y)

bold - love it, lots of movement in the shot always looks good :)

relax - is a bit plain (for me) but meets the theme (maybe it just looks plain cos I saw bold first lol)

vertical - is this the TV mast in Yorkshire? Used to see it from the M1 all the time and wondered what it was (but I know now) - I was convinced it had a statue on it - but yes, foreground is a tad dark but otherwise looks good :)

Bold - very bold indeed good stuff.

Relax - simple I like it and I also like your efforts with the background.

Vertical - fits the theme, crit wise I feel the foreground could be a bit lighter. I am not to sure if a closer crop would work better  or not.

Vertical; spot on theme and nice composition. Just a touch of halo appearing around the tower.
I noticed that when looking on tablet rather than pc . think I tried to make sky to blue when tweaking :(

Correct it is Emley Moor. Dont think it ever had a statue but the white section at the top is new added in the last few years for the digital switch over.

Thanks Mandy. Seems I have gone too dark trying to get a bluer sky having an effect over the foreground. When the reshoot comes round I might go for a closer shot from a different angle.

In an attempt to be different I have gone for the Mouth of a bottle.
And my favorite bottle at that :runaway:

Also trying to do what im not comfortable with stay away from the black background and an attempt at glass again which I struggled with for week 5.

Vertical - Like it. A perfect fit to the theme. My only crit is that there appears to be a slight halo around the tower.

Mouth - Good for me too :) Perfect DoF for the theme (y)

Mouth works for me too.
I have no interesting things to do this with :(

You are not wrong to much tweaking to make the sky more blue and i did not see that till i looked on the tablet

Hi Simon ....I'm catching up, were there this many people on here last year

:D I love Bold ....what a great idea for the theme, brilliantly colourful.

Simple idea for Relax but it works well ...lovely and sharp on the dice.

Spot on for Vertical ....that tower looks extremely tall.

Mouth ....good choice for a difficult theme ... focusing and DOF are excellent.

Fab socks image for bold :)
Tothers are good too and on theme. Just the bold one really jumps out at ya. The almost walking stance is what sets it off imo.

Gaz

ach you stole my idea . and did a good job of it too

stole my idea too ... after all the other ideas came to nothing.

Good focus Simon. Well done on eliminating reflections.
