No, mono doesn't work for me. In the colour shot my eye is drawn to the upright pieces of wood above the water, in the mono shot my eye is drawn to the OOF pebbles in the middle of the frame; not so good.

Thanks Andy. Here's my mono one

Llandulas Mono
by Delta Skies, on Flickr

I can't believe you were in Prestatyn - we could have met up for a few piccies or even share the bottle of JD that I had in the caravan. We were staying at the Nant Mill Caravan Park which is on the corner as you come into the town from the East. We were staying from Thursday to Wednesday for the kite festival which we do to support the fun fair. The theory is people will see the kites from a distance and come to see and then spend lots of money on the rides when they find us. Unfortunately the wind was light to non existent so we really struggled to put on a good show for the public.
Small world. There were about a dozen largish kits on the beach at Crosby. I rather like the B&w.

Cheers.

Hi Peter,

that's a stunning shot  and I much prefer the colour version to mono. I agree with Chris about the wind turbines though (even though I did use one for my machine shot). They are very small, but I think I'd have cloned them out :)

The mono shot is stunning but the color shot leaves it a long way back in second place! Outstanding work.
Thanks Bob

Thanks Lorraine. Looks like I'm going to have to have a go at cloning those out

Week 13 - Machine

Cogs
by Delta Skies, on Flickr

This one was taken hand held at the National Coal Mining Museum which I popped down to yesterday to find some machinery. They've had a clean up of all the rusty stuff but I did find this one. Other shots can be found on Flickr

Great textures and detail in there. Seems to be a few OOF bits on the lower half of the central cog.

The square crop works really well agains the circular cogs and I like the central placement of the middle cog.

It's been a while since I went there and It's a real shame for us photographers that they have had a clean up :)

Cheers.

Re-shoot, much better, Peter, no turbines ;)

Machine, As Andy Said, great textures and detail, and actually I don't mind the slightly OoF lower part of the center cog,
it leads the the OoF rear section.

Hi Peter - I agree with Cobra, the edited photo is much bettter - it has a more tranquil feel to it now.

Machine - I like that one a lot, especially the gritty feel to it :)

Thanks Andy. They're usually pretty good up there and I wouldn't be surprised if they let you have a smooch about if you asked nicely.

Week 14 - Alphabet

Typewriter Keys
by Delta Skies, on Flickr

Back to the typewriter for this shot. This was lit by natural light coming in through the window. I've just purchased a couple of new lenses and was keen to try them out. This is using the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens. Whilst I did take a shot wide open I felt f2.8 had just a smidgen better focus for this composition.

Hi,
Watery, definitely the colour shot who would have thought anything near Prestatyn could look so pleasant
Machine, is really good great detail and works so well in B+W
Alphabet, shallow DoF works well for this
Sound, great idea though I would say that

Very nice catch up (y)

Watery...another vote for colour from me. A lovely image.

Machine and Alphabet are both wonderful.

Sound. Very nice indeed. I love negative space :)

Machine: very nice. Works well as a mono and nice detail. The focus is falling off on some of the teeth though, but I'm being picky.

Alphabet: I like this. Great use of dof and again works well in colour. Not sure about the frame though.

Sound: Nice simple shot. Light is spot on IMHO.

Peter I really love seeing your pics there is hardly ever anything to crit the standard you achieve is brilliant.
Watery reshoot there was nothing wrong with the first pic for me.
Machine gears as said gritty is a great word to describe that.
Alphabet nice dof which works really well
Sound is going to take some beating for my shot of the weeks theme.

Watery ... is lovely ... liking the OTT blue version.

Machine ... perfect prop ... nice B&W texture ... only noticed a little bit of OOF when pointed out.

Alphabet ... was wishing I had a typewriter like yours for this theme. Interesting focus, probably makes it look more dilapidated than it really is.

Sound ... very nice.

That's a lovely one, nice grain - and just how I see the theme, cogs and gears. Nice and gritty, love it.

Karl
Alphabet - I like that, is it a Royal? I think that I have a slightly newer 1920s version somewhere. Perfect in b&W.

Karl
Thanks Karl. I'm not at home at the moment but I don't think it said Royal.

Machine; very fitting and the B&W treatment just enhance the old machinery feel too.

Alphabet; nice shallow dof and could pass as machine too. Two themes in one.

Sound; very simple, very apt for the theme and very nicely taken.
Thanks Stan

Liking your latest submissions.

All on theme and well taken!
Thanks Bob

Hi Peter

Watery Reshoot........must confess to not being struck by this shot but can't quite nail why  sharp everywhere, lovely focus & super use of the 10 stop, the clarity of the water is superb & ( on the laptop at least) I can't make out the turbines in the distance. I'm starting to think it's the brightness of the white foreground rocks.....they pull my eye everytime I look at the shot & I struggle then to take in the rest of the scene, partic the wood which has some lovely tones ...sorry :(

Machine.....now that I like , perfectly framed ,super detail & the usual excellent mono conversion

Alphabet......bet the youth of today would be scratching their heads over that one:D another big (y) from me....super DOF & conversion

Sound......seems a cheat to just keep saying....another big (y) from me , but not sure what else i can say , the goldy tones for this & use of negative space work beautifully & , as ever , it's pin sharp

Many thanks for the catch up. I was happy with the watery reshoot until I saw a quick youtube video about neutralising colour. See below for the result which has made me realise I was maybe too thinking there was something about the original that I also couldn't quite put my finger on.

This has brought back the posts as a focal point for me so it's better but sorry, it's still the mono for me. :)

Machine - lots of gritty detail in there Peter and I like the DOF (y)

Alphabet - DOF suits it and the processing gives it that Olde Worlde feel (y)

Sound - Sound goes into a microphone so I suppose it fits :D but it comes out of something else........ Love the composition though

Cheers Martin. I problem about you preferring the mono. I'm going through a mono patch at the moment so it was my immediate thought for the location anyway

Hi Peter ...I think your original colour re-shoot is stunning I love it.
Typewriter is fabulous too, I was really wishing I'd kept my little Olivetti when the theme came up.
Super composition for Sound, a crisp and clear shot.
Thanks Susie.

Week 16 - Experiment

The Experiment
by Delta Skies, on Flickr
Well I looked in loads of shops for test tubes with no luck and then thought as I work at a university then I need to find a friendly chemistry lab technician. This was taken at home rather than in the lab with the aid of some food colourings and Sarah's Plamp to hold the angled test tube. Camera sat on a tripod while being lit by a LED panel.

Really impressed Peter with how you've managed to get the light to show the different colours so clearly without any unwanted shadows or reflections

Great shot. Could easily make a magazine cover or something. Crisp white "lab conditions" background and lovely rendered colours. Love the choice of depth of field too.

I also found out what a plamp was. Although it sounds like the person responsible for naming it was behind the phablet.

Hi there

Watery: That looks a stunning place. I prefer the colour shot personally but you're right - there is something I can't quite put my finger on. I am getting the feeling I want to crop a bit off the bottom and a bit off the right hand side.

Machine: Really like this. The rust in mono for the texture. The square crop and round gears. Smashing (y)

Alphabet: Very nice take on the theme. I like the shallow DoF.

Sound: The light looks nice and the shot works well with the negative space :)

Experiment: Great shot. The bold colours work well with the white BG. The only thing that I am drawn to is the gap in the lower right. It feels like it needs an extra test tube there. Strange thing is, I don't notice the gap on the left...
