weekly Leebert's 2015 52 - Week 52 - Christmas.

Sound...Saw them do this on QI once. Quite fascinating and I'd love to have a go. Well done!

Experiment. Love the first one. Very neatly done :)

#1 is brilliant and made me chuckle when I saw it.

#2 is something I've not heard of before. It's an interesting technique, but I think the foreground is quite dark even on the left hand side of the shot. This makes it hard for me to see the graduation of light->dark.

So #1 is the winner for me. Lovely effective technique that has been executed well.

Love the experiment of Mrs Leebert holding the picture frame, great idea

Hi Lee

sure looks like you've got grips with layers & p'shoppery in general  experiment 1 for me & not crit at all :clap:but I have had more thoughts about this......

Morning, Experiment, technically well done with this one. You've mentioned the BG. I've seen a similar photograph where they didn't do any masking, just photographed the person, self portrait if I recall rightly, with a reflection.

Timeslice, decent attempt and I can see what you were after but I'd like to see something like an hours worth of photographs or more, ideally getting some stars in there.

Cheers.

I've come back to Experiment cos there;s something not siting quite right ....I must have looked at that shoot about 100 times now trying to work out if its me being a numpty....which it probably is !

It's the frame......... it's not looking like mrs leebert is see through, wonder if masking out the frame & her hands would work ? it probably is just me !

something not quite right about Mrs L ... but I love it as it is.

Alphabet - Looks like you’ve got to grips with Elements with this. Straightening it I feel has probably helped as has the T&S effect and well done keeping the greyness of the page for the mono conversion

Sound - That looks a rather messy experiment (amusing given the following week’s theme). I do find the colour rather off-putting though

Experiment - I quite like #1. I feel the positioning of your wife and the frame is spot on given the background you’ve masked to show through. Nice one.
Thank you. If only I'd known about Experiment - I could have added a 'how I did it' photo :)

Two lovely Experiment shots you have taken there, Lee.

Layer Mask; I thought the shot is just your wife holding a mirror until I read your description. Nice composition and focus.

Timeslice; when I saw the shot in the photo thread I knew it's a time slice technique. This is another technique in my to-do list.
Thank you. I want to take another timeslice photo as this one is a bit dark. It's tricky finding somewhere where things won't move for a couple of hours or more though.

Thank you. Yes, the timeslice is one that I want to improve on.

Thanks for the video - missed the quoted alert. Yes. You made a mess.
You're welcome. It was tricky to remove as it stains a hell of a lot!

"Experiment", number 1 for me Lee. Nice take on the theme.

Phil

Odd. I didn't know what you meant initially but I think I do now. Maybe a more ornate and thicker frame would help? Maybe something I could try for the next re-shoot?

something not quite right about Mrs L ... but I love it as it is.
Thank you for taking the time to comment (y)

Week 17 - Heat.

I don't think I'll have much in the way time to get a photo this week so I am going for an archive shot for the moment. It's an image of our Sun taken in part of the infra red portion of the spectrum (Hydrogen Alpha - Ha). It was taken with a mono astrophotography camera and then false coloured. The 'lens' was actually a Hydrogen Alpha telescope with a 400mm focal length with a fixed aperture of f10.

The image is a stack of individual frames (think more along the lines of video frame rather than a burst of photos). These frames are stacked (much in the same way as focus stacking) to improve the quality of the image. Each frame os only a small part of the Sun. This image is made up of ten frames stitched together to make the whole image.

Hi Lee ...some super shots here....great idea for Sound ...I can imagine the mess but great fun to do I'm sure.

Love the one of Mrs L in the garden ...I really like that idea, I must try that out sometime....really nicely done.

As for the sun ...well that's just a wow shot ...amazing !

Have to agree Lee, the sun shot for heat is a wow shot.

Hi Lee,

I love the first experiment shot, I've read about this but never tried it, it's very well done.

I'm not getting much graduation in the second shot, but it's a clever thing to do.

Heat - amazing :clap::clap:

crikey - the sun! really good shot and sounds like a lot of work - well done mister

Well thats certainly has some heat to it, would have no idea how to do that, very impressive

Thanks. You're quite right - the timeslice is definitely one to re-visit.

Thank you. It's not as bad as it sounds but it did take me a fair few goes before I got anything half decent.

... never saw a sun like that before.
Thank you - it is an amazing sight. I just thought it was a bright white ball before I took a look through a specialist Solarscope. There is so much detail and it changes all the time.

Well thats certainly has some heat to it, would have no idea how to do that, very impressive
Thank you :)

Amazing Heat shot and far too technical for me :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:
Thank you for your comment.

It goes without saying but I'll mention it here anyway... Please do not look at the Sun with the naked eye or through anything except something that is expressly made for that purpose (solar glasses or a Solar scope etc.).

Who is ever going to be able to beat the heat of the sun...?! Wicked shot, love it!

Experiment: I didn't realise that was a composite until I read the comments, I thought it was a reflection and was impressed at how it had come out and how you managed to avoid being in the photo. I get it now, good shout at trying a new technique, I think you've pulled it off very well.
I didn't understand the second shot either until I read that it was time slicing. Show's how well you've composited the shot then eh?
Top Marks.

A very unusual shot of the sun and it sounds like an awful lot of work involved so well done on that, but I'm afraid that before I read the explanation I actually thought it was a cantaloupe melon, so I can't really say that it works for me for the theme. :sorry:

Thank you. It's two types of shot I hope to revisit and improve upon at some point.

Very true - unless you know what it is, it doesn't fit. I hadn't considered that. Thank you for your comments - I will hopefully incorporate that line of thinking in future (y)

Catching up on some threads here:

Sound: love the concept and have seen a few do something similar. Paint springs to mind and loud music. The custard looks absolutely yuk I think I would have liked to see it in B & W. Shapes were quite interesting, the one on the side of the speaker almost looks like a thumbs up so (y) for thinking laterally.
Experiment: two super shots and well done fro trying new things.
Heat: Interesting shot and thank you for the narrative. You certainly have a lot of patience. I love this shot and find myself going back to it several times. The square crop also suits it as well.
Figures: Bang on theme. Again crop works well.

Hi Lee,

Figures - yes, it was a difficult theme, but the shot works and I like the time on the clock :)

Perfectly on theme and smashing clarity on all the figures. (y) Did you shoot it in one, or did you have to keep changing the time on the clock?

Thanks. I may have changed the time on a few occasions...;)

Yep, nice & sharp on the Figures. (y)
Thanks.

Figures, yeah, ice and sharp with bright reds, I'd have been tempted to get in closer.

Cheers.
Thanks - I'll have a crop and see how it looks.

Nice take on the theme "Figures" Lee.

Phil
Thank you.

Like it (although I seriously doubt that speed unless it's in kilometres per hour :) )

figures - nice simple clean lines, meets the theme, well done
household, hmm, I'm not sure about this one sorry, I think I'd like to see the handle too, and the processing doesn't fit the subject really, not without more in the shot to tell a story
limit - love it! I suppose you need more emphasis on the speedo to meet the theme, but otherwise tis a great shot :) I love the feeling that you're in a tunnel due to the lights speeding past

Nice clear shot for Figures Lee, I might have been tempted to crop a little more but great focus on the numbers. I like the number choice and also the bright red colour.

Like summer I'm not too sure on Household ....they just lack that certain ooomph needed to make them eye catching.

Super choice for Limit, there's a real feeling of speed from the lights as they disappear into the distance.

Household: When I first glanced at the shot I thought it was one of those rocks that you can get. Then i looked properly my oh my there is some detail in the blade and the B&W suits the image well

Limit: As Summer says would be better if speedo was emphasised more. Still a good shot.

Household; you've captured the knife's texture nicely. The knife looks very sharp and expensive too.

Limit; I took a look of your shot in Flickr, although its 140mph in the speedo however to me the light trails aren't smooth and blur enough to indicate that the car was travelling at that speed plus a closer look at the speedo needle it's a bit wonky and looks like its been photoshopped. All that said, nice shot and spot on theme.

Househould, I agree, nice woody texture there. Not overly keen on the close crop, though.

Limit, quick off the mark here. Works well, maybe a little more light inside the car on the dashboard, but nice colours outside.

Cheers.

Household ... another one who's not sure.

Limit ... love it. Great shot for the theme. Long exposing on the outside lights: beautifully done. And inside: all pretty sharp inc. the speedo.
