This will be my first 52 challenge. I am really looking forward to the challenge, the feedback and hopefully improve my photography.

It will definitely be a challenge to find the time and to submit one photo a week but I am up for the challenge.
That's my 2015 New Year's resolution!

Hi Fabien & welcome to the madhouse

Thanks everyone.
I have got a couple of ideas for my pattern, just trying to figure out how to set up the shot, camera settings etc

Sorry, I didn’t put too much effort in this photo. I had a couple of other ideas but they didn't work out.
But I still found this practice round very useful and it made me think about a couple of things I want to do for this 52 challenge:
- I want to practice some photo techniques and getting more experience so that I am fully confident using them.
- This challenge is not a competition but which photo should I select to submit?
I am very critical with my pictures and I feel that I should submit for your feedback my best photo of the subject (or at least one that is over average). Unfortunately I feel I didn't reach that today.
For those who have already done the 52, how do you select your photo of the week (assuming that you have done more than one shot)?

Even though you may feel that it's not your best, still a pretty good start as far as I'm concerned.
An interesting observation in how patterns are all around us in every day objects and it works for the theme.

I had the same thought as Stan about cropping out some (or maybe all) of the bottom step to balance the composition. I also wonder how a 90 degree rotation would look so that the steps are vertical in the frame. It might add something to the abstract nature of it.

 Actually, while I was typing that I just had a mental image of a red rubber ball bouncing down the steps or maybe a multi-coloured slinky (with the steps in the current orientation).
If you could have managed it, I think a little quirky touch like that would really lift it and give it another point of interest.

As for picking your best shot, take a look at Ian's thread here.
Sometimes if you're undecided, it can be a useful learning experience to talk through your possible options and put your reasoning down in writing.

p.s. If you haven't seen it, there's also a 'pictures only' thread here.
If you also post your photo there with a link back to your thread, other 52ers will know that you've updated your thread for this week.

Thanks all for your feedback, it's much appreciated.

That's right Stan, carpeted stairs and I agree with you for the bottom step.

Thanks Sarah, I had some issues with the links but it's now sorted (lack of practice).

Bring on Friday for week 1!!!

I agree with the above, the bottom step needs cropping out to balance the image, some good patterns in there though.

Hi Fabien, it's my first try at this too - good luck! I like the shot, it fits the theme. I agree with Sarah's suggestion about maybe rotating the image - I'd like to see what that would look like

I, too, am very critical of my photographs and it can be very frustrating at time. This is not, as you say, a competition, and your thought process about using different techniques is a good one and will only improve your photography. For my first year I did all manner of techniques.

For a first submission it's on theme, had good detail, light looks a little uneven  but for me the inclusion of the lower step adds dimension to the photograph, IYSWIM, that is it looks 2D without it.

I also wonder how a 90 degree rotation would look so that the steps are vertical in the frame. It might add something to the abstract nature of it.

 Actually, while I was typing that I just had a mental image of a red rubber ball bouncing down the steps

I rotated, as Sarah suggested, and it really did work. I had a quick edit and also added a ball, amazing what a difference it made.

Cheers.

Hi Fabien ...I was just going to type ...'I think a rotation really works' and then noticed someone has already said that ! It makes an interest abstract shot you do that.

With regard to choosing a photo for the week, it can be difficult, and you can post a couple on your thread and let others see your choices. I would say just choose the one you like, not the one you think everyone else will like ...if that makes sense. Mainly I would say just enjoy it ...I certainly enjoyed 2014 and it stretched my imagination and ability a lot.

Hi Susie,
Thanks.

I didn't like my photo. I felt I had to submit one under the pressure before the challenge really starts.
But I found interesting that some people liked it (with some changes to be made), so maybe it's a like of confidence with what I come up with.

I will try to relax a bit more on the next one.

No one was more hesitant than me last year, but the challenge was so enjoyable, I'm sure you will settle in really well.

Even though its an every day item, it fits the theme well (y)

This challenge is about you and what and where you want to develop. I did it in 2009 all the way through and it made me try all kinds of techniques and all kinds of subjects I would never have tackled otherwise (some worked, some didn't:(). As for choosing which photo it might be helpful to choose the one YOU got the most out of, not necessarily the one you think other people will like more. If you explain why you chose that one you'll get the most out of this challenge. and, just to be different, what about shooting it at an angle instead of horizontally or vertically? :welcome:

Hi Fabien, it's a fitting image for the theme. Don't ever feel pressured by your 52 it's all about enjoying yourself and hopefully trying out / learning new things.

Thanks

I think it's a question of making time for the 52 which I will find hard.

It fits the theme well and is very well aligned, I suspect this would not have been an easy task to manage. So well done.

HI Fabien

on theme , fairly well lit & I like how the step height gets smaller as you go up the frame...IYSWIM ? As other shave already said , it's YOUR challenge....if you want to post 3 photo's for a given theme then do it...with reasoning as to why , don't feel pressured to posting your 1st idea & if your struggling with a particular theme do as Iain suggested....put the word in to a sentence to see if that helps & if all else fails just put that week on hold & come back to it at a later date :)

Nice simple effective start
Good Luck for your 2015 52 challenge.

Welcome Fabien

"a couple of other ideas but they didn't work out" ... hmmm know the feeling.

Still, the stairs are interesting and on theme.

Welcome to 2015 52s Fabien - a simple one to start, but right on theme! With 68 starters for the year, I don’t think any of us have a chance of commenting on every entry every week, but I hope to keep popping in to each thread at least once in a while. Good luck with the rest of the year.

Good start Fabien, I posted a picture that I thought was a non starter to get me going but reading from comments from people it's opened up a different perspective for me to look at it.

Yours fits the theme perfectly and look forward to seeing more from you in the following weeks.

Good luck

I exactly know what you mean, better start for me than I thought.

Hi!

You got week 0 sorted and in the bag :) Not every shot we do we will be happy with. I think it has legs though, maybe a crop of taken from a bit more of a angle (looking up/down) might have worked? Anyway, its on theme and has an extra dimesion to it due to the stairs.

On to Bliss (y)

Eating from a jar of nutella is pure bliss to me, a guilty pleasure.

I wanted to use natural light through the window but with today's weather I had no chance.

I had a go with using 2 lights but this was a very diy set up and shadows were too hard.
First time I experiment with lights so that was interesting to try.

Out of the two I prefer the second picture.

Nice idea, and probably most peoples idea of bliss, personally I can't stand the stuff.
But that doesn't stop me liking the image.
They both work IMO, and kind of tell a mini story.
It would also work as a triptych, with the 3rd being an empty jar :)

Good effort - glad to see stretching the use of the camera and lighting.

I had the same issue as you with natural light today.

Not a fan of Nutella but like the image

Hi Fabien :)

Patterns - I like that, yes there is room for improvement but that is the whole point of the challenge, we get different idea's make changes followinbg weeks, listen to others Etc Etc... that's what makes it so good - Theme wise this is spot on so a (y) from me

Bliss - Hmmmmm I'd like a combination of these shots, each has very good traites for me...

The first shot I lke the angle and the background, not so keen on the lighting and strong shadows...

The second shot I love the lighting, but the missing bit of skirting board and uneven tile placemnt keeps drawing my attention, BUT the colour and texture you have captured in the spread is lovely, a BIG well done with experimenting with the lighting, that again isd a big part of the 52, trying different things in different ways - Keep em coming like this every week and you will be amazed at how your images will improve (y)

Hi, #2 for me. I like the central composition and the lighting works well. I'd prefer a cleaner BG, possibly by using a white card. However, as Dean says, even having the rest of the skirting board would improve it.

Quick off the mark (y)

Cheers.

Is it just me or does everyone see a humming-bird shape in the shot? If it was deliberate then well-done, if not, lucky shot! :)

The bit on the spoon, it has a wing out to this side and it's long, slender beak and tongue dipping into the jar. Hmm, I can see it's just me that imagines it then.
